OP check out the type 1 diabetics in Australia Facebook group. You'll get great information from folks about costs there.

I think that's where I saw the original announcement that only so many are entitled. Everyone was kicking off in the comments about how it should be available to all T1s. In case it isn't I'll have another look. Cheers.

  2. For anyone interested, Freestyle Libre sensors and other flash glucose monitors are fully subsidised through NDIS but only to a select proportion of T1 sufferers. Including under 21s, pregnant women, pensioners with a particular card, and anyone with a DHA healthcare card. The latter seems to be only for those on benefits from what I can see.

So 58,000 are eligible of the estimated 180,000 T1s in Australia. Otherwise it's $95 a fortnight.

I was diagnosed type 2 on Thursday last week, I went to a local private Diabetic clinic, was charged $120 for a 1 hour consultation, which included blood test kit, had a  $55 rebate on Medicare. The form for NDIS filled in while there, should have been sent off immediately, but got mixed into my information folder. Handed into my pharmacist Friday morning, NDIS number emailed several hours later, card to follow, can’t fault that,  I’m a PR but not entitled to any benefits. As of yet I don’t need any medication, so I can’t help with ongoing costs.

Hope that helps a little, it’s hard if you have an ongoing health condition to cope with the necessary cost to control the condition, as my daughter is epileptic, and has a hefty monthly prescription bill.

Sorry to hear that. Hope you're getting on ok with it all. Despite being an adult I only got diagnosed with a rare form of t1 diabetes 3 years ago so can empathise.

  4. Thanks everyone for your responses. Yes the libre sensor is a sticky plastic patch with a needle that sits on your arm but needs replacing every 2 weeks. Costs £50 per fortnight in the Uk but i get it free on prescription. It's a game changer after pricking my finger tips to draw blood for so long, and let's me keep my blood sugar levels relatively normal. I'm 39 btw so not near pension age yet.

I'll check out the linked site for more info. From previous research I found a little on insulin costs but nothing on subsidised availability of the libre sensor.

  5. Hi

I'm a type 1 diabetic currently treated by insulin. My blood sugar levels are monitored via a Freestyle Libre sensor on my arm. Both are supplied for free via NHS prescription. A couple of questions for any diabetics that have emigrated.

Are Freestyle Libre sensors available and subsidised via Medicare?

How much are your average prescription costs per month?

Appreciate this is quite niche so any help appreciated.

    Thanks

So we invested heavily ($25) on a tent.

Just got back from Habitat Noosa (edge of the everglades).Glorious sunrise with the roos, 15km hike in 30 degree plus heat , then 'swim' in lake - about a foot deep!

Usual weather deterioration when we decide to go. 50mm rain, thunder and lightning, tent was mostly dry

    Bit calmer next day

That photo across the lake with the sunset is sensational. Life goals!

What are you going to do with your home sell up if you get a visa ?
if it’s that bad you are going to be getting knocked down on price or if you do the work you will get your money back. So will have money in the end.

    Not initially no.

It's not bad. It's a really nice house. We'd be changing things based on personal preference.

I'd agree with the others, don't put your life on hold, if the garden needs doing then  get on with it. Assume you'll be staying then anything else is a bonus.

I'm talking about projects where the financial cost would scupper the migration funds, rather than pulling up a few weeds, although I'd be open to excuses to get out of that 😉

  9. I've not got to EOI yet. Does this mean that each state can see that you've applied for another?

Even so I'm surprised that it's frowned upon. A lot of people just want to live in Australia regardless of state (rightly or wrongly).

I understand the OP's point about life being on hold, especially financially. I'm looking at our tired garden and would overhaul it but would prefer to save the money for Oz. There's a few things around the house like that.

  10. There are quite a few rolling contracts in the UK. My wife's is £10 a month, cancel at any time and very generous with allowances. Like suggested further up, check out uswitch and toggle the filters for your allowance needs.

Sorry for the late reply.  SA was the state nomination.  At the time of my state nomination application in April 2020, for my occupation I was permitted to apply based offshore, which I believe is now not the case.  Lots has changed since and for 491 ITA are largely for critical occupations and also need to be based onshore.

Ok thanks and congrats on your progress 👍

Waiting since feb 4th 2020 - still saying received. We are frustrated too. We have a now 15 year old son and  getting more and more concerned about moving during exam years.  It’s just so frustrating that we have all put in so much time, energy and money and then they have no timeline to adhere to and we have no way to track progress. It’s a lot of money to invest into something that you’re completely in the dark and have your future at the mercy of someone else. When I see people have been waiting 3 years I want to cry.

3 years is way before COVID. I'm surprised. What's the delay on these?

From what agents have been saying, the overhaul will affect what occupations are on the list.  That's the point, because Covid caused such a spike in unemployment and obviously, they don't want the bad publicity of bringing in migrants if there are locals looking for jobs, who could be reskilled (whether that's realistic or not, the government is all about what looks good).

Oh no. Not what I wanted to hear. Hopefully healthcare will be unaffected.

  14. A couple of questions off the back of OP's post.

If an EOI is submitted does it sit in a queue until offshore applicants are invited again, or is it rejected based on current conditions?

Secondly in PIOer's opinions how likely is the current skilled occupation list likely to stay in place once borders reopen and offshore invites are active again? I know the odd role comes and goes. We're at the start of the process so don't want to pay for a skills assessment for a role that is on the list but not being invited for offshore applicants, if the whole list will be overhauled once offshore are invited again.

I've heard there'll be an overhaul to the visa process but I'm not sure if that relates to the visa subclasses available (with an emphasis on regional Oz) or overhauling the occupation list.

We got everything including the kitchen sink in our 20-footer with room to spare, but we don't have kids. The shipping agent will visit and quote you for free - they have a program/app that works out how much space you'll need. We got quotes for PSS and Anglo-Pacific, and we went with PSS in the end.

Sounds like that would do us then although we'd probably leave the kitchen sink 😉

We do have a little'un but he doesn't have much stuff.

We had a 3-bed semi and we got it all in a 20 footer with room to spare in the end.

What level of stuff did you bring? Are we talking sofa, beds, wardrobes inc smaller stuff, or just mostly boxed things? Interested as I can never fathom what size is required.

I wonder what he means by conditionality of temporary visas. Appreciate that the objective is to drive migrants to regional areas but could conditionality mean stricter conditions around that? I thought the 491 visa already addressed this.

So, EOI submission was around January 2020, lodged for state nomination on 24 April 2020, received invitation to apply (ITA) from SA on 28 June, submitted 491 visa application online on 21 August, visa grant 5 Feb.  I am offshore with occupation 334111 Plumber with 75 points.

Which state nominated you RD? I thought only onshore with the exception of some critical, mostly healthcare roles were being considered for 491. Or was this before all that was put in place?
