What did you wear for the interview? what questions do they ask, and how hard is the actual test (I have mine tomorrow!)

    thanks

Suit and tie/your family history going back three generations/if you did well in the Mensa entrance exam the citizenship test is passable!

On another forum, a sept 9 applicant got his test today, yet some April 20 apps are yet to get a test! This is the most bizarre allocation system I’ve ever seen can’t get my head around how they are prioritzing and processing applications at this stage.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't work on a first come basis nationally ....Sept does seem odd though!

I wonder if Malcolm realises the effect of this situation. I’m now a citizen got my passport and on the electoral roll. I never thought I’d say this but my first vote in Australia is likely to be Labour.

I wonder how many also think the same.

Mal and his not so clever pal have lost a sh*t-ton of votes but before you jump on the labor bandwagon consider their stance on other issues which are less desirable! Surely there has to be someone other than the two majors worth voting for?

  4. ..."The revised start date for the changes would be from 1 July 2018 if the government can seal a deal to get them through parliament."

..."SBS News understands all applications received until then will be processed under the existing law."...

So....changes are inevitable....it's just a matter of time and negotiation but I would bet there will be some sort of English language testing, PR for more than 12 months etc. Importantly I hope the move to grab more power is cut short irrespective of future negotiations.

  5. Potato head probably won't bring the bill to a vote, that way in his limited mind he wouldn't have lost! The bill will simply be iced! If nothing happens by tomorrow he'll have little choice but to process frozen apps in accordance with current legislation!

This whole thing has been such a huge waste of time, 7 months waiting on hold and in the end its all just BS.

Was this even legal for Peter Dutton to freeze applications without a law being in place.

It's not over for Dutton - his pride will likely prevent him from admitting defeat even at the expense of future votes!

Anyway, it's not over until it is and the fat lady has yet to sing!

  7. Of all the changes this is the most significant:

New Powers for Minister (possible but might be watered down a bit) - should be scrapped!

A politician should never be in a position where he/she has too much power - for the most part they lack the mental capacity and self-control to properly administer the power with which they've been entrusted.

As for asian and chinese communities implying there's a racist under-current to the proposals...well....that's just frustrating (ever heard the story of the boy who cried wolf?)! If the presumption of racism exists why put yourselves through the misery of staying here? Surely then they would be for more comfortable in a more familiar less hostile environment? I suspect accusations of suspected racism are simply more convenient than actually having to come up with a structured and sensible argument!

  8. So the answer is yes - you are basing your opinion on the assumption that you possibly qualify for PR from the get-go! What about those that don't ie 457s, students, partners etc where PR is not an option off the bat? They're the ones complaining about 4 years over an above time they've already put in! No - just in case another assumption is made I'm not in either of those boats!

They potentially have a valid argument if Govt's sole motivation re. the 4 yr argument is to allow for more touchy-feely, let's get to know each other better time. Their argument is what happened in the years prior to the PR grant and why are they simply discounted!

I wonder though if there's is currently potential to migrate from TR-PR-Citizenship in less than 4 yrs? If so, surely that is something the proposed amendments should address!

Can do a skills assessment and go for PR anytime - just saying!

Really? Last I heard you couldn't apply anytime (could be wrong).......just saying!!! Are you basing your opinion on the assumption that you could (at least in theory) qualify for PR from the get-go?

  10. 3 hours ago, AJ said:

If you came over PR to start with you had to have 4 years residency before citizenship.  If you came on a temp visa like a 457 you still had to do 4 years but only the last one had to be PR.  Now everyone has to have 4 years PR regarless of what visa.  I dont see anything wrong with that.

It may be a factor for someone that has to pay all the taxes without any of the benefits/say typically available to PR's/citizens!

    Just saying........

    When did Dutton say that?

    Google is your friend....

"Mr Dutton said he would not water down the proposed laws.

"We're not going to compromise to the left of the Labor party. The left of the Labor party is out of step with the broader Australian public. The public wants to see an increase in the English language requirement, they want to see people meet Australian laws and values."
