Greetings from London. !

I am extremely grateful to find a leading forum online which hopefully can help me out with a few issues i have got.!

I'm Maltese living in london and have been granted a WHV for a year. I arrive in Melbourne on the 10th of March 2015 into a hostel for a week. I have finalized my airline ticket and hopefully a job (fingers crossed) ,however need some help with opening a bank account and obtaining my tax file number.

Am i able to do this stuff when i arrive or is it better if i sort them out from here. It will be my first time in oz and my first time on a whv. Naturally i'm quite lost on what to do. I'd appreciate any support or help from you guys and look forward to hearing your suggestions in due course.

Thanks !

Rico

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Opening a bank account is dead easy and if you do it within 6 weeks of arriving in Australia, the only ID you need will be your passport. Make sure you ask about fees and charges as there can be big variations between banks and even between accounts within a bank.

Apply for your TFN online. It will take a couple of weeks to arrive but you can work before you have one. When you complete a TFN Declaration form for your employer, just X the box to say that you've applied for one and you then have 28 days in which to provide it.

https://www.ato.gov.au/Forms/Permanent-migrants-or-temporary-visitors---online-TFN-application/ TFN for new arrivals.

And PIO has a Backpacker/WHV section where you'll get info and maybe even come across a job.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Most people on a WHV choose to use NAB because you can set up your account now online http://migrant.nabgroup.com your cards will be waiting for you when you arrive in Australia unlike Westpac and ANZ where you have to wait 5 working days and they are posted out to your address. Also NAB don't charge fees for having a bank account. The other big 4 banks do.

Also you can use moneycorp to change your money and get a better rate which is fee free if you tell them your a PiO member. http://moneytransfer.pomsinoz.com
