1. You have to ask yourself why? why am I moving from a first world country to another first world country? why do you think Oz is better than the UK, it cant be because of the weather because that would be plain silly to be honest...there must be something that is driving you...if you can come up with some good ones then try it.

Errrrm this is very judgemental and lacks incite! Being in a hot climate IS A VALID AND MAJOR reason to want to move to another country. All things being equal in two 'first world' countries then of course climate can play a major role in the decision. It's these kind of statements that have raised some fireworks on this forum. Just because it may be a minor factor in your life doesn't mean it has to be for everyone. I say to OP just have a look at the pros and cons like already said and if HOT WEATHER IS part of your main reasons then yeah you have a good enough reason to try it out. It's good to hear both sides of the coin but some people here are hell bent on trying to point the bleakest picture of Oz. If it's another first world then it will be hard to settle but it's no Basra. Phew!

2. Out of respect maybe you should ask the mods to remove this and start another thread.?

Let them speak. Good to hear something that is NOT right wing being said on your many posts.

3. I used a radius tool when we are looking - something like this will give you an idea of suburbs - this should give you 10k from the centre of preston
http://obeattie.github.io/gmaps-radius/?lat=-37.731111&lng=145.021012&z=12&u=km&r=10
then just plug those suburbs into realestate.com.au and you're good to go.

Thanks for this. Trying to navigate with it on smartphone it's a little cranky. Will use desktop.

4. Ah ok - Preston isnt really the CBD. If it is preston, then north would be better. Look at the suburbs along the South Morang line and see if you can hit the sweet spot between price and travel time

That's what I thought. Will check out South Morang sure. It's such a hard thing to find the balance between travel distance and convenience especially when still of shore like I am. Plus when you keep hearing warnings upon warnings on the rise of housing expenses in Melbourne it's worrying. Thanks for taking time to help out. Really appreciate it.

5. Who can say really why it is.
Just like in England certain suburbs are more desirable than others for no readily apparant reason.
In Melbourne, the Eastern suburbs have traditionally been the most expensive and desireable along with the bayside suburbs like Brighton.
I think a trend just sets in and then it is self perpetuating.
North and West are generally cheaper and then at the edges of the cities brand new suburbs are being created and they are cheap but very limited infrastructure.

Okay I get you now. Amazing how easily manipulated we all are hey. I am assuming that when you say infrastructure you mean mainly shops and trains right?

6. Does it have to be North Melb?
South East can meet your requirements easily. Cranbourne will hit your budget, but the infrastructure is still being built out.
Carrum Downs and Langwarrin (where we are) will also come into your budget as well. Langwarrin is 10minutes to the station driving and then the express train is 50mins to the CBD (so with the faffing about, just about in your timeframe)

Well we are not specifically fussed on which side of town but I am working on the assumption of securing a job in and around Preston area so I had assumed it would be easier to stay north of CBD than having to cut across town to get to work. Is this incorrect?

7. There are affordable suburbs around where you will be able to buy something in your price range.
They are probably a bit over 60 minutes away though.
There are newer suburbs where the inrastructure won't be as good as established suburbs.
I think it is harder to get a capital growth in these areas though. The houses are cheaper for a reason as the demand lis less.

Thanks Parley. I hear what you are saying. Just that when you listen to people talking here it's as if certain suburbs are 'ghettofied' which probably isn't the case. You mentioned lack of capital growth because the demand is less. Do you mind giving an insight of why these areas are generally unappealing to the residents if the infrastructure is not too dissimilar to the more established suburbs?

8. I am aware a few threads regarding this topic have been done so I am going to be a bit more specific hopefully.

Planning to take the plunge but as we've all been warned that house prices in North Melbs have shot up significantly how are people affording this? Is it doable to buy a home in the 550 - 600k mark within a radius of 60 mins max travel into the CBD for work?

I will be looking for 3+ bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 2 cars parking spots. Don't care for the coast and would like a decent (read leafy) suburb which is child friendly. Tennis club nearby wouldn't hurt too[emoji12].

I have been on domain.com and seen houses for price range but have no idea what kind of neighbourhoods they are. Hopefully someone can help?

Cheers

9. Hi Matt. I see no one has answered so I am going to try and say a little. I am also a BMS and did look into the 189 but like you I was faced with the prospect of sitting the AIMS exam. I did IELTS as well which was easy and got assessed as a MLA.

I looked at the questions and although they appear relatively easy I have zero experience in anything other than Haematology. Now I have decided against doing it as it's all too much cause I am in the middle of an MSc. I am now planning to go with an alternative visa and just take my chance with jobs. There aren't many of us on these forums so you may struggle to get help here.

About AIMS and IBMS, they have no link whatsoever and I find this strange. I think if one is a member then they should have concessions. Sorry couldn't help but all the best.

10. This is for those who left the UK with PR already in place. I am aware that it is harder to secure a job whilst offshore but are there any individuals who managed this successfully? Would love to hear about any recent stories especially in the social work field or similar. I am hoping to land in Melbourne.

Many thanks,

Apollo

11. Zatara80 I am curious that you feel Australia will offer your kids more opportunities. I guess it depends what they want to do with life. There will always be jobs in hospitality and public services but technology is changing the Australian work place significantly and personally I see this increasing. For example there are 5 TV stations. One has just gone bankrupt and the ABC is continually downsizing. Fast forward 10 years and I reckon there will only be 3 at most. People now stream from overseas. Likewise retail is consolidating as more and more people buy online. The company I worked for downsized by 25% and moved it's  finance and IT services to Asia with no negative consequences for users.
I  guess this applies to Europe as well but technology means fewer and fewer jobs  need to be based in Aus. As for Brexit the UK is likely to take a temporary hit but remember even the great depression of the 30s only lasted a decade. I am not going to predict which country will be in a better state in 10 years time, it could be either IMO.
Anyway you sound like you have thought very carefully about it so good luck with the  move

I know where my money is on the likely 'state of Britain' in 10 years post-Brexit. That is all I am going to say.

12. My advice.

Go for it knowing what you know BUT if you can apply for PR ASAP either direct entry 186 or independent 189/190 if at all possible.  Things can and do change as VS noted, and not usually for the better!
If you wait for transition and it falls through at the last minute ( seems to happen a lot if you read these and other forums) your OH will have a limited time to apply for PR also with regard to his age.  Better to get a skills assessment and apply sooner whilst the job is on the list.  In two years it may not be on the list . You could even start the process now and apply for PR alongside the 457.  Personally I would not take the risk without having a plan for PR that didn't rely on an employer, even local gov departments make sweeping cuts..............

Victoria don't charge school fees at the moment but I expect that will change, other states have changed their policy in the recent past.

This[emoji115]. I am also in this position, well kind of. What I presumed was that one is allowed to apply for more than one application at a time so it is possible that you get the 457 done and then soon after apply for a 189 'off your own back'. There is no rule against this as far as I am aware. The body applying for your 457 and the relocation package have nothing to do with the PR visa you would have applied independently. I know two people doing this. This could reduce your worries in case your workplace went tits up. If this is incorrect then I stand to be corrected by someone.
