  1. Well, after a little research we have widened our search area. more or better for the money is a big thing due to the income. Thanks for the input and the link, all very helpful in making these difficult decisions
  2. now looking a little further afield, ive seen a house in new norfolk, its by the river and look beautiful, anyone have any thoughts on living in that area?
  3. Thanks for all the replies everyone. This gives us a better idea of what to expect
  4. I'm not sure if this is in the right place but can anyone shed any light on the health care system in australia, Ive been told my my agent that becuase im british i will qualify for the Aussie version of the NHS but what does this cover Any input welcome Rik
  5. yeah, i had noticed that the wife isn't keen on going as far out as Blackmans bay as we will most likley just have 1 car until we know what we can and can't afford. Lindisfarne and surroundings are favorite at the moment
  6. Fleetwood, Near Blackpool. Not too far from Bolton pommysheila. Moving to Tassie
  7. Well they were lifted from elsewhere from a few people's opinions, of course local knowledge is always useful. If you or anyone would like to add comments to or reclassify any on the list please feel free, like I say local knowledge is a valuable resource to those of us moving over there
  8. Sandy Bay caught my eye early on, the commute from blackmail Bay all depends on the outlet I work at, which is uncertain until the employer knows when I'm going to arrive. I used to commute between 30mins to an hour back when I had a proper job over here. Lol. Thanks ks for the local knowledge, it is apriciaated perhaps more than you realise
  9. My wife and I will be heading to Hobart in a few months when our visa has been sorted. I'd love to hear from anyone in the Blackpool area (or nearby) thats been or lived there. Also anyone living there now, give me a shout if you fancy meeting up when we arrive so,me time in may/ june (depending on the visa)
  10. We are moving to taz as soon as our visa is sorted, probably may-ish. ive been doing some research like yourself. I contacted Pickfords for moving our stuff, bearing in mind we only have personal possessions to bring, nothing big. i can see if i can copy what it was going to cost to ship over 3 tea chests. i also have a list of good / bad/ indifferent areas around Taz, taken from another forum, however it is a bit old and probably out of date, i've posted on my thread asking for opinions too. 11. Well, I've had the job offer, which has been accepted and the 457 visa is now in the early stages of being collated before being sent off. Exciting times indeed. Thanks for all the input, i've been doing a lot of research on good/ bad and indifferent areas around Hobart but seems there isn't too much by the way of current opinion, i know places change from year to year so what was considered bad in say 2010 could now be a decent place. Any advice on good areas or areas to avoid for our search, the more info the better. I've seen a couple of decent places to rent in lindisfarne and blackmans bay, as well as sandy bay (which has had both a good and bad opinion)
  12. I think the other thing working against me could be the fact that although I have 20 years experience, I have been out of the trade for 8 years. I didn't do very well academically either. I don't know much about how to go about migrant visas, cost or what's involved. Seems a bit of a minefield.
  13. Not at all, I'm looking to spend 2 years then apply for a PR visa. The employers I've been put on to so far have agreed to assist with the process. Maybe I need to look into other avenues
  14. It is something I considered but I was told that my age would go against me, and then there is the cost of it as I believe it is very expensive and 2 of us to pay for
  15. Thanks for all the input people, the job has been put on hold in Geralton unfortunately as i was really liking the idea of moving there, reasons out of my and the garages control so the job search goes on. Hi Danielle, small world isn't it
  16. good question Snifter, We don't go in for the big nightlife thing, and arn't really compulsive shoppers, we like countryside, seaside and the odd days out. we like to eat out now and then and and long as there is a decent pub nearby that will do us. Warmer more predictable weather is something that would be an advantage, the Lancashire coast isnt exactly forgiving especially at this time of year. The pay is after tax, im guessing almost half of that would be going on rent, i haven't had a good look at real estate yet but its a lot cheaper than say Sydneys suburbs, but the pay is more over there (swings and roundabouts i suppose) Cost of living is what i expected to be, maybe a little less. Hobart would probably be one of the best places for us to acclimatize too due to it not being a big temperature difference
  17. Thanks very much for the replies , Exactly the kind of information i was looking for Skani and srh82 I will no doubt be back with more questions or updates on how things are progressing :xmas16: Merry Christmas to you all
  18. I have a possible opportunity to move to Hobart to work. I have to admit it wasnt somewhere i considered to start off. Can someone on here tell me the pro's and Cons of moving there? Places to live and places to avoid, i'll be on a mechanics wage of just less than $1000 a week but my soon to be wife will be working as a housekeeper for BUPA to top up the wage Any input welcome Rik & Niki
  19. My thoughts exactly, it cant be all bad. going in with an open mind and not comparing to anywhere as i am fully aware Australia is completely different to the uk, or i hope it is otherwise why would i want to move there haha
  20. Did a search and it only came up with 1 not very informative post
  21. Well after a bit more research, Geraldton seems about the same size as where i live now but it also seems to be constantly expanding. also the temperatures for the area on google dont seem to relate to anything ive got back from people living there, about 10 degrees hotter than the internet says is average. not a biggie but means i'll look for a house with A/C. found a few areas to avoid living in and a few that do appear decent places, the research will continue in case this job develops
  22. My friends live in Kinross so yeah in the northern suburbs of Perth. Still trying to do research but not really getting much feedback about areas, where to avoid or where is good, I was looking earlier at areas north of the city at rentals and the majority look really good but you can't always tell what am area is like by the quality of house.
  23. At the moment its a case of where they can find me work, i asked the recruiter for perth but he has told me there are very limited options there at the moment for new visa applications. Knowing places to avoid would be good, its always hard to know how good/ bad places are until you've lived there. Thanks for the input, any and all advice is welcome, it all helps make up my mind as all i have right now is the internet to help make a decision. my friends in perth have visited a few times so their feedback has been quite positive but they dont live there so its a different perspective. Perth to geraldton Aprox 4hr27 mins by car according to google maps. and only an hours flight.
  24. Anyone here living in geraldton that can let us know what its like moving there from the uk. how easy a transition it is, there is just the 2 of us so no family in tow Any info would be of great use Thanks rik
