Career advice (painting and decorating)

Hi guys

i am currently living in Australia on a working holiday visa but will soon be applying for my partner visa. At the moment I don't really have any decent work qualifications other than my QLD HR licence so unfortunatly I'm stuck doing removals (not nice when not used to the hot weather).

Once I am able to, I was thinking of doing an apprenticeship in painting and decorating or something along side that sort of work. It just seems a long time (4 year apprenticeship) to be on apprentice wage and being 24 I'm not sure how it would work out. I know it's roughly 4 years for any apprenticeship like electrician for example, it seems long for just a painting and decorating although saying that I've never actually done it so don't know fully what it requires.

has anyone on here previously completed a painting and decorating apprenticeship or is currently doing one now? If so could you shed some light on the whole process and wages etc as when I look online, I find all sorts of different numbers.

also if there are any current painter and decorators who read this. Is it worth getting into? I've been told it's a good idea by some, and others to not waste my time so it's hard to come up with a decision without getting first hand information.

any information would be appreciated as I am stuck in a hole here on deciding.

cheers

If you do an apprenticeship thru a reputable builder it can pay quite good considering you don't know what your doing for the first 6 - 12months, ( in region of $700 a week I have heard with hols etc ) at the same time if I was committing to a 4 yr apprenticeship at the moment it would be as an electrician / electronics etc. loads of painters in Aus, get something a bit more specialised for your 4 years.

Oh that doesn't sound to bad. I have looked into electrician apprenticeships but it doesn't really interest me to much, I would only be doing it for the extra money which could be a mistake in the long run, especially after all the training.

The example I have given you is from my part of Aus ( Perth) thru a reputable builder ( dale Alcock ) I presume you in qld from your post so not sure what available there but would assume the same type of government funded apprenticeships are available?? But I would definitely do something other than painting - plumbing even tiling in my opinion of my years in the building industry painting a bit on the decline, who knows what the $$$ will be in the next few years compared to other trades...........but it's your decision good luck.
