  1. Thanks for coming back to me Andrew. Please can I send you an email?
  2. Hi There Does anyone know of a good financial adviser in Melbourne? One who knows both UK and Australian financial markets/tax etc? I would be really grateful for any recommendations! I'm struggling to find one and desperately need advice regarding a UK mortgage etc..... Thanks S
  3. Thanks Ruth! The arrangement your son made with you sounds great. Unfortunately we don't have that option. If anyone has any experience with the mortgage process I would really appreciate hearing all of the steps you had to take etc, how you found the whole process etc. Thanks
  4. Hi, I am a British Expat living in Australia. I currently have savings sat in a UK bank account. The money is just sat there not doing anything! I am keen to investigate investment options, I know that we can't invest in an ISA as you have to be resident in UK. Are there any other options? I hate the fact that we are not making any interest! Thanks very much

  6. Thanks so much Keith! Yes when I was renting in England I had to pay the council tax. I have had money sat in my UK bank account for a while so would be difficult to get proof of where it came from, it is just from savings from income. I am particularly interested in the mortgage process, so if anyone could share their experiences then I would be so grateful. Thanks again Keith and good luck with the house.
  7. Hi I am currently looking at the possibility of purchasing property in the UK to let (as a British expat in Australia). Just wondering if anyone else has done this? I have spoken to the bank and there is a criteria which I meet (e.g minimum 25% deposit, minimum salary, minimum amount in savings etc etc). Were there lots more implications to this? How did you find the whole process of finding and setting up a buy to let mortgage, rates, letting it out with an agent etc. It would be great and really appreciated if you could share your experience, just currently weighing up the possibility. Thanks
  8. Thanks for much for your reply. Where did you find this information about super not being taxable by ATO? It would be really handy for me to have? Thanks
  9. Thanks so much for your reply. So if I read this correctly it means that if I move back to England one day (as a duel citizen) once I retire and withdraw my super I will have to submit an Australian tax return annually for this. Sorry I am not the sharpest of tools when it comes to Super/finance etc!!!
  10. Hi all It’s long way off until I retire but I’m curious about how Super works if I return to the UK and retire there. If you have retired and are withdrawing your super in the standard way, i.e. weekly, bi-weekly etc, do you get taxed heavily on doing this because you are not in Australia anymore? This information is difficult to find, I have even contacted my super company and they do not know this! So if anyone on this site has retired in UK and is withdrawing Super, please can you be so kind to let me know the tax/issues around this. I understand the issues surrounding withdrawing as a lump sum, all I want to know is the tax situation on withdrawing your super in UK the standard way (as you would a pension). Hope that makes sense! Thanks so much.
  11. Have any of you tried meet up? We have just been to one and met some great people. It was scary though because we had never done anything like that before! We live in Yarraville, we have made a few friends here through work, other friends etc. a piece of advice I received was to never turn down an invitation, even if you don't want to go, it is worth it for the opportunities of meeting new people that you might click with. It is so important to have a network of friends out here. It is hard being so far away from close friends/family but that's the sacrifice for living out here. I've pm'd you Tracey
  12. Yeah we're not a bad bunch really :-) Wow what a job your hubby had!

  14. Hi, moving to the other side of the world definitely has it's pros and cons! We've been here for a year now and I get homesick and have wobbles! It's difficult not having those friends that really know you, the ones that you have known forever. I completely understand what it is like. We are a 30 yr old couple who moved to Melbourne from Derby and we do love it here, but feel a bit lonely sometimes. Anyway, I really hope that things get better for you. I'm always up for a drink (preferably alcoholic!) and natter, so pm me if you fancy it ??
  15. As a 30 year old couple with no children I can really relate to your post. We came over here with no jobs or home (which was shocking to people at home). We have been in Melbourne for a year now (plus 5 months on a WHV back in 2012) and absolutely love it here. We much prefer the lifestyle over here and even though the weather can be very unpredictable it beats the UK! There is such a good vibe over here, very uplifting. I'm not going to lie though, it is hard being so far away from family and friends at times, but that's the sacrifice. It is difficult starting all over, making friends etc, but it's an exciting challenge. Overall, we are so glad that we took this opportunity, we would have definitely regretted not doing this. Anyway, good luck and all the best for your exciting future.
