You will have to justify to department you solely want to visit temporarily and will not overstay. You can do so by providing supporting evidence if you're working in your home country. By overstaying visit visa you will not want to jeopardize your 309 application - DIBP should understand that. You call apply for 3,6 or 12 months. The best is to apply for 6 months I would suggest as 3 months is too short and 12 months is a lot.
