  1. Hi,

I submitted my EOI in July 2018 for 190 NSW and 189. I'm a secondary school teacher and have 65 points at the moment, plus the 5 for state nomination. Haven't had an invite for either and not expecting one this financial year. My points increase by 5 in July to 70 because I'll have more experience, but even on 70 I'm not too hopeful at the moment. There's just so much uncertainty and change.

Regardless, I'm heading out to WA in August on a tourist visa to check out areas, but might go and look at Adelaide as SA is inviting teachers on a 489 (with 80 points). I'd recommend looking at 489 options.

    Best of luck.

  2. 75 points is now the minimum amount of points to get invited on a 189, according to the March results... It is literally never going to happen, is it? I had my eyes on the prize for when my points total jumps to 70 in July, but now I am seriously losing all hope.

The 190 isn't happening for anyone without a PhD and 20 years experience.

The new regional visas are looking increasingly like the only route in.

    Gutted.

Wow... and that invite will most likely be ignored because that many points will get them a 189. At least we know what the cut-off is at current though. 80 points for a highly employable profession, and 75 for software engineers to manage retail.

Haha it's such a joke. I even said "why would anyone even take the 190 if they had that many points?"

Did you happen to read about second applicants being able to take the English language test and their score will contribute towards the application? I'm hoping that's the case, so that my wife can do it and give us 5 more points, which will bring us back to 70 points in November.

can I ask how did you contact the department? I was offered a permanent job at a public school and the principal is willing to wait for 2 yrs till I get my PR. I submitted a week ago my EOI with 70 (189) and 75 pts (190 NSW) howeverI havent been invited yet. Do you think my principal should call the department of education?

No, with 70 points for 189 you should be invited within a round or two more. You''ll be fine.

  5. I got a response from someone in the NSW department for education. They said that apparently someone got invited last month on 80 points, so it is still open... but seriously, 80 points?! Probably the only one invited this year. Feel completely dejected now. Never going to happen unless I do a PHd and can stop my age clock.

Maybe not retired, but lost too many points to age.

I don't think Gladys is directly anti-migrant, but she has exploited the misplaced anti-migrant sentiment to blame-shift her infrastructure failures and is under party pressure to continue doing so. And since she got re-elected, why not more of the same? Very disheartening.

Assuming Rob Stokes [https://www.nsw.gov.au/your-government/ministers/minister-for-education/] returns as NSW Education Minister, everyone should write him and ask how they plan to supply 4600 new teachers.

Aside from the relatively high number of 'suitable applicants' and the profession earning a 'no-shortage' label (as does basically every profession soaking up the majority of migration invites), the latest government report [https://docs.jobs.gov.au/documents/school-teachers-nsw] is a laundry list of why getting that many new teachers will be very difficult. Rising enrollment, attrition rates, decline in applicants, decline in new teacher education enrollement. Heck, it even reports on the average age of teachers being notably higher than in other professions (disconnected as one of the reasons we typically don't get as many points for migration).

So I emailed his department and someone got back to me this morning. It was very generic and didn't clarify anything regarding teachers being invited or remaining on the list, just the standard "competition is fierce, we rank our criteria by occupation, high points, high level of English" bla bla bla.

I emailed back basically saying if I had more points, I wouldn't need 190, nor would anyone else, as 70 is usually enough to be invited on a 189. I said I had superior English, almost 3 years employment in the skilled occupation, and therefore should qualify if you still actually need teachers. I asked them to tell me why, if I'm hitting the criteria as best as most can, why aren't we invited or why is the skill still on the list.

I'm not holding my breath for any groundbreaking news...

Haven’t read your other posts so not sure if this is relevant to you but you could go over on a working holiday visa and work as a teacher.  Would get some more points for Australian experience and at least you would be waiting in the sunshine!! If you go this route then make sure you get your Australian (state specific) teachers registration done before you go as that takes months!! Good luck

Hi Sarah. I've already done the WHV in 2011 and am now too old to do it anyway.

  8. I'm seriously losing the will to live...

Right! I've got 65 points at the moment. Can't get any more until July when I get 5 more for experience. Tired of waiting. 189 will not happen anytime soon, and NSW are killing my soul with their inaction. What other options are there? I specialise in English and Media Studies but can teach any humanities subject. I'm all ears to suggestions!

You'd probably get a 189 invite in 2-3 months at 70 points depending on how much the backlog increases before then. I'm seeing zero secondary teacher invites in NSW, so if you haven't gotten it at 70pts, I doubt the extra 5 will make a difference (10 might). They will either decide to invite teachers or not; I do not think the line is long, those with 70+ under 189 have already gone that route, so it's just the dregs like you and me waiting on a 190.

Federal election is anticipated in May.

The 489 sucks because it is provisional. If for some reason you can not get 1 year of full time employment in the specified region you will not qualify to advance to permanent residency; this is particularly problematic for NSW as the regions are broken down into finite sectors within the state (not like SA where basically the entire state is fair game). If you do not want to resort to the service sector, that is a real risk in any professional level occupation, as migrants (particularly those without AU work history) will always be a last choice. It's significantly less risky as a native English speaking white person (not endorsing racial bias, just stating a fact), particularly in a profession like secondary teacher, but still a risk. There is a reason migrants goto the cities (or nearby), and despite a handful of regional areas crying out for migrants, they have policies that discourage those who would be interested and in need of 'extra' points.

Do you think that if Gladys gets the boot in March and Labor win, that we might see teachers get invites? I still really can't make out why teachers haven't been invited and yet have still been on the skills list this whole time.

Yes, a handful of people were invited to drive Uber and work at Kmart on the 13th.

Labor is more likely to return skilled immigration to former levels because of the economic benefit; and their campaign platform is not entrenched in the demonization of immigration. Both parties however, are pledging over 4000 new teachers in the next 4 years, an unprecedented level of growth (amid a 10 year low in applicants). From the stats I've seen, that will only be possible if they increase their 190 teacher intake from this years zero (so far). They don't necessarily need a lot, but there are probably less than 50 of us waiting. However, If the Liberals hold, they will attribute it in part to heir anti-immigration position, and will more likely fail to deliver the teachers rather than increase migrant intake.

Unfortunately, nobody seem interested in migration reform, only viewing it as a 'more' or 'less' numbers game. They are content to let things chug along dis-functionally and flood the service sector with pro-ratas.

I'm going up in points to 70 in July. What are the chances of a quick invite for either a 189 or even 190 (on 75)? 489 is going to be my last resort... Do you think that because federal elections take place in August that they'll close things down for a prolonged period?

Why not apply for a 489 visa then?  Currently open on skills lists in Murray and Southern Inland NSW?

Because I'm waiting until July when I will go up in points to 70, so am hoping I'll stand more of a chance of getting the visa I want. If I was to take the 489 route, it'd be to Adelaide, as I don't want to be in a tiny town for 2 years.

We would be happy to work and live anywhere if it would mean we could stay,  but they are not even inviting for regional visa’s.. My husband is a Science teacher and from what I heard, regional NSW is desperate for Science teachers. But I am starting to wonder if they might even take Secondary School teachers off the lists in the new financial year, would make sense as, like you say, there is no shortage apparently and they are hardly inviting anyway. Wonder if we will ever be able to come back 🙁

When was the last time they took secondary teachers off of the list? Is this idea of them taking the occupation off the list just conjecture? if they took it off, I don't know what I'd do with my life!

  13. My points will increase from 65 to 70 in July for 3 years experience as a teacher. I'll be putting another EOI in then as well as updating my first one. Do you think this might help my chances?

I'm 32, so in November I turn 33 and my points will decrease back to 65. So frustrating. Should I expect an invite before then or not? Ideally I want to go on a 189 rather than a 190, but I can't understand what NSW are doing in relation to not inviting any secondary teachers this year... any explanation as to what NSW are doing in terms of invites for teachers would be greatly appreciated.
