Skills test for joiner/carpenter

Hi all.

We are newish to poms in oz so apologies if I have put this in the wrong area.

My partner has been shopfitting for the last 20yrs. I understand there is no shortage of shop fitters, therefore we would need to sit the joinery/carpentry skills test. He has city and guilds in carpentry and joinery but has not done this style of work for over 20years.

I have researched the australian bureau for job specifics which are outlined below.

331211 CARPENTER AND JOINER

Constructs and installs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard, and cuts, shapes and fits timber parts to form structures and fittings. Registration or licensing may be required.

Skill Level: 3

Specialisation:

Shopfitter

I believe part of the skills test for carpenter and joiner is based around roofing. My partner has no experience in roofing since he left college. Has anybody sat the skills test? An idea of what to expect would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks to anybody who replies

Hi lavut

I'm also wondering about this aswell. I'm a carpenter by trade and doing technical interview in couple of weeks. Would love to speak to some other carpenter's on here to find out what it was like as I'm nervous and don't want to fail it

Hi darraghbyme11

we are yet to sit the tests. Due to the age of my partner, we feel that time is not on our side. He will be sitting the ielts test first, then the skills test. He has to get the maximum score of 8 on the ielts in order for us to obtain the necessary points towards the 60 that is needed.

Let me know how you get on with the technical interview. I'm sure you'll be fine and pass with flying colours.

By the way, have you had any roofing experience?

Hi Alan. My partner had a chat with someone at the down under centre last week, very informative. I think my partner will have to brush up on some skills as the roofing part of things are worrying him.

I have yet to sit my ielts also.

Im going for my skills assessement first as that is the most worrying for me.

I have experience at roofing but I wouldn't be very confident at it. It's mostly the hip roofing that is confusing me the most.

Theres a handy little book called goss's roofing ready reckoner. It explains how to find rafter lengths and so on. Could maybe be a help to your partner there's also loads of videos on YouTube to give you an idea about roofing. Good luck with the ielts be no problem I'm sure and let me know how yous get on[emoji1]
