Confusion regarding qualification points towards migration

Dear All,

While going through Australian immigration web site, some information regarding qualification points is provided as:

Points Description of education qualifications

20 Doctorate Degree

15 At least a Bachelor Degree

10 Australian Diploma or trade qualification.

10 Award or qualification recognised by the assessing authority in the assessment of the skilled occupation

To claim points for a qualification obtained overseas, the qualification will need to be recognized as being of a standard comparable to the relevant Australian level qualification.

Generally, applicants will be able to request an opinion on their qualification claims from the relevant assessing authority when seeking their skills assessment.

An applicant may also be able to claim points for a qualification not related to their nominated occupation, for example they may hold a trade qualification related to their nominated occupation and an unrelated Bachelor degree. If the assessing authority conducting their skills assessment cannot provide an opinion on the non related qualification, applicants should contact the Vocational Education Training and Assessment Services (VETASSESS).

In one of the cases i know, the applicant has an overseas qualification assessed by Australian Computer Society as suitable for migration, and occupation is listed on SOL and the

overseas degree assessed by ACS as comparable to associate degree with major in computing and the applicant also has a Diploma of IT from Australia.

Please comment as how many points the applicant can claim for qualifications.

1) 10 POINTS "Award or qualification recognised by the assessing authority in the assessment of the skilled occupation"

2) 20 POINTS (i.e. ten points for "diploma of IT" and ten points for "qualification assessed by the assessing authority")

Thanks,

Sana

10 points only. You can only ever count one qualification and of course, the one you would count would be for the qualification that earns the highest points. The only way to get 20 points for qualifications is by having a Doctorate degree.

What "An applicant may also be able to claim points for a qualification not related to their nominated occupation" means is that if an applicant has nominated a trade occupation (10 points) but also has a degree, they can claim 15 points for the degree even though it is in a completely unrelated occupation - they can't also claim 10 points for the trade qualification.
