thanks @sydneybrit and @Hex for both your inputs...

i'll go see if my employer can help me out with a 186DE then instead of waiting for my 3rd year for the 186TRT... indeed it would be better for my family to be able to get that PR ASAP especially right now, the government just changes their rules so fast.

I think most reasonable employers understand. If your employer offers support for TRT, maybe you could offer to personally pay the difference for DE (e.g. for skills assessment) so they are not disadvantaged. Then it works well for both of you.

  2. Does anyone have any idea on how long a 186 DE visa grant takes once medicals have cleared (when that's the last thing left, only s56 I had)?

Appreciate it can vary massively but it seems some people get a grant within 7-14 days, which seems too good to be true when some people wait months!

Hi all! Hope everyone is in good condition while ready this enquiry of mine.

Just would like to find out what my options are and which would be best as Visa for me and my family.

Currently on 482 which will expire next year, thinking of doing the 186DE but not sure if I should just wait on my 3 years to ask my employer for a sponsor 186TR?

But not sure how to do this on my own, can you please show me the right way to start? 🙂

    TIA! All the best!

You are much better to do 186 DE rather than 186 TRT for the following -

    • You can do DE now rather than waiting to be eligible for TRT
    • Doing it now/earlier protects you from the Government changing the rules/visas etc. (e.g. if your job becomes ineligible for PR)
    • Processing time for DE is typically much faster (currently 5-11m for DE, 13-17m for TRT)
    • DE requires a skills assessment, though this is not much extra cost given the benefits in my opinion
    • Getting PR earlier avoids employment risk if your current employer goes bust etc.

I think most would agree you should seek to get PR as soon as you can, wherever possible. You should look at the below links, the pages for TRT and DR are useful and outline what you need in detail. It is good to get collecting the information sooner rather than later (i.e. collecting references/doing English tests) so you are ready to apply when the time arrives.

    Hope that helps 🙂

Hoping for the golden email soon !

Do you work for a large employer with high turnover? Interesting to see if this may impact processing speed

Hi, apologies I'm not sure what DE or TRT stands for? The Visa just says 186.

My medical cleared on Friday last week, 23/04/21 so it only took one day after that for my Visa which was granted on 24/04/21. I thought this was really quick as my agent said it could take 1-3 months.

I am  based in VIC and am a quantity surveyor. I was on a 457 which was sponsored by my employer and they sponsored the PR.

Thanks for the information - very useful. 186 has two "types", either "Direct Entry" steam or "Temporary Residence Transition" stream - the first one is usually quicker so it's useful to know. It would be stated on your visa grant or application.

Hi, I've just had my 186 Visa granted, if of any use my timeline is as follows:

The application was lodged on 23/02/21 I sent across my police clearance on 04/03/21, had my medical 15/04/21 and my Visa was granted 24/04/21.

Thanks for the info, what job role/code did you have, and which state are you in? Also, 186 DE or TRT? Any idea also when your medical cleared in the system? Thank you! 🙂

Hey! Were you 186 DE or 186 TRT, and which state? Also assume you work for an employer with high turnover?

  9. Hi Everyone!

First post on here but it's been great reading about everyone's experiences.

I'm on a 482 visa in Sydney and my employer is now putting me through the 186 DE stream to obtain my PR. The application is expected to be lodged in the next 1-2 weeks, given I have all documents. However, I am wondering:

    • Can 186 DE visa approvals come back relatively quickly? 4-8 months wait time as seen online seems bit a long to approve me when I should be a simple low risk case: single applicant, work for a multinational (who struggled to recruit locally), no children or spouse and generally quite a boring visa application (i.e. no criminal records, only ever lived here and the UK etc).
    • Whether it it worth flying interstate to get a medical done (Sydney wait times can be very long right now with Bupa)? If DOHA have reviewed my visa and the only item is the clean medical, would an approval come back quickly post Bupa?
    • Occupation: External Auditor (and also now professionally qualified in Australia, in addition to the UK)
    • Citizenship: United Kingdom

Appreciate the above are elusive but would welcome comments if anyone has recently had a 186 approval as either an "External Auditor" or "Accountant (General)", given that these are generally quite similar.

    Thank you!
