How soon do I need to notify them, as i will need to get him a NZ passport

Hi, I am a UK citizen and my husband is a kiwi, i am on a 461 visa and my husband on NZ passport. I am pregnant with child number 1 and i want to know please if apply for a NZ passport with citizenship by descent that is good enough for him or do i still need to tell Immigration re the birth HELP!! :)
