  1. Hi,

Can anyone advise please. I receive a UK pension from my previous employer, which is paid into my UK bank account. I will actually be using this to supplement my living costs here in Sydney.

Would I be better off having my previous employer pay it into my Australian bank or continue to have paid into my UK one and then drawing it out from there?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Martin

  2. I wonder why you need a certificate to serve coffee?I realise coffee making is abit of an art these days, but surely it doesn't warrant a certificate? So if you gain a certificate and get a job,is the boss just going to say "Well we won't actually give you any training, you have the certificate so just get on with it"lol You'd still have to be shown the ropes? How hard is it using a coffee machine? Not having a go,I am genuinely curious!

Because this is Australia, and there are rules. If you do not follow the rules you do not work.

  3. Now't to do with me but, Melbourne has a really vibrant home brew scene. They have their own association, sorry can't remember the name for it exactly, but it does contain the words 'micro, brewers and beer, in some kind of order. They have regular competitions, they may be able to advise on ingredients available.

    Anyway, good luck.

Yes I am paying NI but only £30 a week as opposed to the £300 a week I was paying in Australia. Plus because I have been out of the country and haven't earned 10k yet, I dont pay any tax.

Sounds like you just want a free ride.

  5. Saw your original post a few days ago, just about to reply to offer some comfort. No need all sorted, good luck with the big adventure, come on in the water is wonderful. Have a great time and take care, we're over in Sydney's northern beaches, so if that's any use give us a shout.

  6. Since the global financial crisis hit hard, the UK mortgage scene has changed. It is not now based on loan to value (LTV), it is based on affordability. Which takes into account your personal liabilities, credit cards, bank loans etc, as well as obviously your income. We are in the opposite situation, selling a home in the UK whilst trying to negotiate a mortgage here in Australia.

    I nice problem to have I feel:wink:.

    Good luck with your search.

  7. Hi Pom Queen,

Thank you for the reply and moral boosting message. I have been offered a very good position in Chatswood, start this Monday 13th October. Going back to UK for Xmas and the family are all coming over mid Jan, ready for my little girl starting school. Hopefully going to confirm a property rental tomorrow, if I can secure that it is all onwards and upwards as they say.

Admin stuff nearly all done, Tax file number, Medicare, Centre link.

It's been a difficult few weeks, and there were times when it would have been so much easier to go back, as I am here all alone, but if it was easy everyone would do it.

So, our new life is now starting to take shape, fingers crossed for the future.

Once again thanks for he support.

    Cheers,

    Martin

  8. Hi MaryRose,

Thanks for your reply, working in Chatswood, I know there are no train links to the northern beaches, but if there were the prices would be even higher. It'll take about 1 hour 15 to get to Chatswood in the morning on the bus(car will come later). A small price to pay for the lifestyle me thinks, it also good bus links into the city and Manly.

    Cheers,

    Martin

  9. Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction regarding superannuation funds?

I am 54 and receive a Fire Service pension from the UK. I have just taken up a new job in Chatswood NSW, and was wondering which would be the best fund to choose. I intend to stay working until I am at least 65 may be beyond.

So the question is essentially what is the best type fund to select in terms of my requirements. Not bothered about making contributions, I have read some excellent threads on here and been looking on the Govt website.

Do I choose a starter, builder etc? As it could possibly only be for another 10-15 years what is the best direction to go in?

I have been led to believe that I need to look for low fees, overall performance over 5 years or so.

    I would appreciate any thoughts/replies.

    Cheers,

    Martin

  10. MichaelIP, MARYROSE02,

Thank you for your input, we had initially hoping to be around the northern beaches area, Dee Why etc, unfortunately not a lot of availability within our budget. Heard some good things about Collaroy, Narrenbeen and Mona Vale, regarding schools and friendship groups. Any additional info would help.

    Thanks again.

  11. Hi,

Having recently arrived from UK. I am trying to ascertain the most suitable and affordable area to rent. I know everyone's needs are different, but basically with three young children aged 5, 4 & 1 today, close to schools and other amenities, transport links into town, bus or train, not too far from the beach all for around 750 per week.

    Is that asking too much?

I have been informed that Hornsby would be a good place start.

I am trying to canvas the opinion of others.

    Many thanks for reading.

  12. Hi all,

I am currently staying in Sydney( North Curl Curl), seeking employment. My partner and children aged 5,4 & 1 are still in the UK at the moment, which is hard for all of us. I am a retired Fire Officer 30 years experience, I am looking for a fire related job in the engineering/surveying areas.

We have 190 visas and am trying to increase my network options.

If I can secure a position the family will move out straight away, looking to live around the northern beaches area.

It would be good to catch up with someone for a chat also for some general advice regarding schools etc.

    Thanks for reading.

    Cheers,

    Martin
