The real Boom towns, are the ones you haven't heard about, where you buy before they take off, and not after the horse has bolted. Gladstone was a boom town for many years but since most of the investment has moved from the construction to operational phases has slowed down. Moranbah in the Bowen Basin, once the jewel in the Crown of fastest growing towns in Oz, has probably seen the largest decline as well. There is no magic formula for getting rich quick, other than always buying the worst house in the best street. Saying that Toowoomba would be my short term bet, they are building a new by pass and a new airport, but get in early, wait for the peak in 2 to 3 years time and then get out, as the sheep mentality buyers follow on later.
