Hi Lavers, thanks for quarantine updates. Couple of q's on your experience...
Is the internet access at the hotel unlimited?
Were you able to take hand luggage on your flight?

What do new arrivals do for somewhere to live?
the first time we moved to Melbourne we lived my sister in law, that isn't an option this time and I know that it'll be difficult to get a rental without a job or a viewing.
was looking at airbnb but that's £2000pcm

I've found after 4 years here it doesn't really notice anymore. You forget how it tasted in the UK and after a while, eating the Aus stuff isn't a big deal.
I tend to buy Green and Blacks mostly as I like better quality chocolate over Cadbury and the like. Maltesers and things are fine. I just ate some Cadbury choc eggs and didn't pull a face.
Lindt Dark Chocolate and Chilli is the same in both countries

I was going to recommend Monty's on Montpellier, I proposed to my fiancee in there, but it's closed

I really hate the word Maroon (Ma roon) when they pronounce it over here it's Ma Rone

Never sure why people feel the need to criticise Australia after moving back to the UK, perhaps it's linked to feeling disappointed about the dream not working as hoped.
I tried living in Aus, it's a great place but living there wasn't for me, end off.
I will definitely be back to visit friends and my favourite Melbourne eateries on holidays though.

I know, crazy how much your heart can be split between two places!

We've been back in Leicestershire for a week.
It's been great to see friends, play hockey and have a decent pint of ale in a proper pub. I'm quite excited to be heading down to Suffolk this afternoon to see my family and watch the mighty ITFC.
I've also secured a good job and got an AIP for a mortgage big enough to buy a nice place in Barrow or Quorn.
But...
Good lord it's greyer than Melbourne in winter, the houses are tiny and ugly and that Leicestershire accent!
At the moment I can't help feeling that I've seriously dropped the ball and should have just come for a holiday, I hope I get over it soon else we may end up ping ponging after our wedding in April.

Thanks all.
Last day working in Melbourne today, I've successfully progressed from "WTF have I done" to "too late to change my mind now"...
-
All good. I can recommend Barrow upon Soar and surrounds. All on the up and not as cheap as they were!
Yeah, lived in Anstey before we moved to Melbourne.
Will be looking at Barrow, Rothley and Cossington.

I thought Sydney was awful, a pretty low quality of life for most, and Adelaide was dull.
Perth was dull, but Adelaide really takes the biscuit.
As a country boy, I find all cities and large towns to be quite grim.
We will be moving to one of the villages between Leicester and Loughborough.
-
That did not go so well.
The Heat are the unexpected trailblazers this year. Our family go and it is great fun though with our talisman Chris Lyn selected for Australia it will be uphill from here on I suspect.
Terrible performance and result for the renegades and it was a bit balmy in the Etihad with the roof closed.
Still a cracking night out though.
-
I would not live in Leicester. Period.
Me neither, the cities a bit grim.
The villages between Leicester and Loughborough are very nice though and that's where we're heading.
-
Thanks everyone.
I had a good chat with a few people back home on Skype and a job interview for a role back in Leicester, I'm feeling a lot more positive about the move but will still be a little sad to leave.
PS go Renegades this evening ??

Argos... Pay more for stuff you can't actually look at in store!
Try JB Hi-Fi for cheap electronics.

Tough choice...and agree with LKC. An hour on Skype just does not beat a weekend with family and friends or even a night out!
What are your reasons for moving back? Do you have a good job here, Melbourne?
Plenty of places close to the UK to fulfill your travel bug, much closer and much cheaper, greater choice.
I completely understand your reasoning for moving back, especially as I have gotten older and see the difference in age more in my friends and family as not so easy just to pop around for a weekend visit. Missing watching my nephews grow up.
Australia is certainly a wonderful place, but it is far far away from the rest of the world if that is where you come from.
I too going through my own dilemma, of relocating to Toronto, similar reasons as to yourself. Bonus part is so much closer to the UK as family getting older and much quicker to get back in case of an emergency.
Good luck with your move and I hope it works out for you.
I have a reasonably well paid job here in Melbourne but I bloody hate it!
-
Another 18 months before we can apply for citizenship.
-
Good luck with the move, if your having doubts just make sure you have a way of getting back should you wish to in the future. Do you have citizenship?
Cal x
Nope, we have PR so we've got a small window where we could return.
-
Flights booked, shipping organised and family told...
But, we've just come back from a week in cairns and now I'm worried that I've made a mistake.
I want to go home as I miss friends and family but good lord Australia is wonderful.

London
whitby
North York moors
Edinburgh
Highlands
Lake District
Cornwall
Arran
York
jurassic coast
Windsor
Thats just the ones that popped into my head in the fist seconds and of which each gets millions of visitors per year.
You missed Suffolk!

We live in Altona and it's brilliant, wouldn't go any further west though!
Altona is affordable, has decent road and rail links to the city and plenty of nice parks to take the kids.

Hi does anyone know if game consoles bought here in Australia (i.e PlayStation, Xbox) work on U.K. televisions??
Thanks

Yep, both regions are PAL.
Only issue is if you have a WII or something of similar age as modern tv's don't always have AV ports.

Nah, was a work colleague who has ping-ponged...

That's good news, I should be able to pack my iMac in it's flight bag and work from the hotel then!
