Hi, I did one back in 2018 and listed everything I thought I might take, it ended up being much less and no one cared.  I didn’t list everything separately, but just said “kitchen utensils “, “clothes”, “towels” etc.

If you have a pet, you need to list that as well.

hope the system is better than when I did it, it was still quite new then. It didn’t allow a very big upload but didn’t warn you it hadn’t been accepted! It was awful, I ended up ringing and getting it done.

More recent movers seem to have had a more streamlined experience.

Good luck with your move. It’s currently raining!

Thanks. Did you use a movecube?

  2. Hi

I'm looking into moving back to the UK so I contacted seven seas about a move cube.

I had no idea I needed to do a Hmrc transfer resident application to avoid taxes in UK. This seems quite in depth and I'm concerned of the time it will take.

I can't list the items that I will be sending yet but I need to do it soon as  your advised to allow up to six weeks.

Can anyone share their experiences please?

  3. Hi Gharry

We sold the property and we did the Capital gains tax return for HMRC within the 60 day time frame.

We will be including the Capital gains in our Aus returns when we get round to doing them.

If you sell it when resident in Australia you need to do returns for both UK and AUS.

You should have it valued when you move to Aus because the Capital gain is calculated from the value of the property at the time you became resident in Aus and not the amount you paid for it.

Good luck with the sale. Ours fell through but sold second time around.

  4. Thanks for the links Marisa,

So I can get the UK and Aus pension if in Australia, the UK state pension wouldn't prevent me from qualifying for the Aus aged pension?

If taxed on superannuation that is sent over to the UK, is it taxed like any other income where you have an allowance of what you can earn before taxed?

There would be no way to avoid UK tax on your super, if  you return to the UK before you reach 'preservation age' (currently 60).

If you can commit to staying in Australia until AFTER you reach preservation age, then you'd have one option:  withdraw all your super in one lump sum and put it in a bank account while you are still living in Australia.  Once that's done, it's just money in the bank, and you can safely depart and transfer the money with no tax implications.

The risk is that they could increase the preservation age (they've done it before, from 55 to 60).  So you could be planning based on age 60, and then they'd increase it to 65, and then you're stuck in Australia for another 5 years, which might not suit you.

To be honest, if you can't see yourself growing old in Australia, I'd be thinking very seriously about moving home sooner rather than later. We've had a few members (including me) who thought of retiring in the UK after a working life in Australia, and discovered it just wasn't affordable. If you want to retire in the UK, you really need to get back there in your late 40s/early 50s to get yourself re-established, get a pension plan going etc.

    Thanks for the advice.

The main reason I'm not sure where I will end up is because of retirement age.

I thought it would be easier there because of private pensions and the state pension that I'm still contributing to.

If I could stay here I'd like to.. but have no idea what the best option is to build a retirement fund. Maybe my super account isn't very good but they all seem to just take fees and the money isn't growing.

  6. I'm 42 years old and looking into paying more into my super but before I commit to putting more money in:

As I don't know where I will be at retirement age, can anyone advise me on if I move back to UK before I can take out my Super, how you avoid UK tax?

If I was in UK I would set up a private pension which has tax incentives. Here, I'm not aware of anything like that so if I'm paying into super I want to know if I will be taxed in UK.

I want my money to grow as it would in a pension fund.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

  7. Hi

We have a property in UK we are hoping to sell this year.it has been rented out up until now.

This is our only property. We live in a rental in Australia and do include the figures in our tax returns for UK and Aus.

I have been looking at the UK tax rules and we shouldn't owe any CGT there based on my expenses I will be claiming and the tax allowance we can both claim.

I'm not sure about here in Australia though, When I declare the sale in the tax return here . I cannot find what I can claim in expenses here, is it the same - kitchen, bathroom upgrades etc?

Also, we have lived in the property in the past. Can I claim any private residential relief for a period like you can in the UK?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    David

It would be illegal not to declare it in Australia, if you are resident here.

Note that if it's rented out, you must also declare the rental income on your Australian tax return.  It's illegal not to, and if you get caught (and you will be, because the two countries are sharing information more nowadays than they used to), it's a massive fine.

I agree that you need a tax agent who understands the tax system in both countries because it gets complicated.

Yes, I will declare it if I sell it and it is being rented out now and I do declare the rental income on my Australian tax return. I also do a UK tax return for this too.

Its more advice on actually selling it from here that I'm looking for just now.

We’re going to be doing exactly this within 18 months. I’d heavily suggest contacting an account skilled in both country’s tax laws such as Alan Collet who’s frequently mentioned on here and will be handling my CGT submission when the time comes.

It does look a bit complex. We used to live in it but has been rented out for a while now.

  10. Hi

Is there anyone here who has experience in selling their UK home while living in Australia?

It the opportunity comes, I'd like to sell but everything would need to be done from Australia.

My brother lives close to the property so can decorate etc and meet the real estate agent at the property but after that would like them to do viewings etc.

I know this would cost more but don't have many options when I'm living here. Can't ask too many favours from people. Just wondering if anyone can share their experiences and give advice.

    Thanks

  11. I just want to get the equivalent if I can and take it from there.

If I was in UK i'd try to get into Health and Safety. No idea about here though. I'm a bricky and just want off the tools, I'm in Melbourne.

  12. I have an HNC in construction management.

Has anyone got experience in using this in Australia? Whether this can get recognition or if i would need to do the equivalent courses again over here?

    Guys citizenship ceremonies going online...

People who have given tests still getting approved but at a lower pace..

Ones who have to give tests need to wait bcoz there is no online process for that..

But once restrictions ease, they will put more resources to catchup.

    Great news..

Our hardwork and petition got answered.

How do you know approvals are still being processed?
