Any help??

Hi

I'm in my final year studying Engineering and I'm moving to Oz in July on a 'Work and Holiday' Visa to live with my Australian boyfriend with the hope of then staying on and getting residency. What are the chances of a company willing to take on a new engineering graduate or me finding mechanical/maufacturing engineering work? I'm hoping to maybe have a job lined up for when I go out and if not I'll just have to job hunt out there. Just wondering if anyone might be able to offer me any advice.

Thanks

Vikki

Hi Vikki - and welcome!

Where abouts in Oz are you looking to stay!?

I live and work in Perth and there is a serious shortage of engineers of all levels here I'm sure there is loads of opportunity if you look in the right places Infact stacks of it!- If on your travels and with a 1 year visa you maybe limited to three months work at a time - if so you might be able to get company sponsorship if they like you and apply once you are here after doing a trial period. :D

What sort of positions are you looking at? I'm an engineer (not too different than mechanical) here in WA and had no trouble getting a job almost as soon as I wanted one - six months ater sampling the delights of this wonderful country- which is a must!. :D:D:D

Try seek.com.au in the meantime as they are good for job hunting purposes.

The company I work will be looking for a graduate engineer in the next six months or so, great bunch of folk...PM if you'd like more info....

good luck in the meantime as I reckon you'd have no problem getting work anywhee here in OZ! :P 8)

Hi Tim,

Thanks for that info. I'm looking to initially stay in melbourne as that's where my boyfriend is from but I'm sure if I would stay in melbourne the whole time. If I was to get a job elsewhere I would probably give it a go.

I heard perth is a lovely place, my boyfriend even mentioned trying it out if I could only get a job there.

I'd be looking to do any work really. I will just be a graduate so I won't be specialised in any specific area so would be looking for a company who could train me etc.I'm hoping if I do get a job that I will then apply to get residency and that will be me set.
