Hi Everyone

We have been grnated PR with subclass 175 and are coming to AUS in a couple of months. We have been looking for some information about what happens when we get there but have had little luck finding any answers. Your help/info would be much appreciated.

  1. Do we need to take any documents with us for landing?
  2. what happens next? what do we need to do on arrival? e.g. do we need to register with any authorities?
  3. Do we get a PR card or something similar? if yes what do we need to do and how long does it take to get it?
  4. Is it better to open a bank account before we arrive?
  5. Any additional information to assist us would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, I thought the subclass 175 visa was closed to new applications. Good news if its open again.

It is closed to new applications but applications already in the system continue to be processed.

The visa is electronic, so scary though it feels when you enter Australia immigration know you are permanent residents. You do not have to register your arrival immigration know from your passport that you are in the country.

You should register with Medicare and the Australian Tax Office though. There are lots of Medicare offices, just find your local one and drop in. You can apply for your tax reference number online (equivalent to your NI number in the UK). If you have a driving licence I would also get that exchanged for an Australian one as soon as you have a permanent address (semi-permanent at least) as they are used a lot for ID and it saves you carrying your passport.

If you are transferring funds from the UK I would open a bank account before you go and have the funds transferred to be ready and waiting for you. It can help in securing a rental to show the funds in your account.

Hi, we applied 7 years ago and it was only a couple of months ago that we got it so not a new application a VERY OLD ONE!

That must give hope to others, were you Category 5? We applied in 2008 when all that came about but luckily for us my OH was on both the MODL and Critical Skills List so it resulted us getting our visa faster than we expected. Ironically after 5 years in Australia we decided to move back to the UK so it is kind of strange seeing others who applied when we did just getting their visas. I wonder if we had been Cat. 5 whether we would have still wanted to go now? I doubt it because our son is now 11 and a very different time for us to move. Not saying other people with 11 year olds shouldn't move, I just don't think I would have wanted to! Life could have turned out very different that's for sure!
