Emmadotzip
We are looking to ship back our medium sized dogs to the UK but are getting conflicting advice about rabies vaccinations and how long you have to wait. Do we have to wait 6 months or travel within 3 weeks? I noticed a thread that was started over 4 years ago and wondered if anyone can share their recent experience of shipping pets, please? Also if anyone can recommend a pet travelling company too, that would be great. Thank you
Miley123
Hi there, this is the information I was given from the Vet travel specialist we will be using for our dog when I asked him the same question: "The Rabies vaccination needs to be given at least 21 days in advance of travel. The 6 months figure comes from the previous import requirements where a Rabies vaccination and blood test was required at least 180 days before travel. The vaccination remains valid for 3 years so there is not too much risk of giving it 'too soon'." Hope this helps, if you are in WA I can give you the details of the Vet/Travel specialist we are using, it's not a company but a Vet that deals with it all as a onestop system, we liked the more personal touch of knowing exactly who would be dealing with our much loved family member and responsible for all the paperwork, blood tests, crates etc. Not to say using a national company is a bad thing, we just preferred this option. Chutneymary
Hi We are returning very soon. My two dogs x 2 staffys had their rabies vacs about a month ago but as long as 21 days before you fly, then its all good. We are using Jetpets they are very good and on hand to answer any questions we have had.
Emmadotzip
Thanks for your replies. We are in Adelaide and looking for direct flights for the dogs back to LHR (one of them is very old). Jetpets will only transport via SYD or MLB. Does anybody have any experience of flying pets straight from ADL to LHR?

srh82
There is no such thing as a truly direct flight. Via Dubai for Adelaide would be one stop on Emirates? I'm not sure which other airlines fly one stop to the UK from Adelaide - Malaysia (I am not comfortable with them personally), and Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong perhaps? Anyway, I've heard that Emirates Sky Cargo are excellent and treat the pets very well in transit in Dubai, it might be worth enquiring with them to see which pet carriers in Australia they typically deal with. Might be useful if you wish to fly into a non-London airport as well.
beanbear
We are going to use an Adelaide company called Animal Travel. My friend has just used them for her cat and was very happy. The rabies vet also recommended them. They are competitively priced and fly via Malaysia with the most direct route of the companies we investigated. They can arrange the rabies jab, or you can get it yourself at a number of vets; we used one in Aldgate.
