Hi,
I'm a 187 visa holder for 10 months. I've been stood down for 3 months now, currently on jobseeker. But I want to look for another job. Am I free to go? Will it affect my visa? Thanks
-
I'm in the same boat as you. Just curious, will you go back to work if they call you? Or you prefer looking for a new job?Hi. I'm not 100% sure and even my agent doesn't have a clear answer for this but he reassured me that it won't affect my 187 visa because this situation is out of our control. And from Centrelink, as far as I know if you can prove to them that you are currently still employed and only being temporarily stood down and will soon be return to your full time job then they will waive any job plans, interviews and mutual obligations for jobseekers during this time. If you can provide a letter from your employer, it will be helpful and maybe show them the conditions attached to your visa as well.Hope this helps !! [emoji4] -

My hubby prefers North Lakes, me prefer same money spent for a bigger house and land. We don't use public transport at all...Greenbank is lovely although there are lots of estates popping up nearby. The building around this area of Brisbane is off the radar at the minute and since the COVID lockdown land is selling fast. I think the OP fancied more Gold Coast way which would be an hours or so drive from Greenbank.Cal x
Any other nice suburbs would you recommand?

How about south Brisbane such like Greenbank area? My concern is low crime rate, good schools, and jobs. Thanks

Hi Raul,It's not only a matter of whether you as an employye qualifies, but also whetaher your employer's business qualifies.
Evene if you all qualify the emplyer is under no obligation to apply.
Many emplyers have found the system too difficult and in some cases expensive and have chosen not to apply.
If a 187 visa holder has been stood down without pay, can he leave his employer and move to non-regional big cities? Will he get into trouble? -
Hi Raspuss,Hey Guys,
Just want to update I just saw that I got approval on April 9th?
Hopefully I will get approval letter soon.
Had given test and passed on March 23rd.
Can you share your timeline please? Thanks -
Are there much jobs going on in central coast region? The beach is what makes it problematic, because as soon as you're close to the beach, house prices and rental prices skyrocket. Sydney's demographic centre (i.e. where most people live) is actually Parramatta, way out west, for that reason.
As you're coming from London, ordinarily I wouldn't expect Sydney prices to be a problem for you, but cutting down to one income changes the goalposts. It really depends on your tolerance for commuting. Again, if you're from London then maybe the Central Coast commute won't seem as daunting to you as it does to the average Australian. If I needed to drive to work (e.g. because I needed the car for my job) there is no way I would do it. My boss lived on the Central Coast for seven years and had several accidents and countless near misses - too many huge trucks on the road.
However there is a train and if you don't mind the train commute then the Central Coast would be a lot more affordable. You have to be careful as there are some dodgy areas and some nice ones - also check the distance from the station. Check out Homely for some idea:
https://www.homely.com.au/find-places
The Central Coast will obviously be a lot quieter than the Northern Beaches.
Newcastle really is a nice place, and perhaps you could have a couple of days up there in your first few weeks to check it out, before you commit to a Sydney rental. It's like most cities, you need to know where the nice areas are - it's possible to drive along the main roads and miss everything!

The post below is old - 13 years ago - but it still gives you an idea, and Newcastle has improved further since then:

I have worked for the company for 2 years, but once the PR was granted only 8 months (i have not completed 2 years) . Will my PR be cancelled ? Just want some reassurance at this difficult time, when we are all down mentally. Thanks
And will we be eligible for centrelink benefits?? -
If the restaurant sponsored me had to let me go due to finacial hardship caused by COVID-19 while I am on 187 visa( i hasnt compelete two years.)
Will it affect my visa or my further citizenship application?

Is that employer's liability to pay for the days he missed due to his injury? To be honest, personally, I wouldn’t claim. It is a lot of paperwork, upset and hassle and would probably cause your husband to lose his job.
‘How long has he worked for the company?
‘How long will it be before he can work again? -

Hi pom queen,How long have you worked there?
You can apply for work cover as a casual you need to get your GP/Specialist to complete a form similar to the one below (this is for Qld) https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/77119/form-132m-work-capacity-certificate-workers-compensation.pdf
I am not sure which state you are in but these are the state specific sites you want.
Australian Capital Territory (ACT) — worksafe.act.gov.au
New South Wales (NSW) — workcover.nsw.gov.au
Northern Territory (NT) — worksafe.nt.gov.au
Queensland (QLD) — workcoverqld.com.au
South Australia (SA) —workcover.com
Tasmania (TAS) — workcover.tas.gov.au
Victoria (VIC) — worksafe.vic.gov.au
Western Australia (WA) — workcover.wa.gov.au
In regards to rights/payments etc
They can average the amount of hours you have worked there, so if you have only been there a month you would a smaller payout than if you had worked there 12 months plus.
Here are the two categories of compensation payments:
Weekly payments — payment(s) to employee as compensation for loss of income resulting from the work-related injury/illness
Medical expenses —any medical/hospital cost that arises directly from the work-related injury/illness
Hope this helps.
A member of the forum had a work related accident, he had been with the company years. Work Cover have been absolute arseholes (excuse my French) with him, he has had 4 independent specialists (gov and private) tell him he needs surgery, yet work cover told him he didn’t.
‘We also had another member who had her wrist broke after a patient attacked her, she was a nurse, she was left with severe complications and again Work Cover made her jump through hoops.
Good luck and I hope you recover from your injury. I would definitely make sure that you make a record of it, even if you do decide not to claim at the moment.
Thanks for your info, very helpful.
We are in QLD.
I asked for my hubby, he was minor injured at work ( six stitches on his wrist and since been out of work for two weeks) today his boss phoned him only see if he would be back to work again. Not mention a word about the pay for these two weeks.
His employer is a sub contractor. I presume he is self-insured. Will my hubby be covered by his boss's insurance company or workcover is the only way to go? Thanks
