Thanks for the responses. The existing PR visa expires in early 2016, but we probably won't be able to return until 2017, so obviously won't be travelling on the original visa. So is it appropriate to apply offshore for the RRV in late 2015/early 2016 or do we need to do something before we leave Australia?

We've been in Australia on our PR visa for a little over two years and we need to return to the UK for a while due to family issues. My question is, when do I need to apply for our residents return visa? Is it when we leave Australia or shortly before PR expires? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
