  1. Hi fliss
Yeah my agent mentioned it could happen but she said it’s worth a try , we are going to Darwin in the Northern Territory, where are you hoping to end up ? Have you got family in oz?
I struggled with the speaking every time! It seems crazy as I’m a native English girl but I just froze and my nerves got the better of me, got 7 and above In the other modules every time! Anyways 3rd time lucky I passed.

  2. Hi fliss- I found it handy too , I think I had the results back in a couple of weeks, we are about to have our medicals next week , then fingers crossed they come back ok , that will be the last thing I hope, and yeah I just explained with hand gestures and talked it through step by step, I found the skills assessment easy it was the English test I struggled with , but got there in the end.what visa are you applying for? X

  3. Hi , I did my skills assessment at the beginning of the year , I got asked things about , the 3 different stages of hair growth, about primary and secondary colours, how to do graduated bob step by step , how I would do full head foils , how I would handle a complaint, how I work with someone’s face shape , shampoo massage techniques, sterilising equipment, how to do a men’s scissor over comb , stock take .......
all things you learn when you start hairdressing to be honest , I used my old theory books and there is a thread on here somewhere that people wrote down questions they’d been asked. That was very helpful

  4. Oh my, I thought at that stage it would be "all GO"
Im really sorry to hear this............
are considering another country or staying where you are?
So at some point was there salary expectations required? This is my main concern becuase as it stands my trade isnt valid in the NT so everything will depend on the hairdressing status?!
We have already lost a lot when I applied a few years ago and they changed the rules mid process so to lose even more and effectively put your life on hold for this length of time is quite a daunting process.
We have had a decent summer here so having passed the IELTS we still need to work on her skills assessment so in order to get things started we should really get motivated again!!

Hi, I think a lot depends on what visa you are applying for, ?
We have just had invitation for 489 visa to apply for nt (hairdresser) , originally wanted the 190 permanent visa, but it seems they aren’t giving many of these out at the moment,
    Great about the ielts [emoji1360]
The skills assessment is pretty straightforward, but just adds to the waiting game!
We are estimating that by the time we get the visa granted (that’s if we do, fingers crossed) and enter the country it will be 2 years of a job [emoji51]
  5. Hi Scott
There is a thread on here that’s been running a few years, with a lot of infomation on the whole vetesses skills assessment process and detailed lists of the questions they ask for the technical interview.
It’s a long read but well worth it. See below.
I did my skills assessment Sept 2017. Submitted visa application in Nov 2017. No news yet.
The wait will be very long unfortunately.
    Good luck.

    Hi brills33,
It really is a long wait isn’t it, what visa route are you going down and where are you heading in oz? And have you got kids ?
We applied for a 190 but have recently just been offered the 489 instead, but hey it’s a offer we’re not refusing, so we have just got to wait for the grant now
  6. Palmerston is pretty good, to my way of thinking. My son was an army chappie, living in the suburb of Durack for six years and we would stay with him. A 50  metre walk to the golf course, 100 metres to barramundi fishing in the golf course ponds, A very good shopping centre, a 20 minute drive to the Darwin, etc.
Been going to the Darwin for better than 45 years, When I first went there, the world ended at Winellie caravan park...It’s grown a bit since...It’s not for everyone, but, if you knuckle down and serve your initial there, it can be rewarding.
    Cheers, Bobj.

Thanks for your reply, we will certainly be having a good look around when we arrive, there looks to be some great places there, we will certainly make the best of it , if you go with a positive mind set , things seem a lot better

  7. I was up there in June and having a drive round. Came across the surf club, not far up the coast and there were people out windsurfing. I asked a surf club member if it was safe and she asked where I was from. When I said Perth she said everyone thinks the oceans not safe in Darwin down there.[emoji2]
At certain times of year you can go in, usually in the dry and be fairly safe. Mindil beach gets busy and I think it's safe for a swim sometimes. You are right about the box jellyfish and irukandji jellyfish though. Small but dangerous and very painful I've heard. Also the odd crocodile. There's a croc story in the NT  news paper every day. I take it home when I'm up there to give the wife a laugh. You wouldn't believe what they get away with. PC hasnt quite reached the NT yet. Refreshing I find it.

    Ahh that’s good to know,
And great ! It’ll give us something to have a laugh about when we get the local paper, if you think of anything else that might be useful, don’t hesitate to message [emoji3]
  8. Darwin is a bit rough and ready but I like it. It's improved immensely over the last 10 years or so. They've really done up the docks area with a big enclosed swimming lagoon and the biggest wave park in the Southern Hemisphere. Some good restaurants and pubs. Nice atmosphere there and I like the main street too. Lively, lots of backpackers, good nightlife. If you are married with kids though that might not appeal too much but it's still good to go out early, take the kids and have some decent pub grub. Obviously shorts and T shirt weather the whole year round.
As for Palmerston it may look close on google maps but it's still a fair way out and when it's hot in Darwin it feels hotter in Palmerston. There is a shopping centre and not much else going for it. There are lots more nicer suburbs closer to Darwin. It's really nice around Callum Bay and the Casino, right on Mindil beach is good. Not a gambler myself and only go there for the bar looking over the ocean, decently priced beer and you can get a good meal there in a great Italian restaurant with million dollar views for decent prices. They do an excellent pizza. There are 3 or 4 cheaper restaurants in the casino too, it's pretty big.
Lots of places have live music and open mike nights.
    Excited yet?[emoji41]

Great thanks for been so informative, will be looking into lagoons, and the wave pool as my kids will love this including hubby!
The ocean is a no go for swimming isn’t with the box jelly fish? And odd croc I’ve heard [emoji51]
Going out early with the kids for food and a few drinks suits us just fine, great will look into Callum bay, and the casino , we all like a good pizza!
Very excited, it’s gonna be a adventure if anything!
Thanks for all your helpful tips, much appreciated
  9. Fair enough, was just hoping you had done some background work as the NT is rather different from the rest of the country. I wouldn't have lived there if you paid me, not with that climate, but some people love the humidity.

Oh yeah we’ve done loads of internet searching but having not been there I was hoping to get helpful tips off people who lived there,
Not our first choice but it’s the only state/Territory sponsoring my trade so it’s our only choice if we want to make Australia home! And as part of the visa conditions we have to live here for 2 year minimum, and then can move anywhere we please!
  10. If it's Darwin then that's Ok. It's a decent sized City and has everything that a family would need. Personally I would choose a suburb close to City and close to the Ocean. It always seems a bit cooler when it gets really hot. Don't like Palmerston one bit.
Darwin has a wet and dry parts of the year so no spring, summer, autumn, winter. It's nice to go there from Perth in our winter months as it's the dry up there. Just about perfect temps.
I've been there in the wet though when it's hot, humid and wet. Tropical wet, rain like you've never seen before. Not as nice.
If it's anywhere else in the NT with a family, risky.

Hi Paul thanks for your helpful reply, we have been looking into different suburbs around the ocean , and Darwin, what don’t you like about Palmerston? Is it the people? Houses ?
Yes heard about the wet and dry season , but hey ho beggars can’t be choosers
    Thanks again
  11. So you applied for a 190 visa from NT but you have no clue about cost of living, schooling, kid's activities there?
I thought you needed to provide a statement to the NT government showing that you'd done detailed research on the Territory and were aware of the cost of living - as well as other things - before they would nominate you.
    Did you not do that?

Yes done all that ! Sorry do you live in Darwin/ Northern Territory I take it ? Can you give any advice on my questions or have you just jumped on my post to be sarcastic
I was asking questions and hoping people who are loving in parts of the Northern Territory would comment and give tips, as sitting behind a screen and doing research is very different compared to someone who can give helpful tips who is living there on a day to day basis
  12. Did he not do any investigation into working prospects before applying for sponsorship?

We are going in on my skill not my husbands, but I was asking for my husband as he doesn’t like the thought of bern out of work for any length of time, of course we’ve looked on the job advertising sites but it’s a bit different than getting advice off people who are living there
  13. Hi We have just found out that we have been offered a 489 visa to live in the Northern Territory, can anyone share there experience of work, cost of living, primary schools, things to do for children (boys 8&10years) , the people, nice family safe suburbs, places to avoid ? Just anything that would be helpful in general , also husband is a ground worker/ machine operator, is there work around up there for this type of trade ? Thanks in advance for reply’s

  14. Hi I’m trying to get a idea of how much in total it will be to ship our 3 year old English bulldog over from the uk, will probably be flying out of Manchester, so from start to finish- price to include vets, flight, quarantine etc, any answers will be greatly appreciated,

Also has anyone brought a English bulldog over, ? If so how did it manage and how does it manage in the heat? Ours is pretty fit and healthy so been ok with our summer this year, we obviously don’t walk midday, we’ll normally go first thing before it’s to warm.

    Many thanks

  15. Well I’m not very experienced so can’t give much advice but we have just got to the point where we have submitted our eoi to the state that is sponsoring my trade (it’s not where we want to be but it’s a moral obligation to live in the state that sponsors you for at least 2 years) and it has taken the best part of 8 months to get here, their is so much information to get together it has been so stressful

  16. Hiya, I think you get offered state sponsorship depending if that state requires your skills, have you had a look if your trade is on the list for that state ? Then you have to to a skilled assessment before you apply for state sponsorship
