  1. So weve just been to Perth and Freemantle for a week to do a recie around. Its lovely and a lot quieter over there...stayed in a beach shack at Coogee which I highly recommend.

Qatar airlines are amazing! So accomodating and professional

    No hiccups

Oz security was a smooth transit through Perth airport and transport was easy to the city

Visited the CBD, Freemantle, coogee, swan valley and the Perth Hills

All accessible by car with little heavy traffic

Swan valley is lovely although we were told by a local that you need megabucks to buy there after the mining boom has blown the prices up

I love the buzz of Freemantle - great artsy scene and a host of eateries. Cappuccinni strip run by all the Italians. The markets were fun to browse

But it seems so expensive to eat out now

    Ie..

    Coffee flat white $4

    Chai latte $5

    Cappuccino $4.5

Meal for 2 $60 at a greasy spoon

Bottle of house wine $15 (not bad)

Is this the same everywhere now?

We got talking to a guy at the service station who says he makes $30/hour in perth

    Think ill change my job

On the other hand, fuel was a lot cheaper (filled our 1.4 tank for $40)

Meat in the supermarket is cheaper and bigger cuts too

Nonetheless, people in WA were friendly and helpful.i got a tan!

    Then we came home.

    Via Heathrow.

    Shoot me in the head.

66million people live in the uk

    23ish million in oz?

Not sure what life holds for us now.....

  2. We live in rural victoria. Small town not far from property we run. Hate it to be honest everybody knowing your business nothing private even medical conditions become topic of discussion. We are fairly private people and find it hard to be the subject of town talk which i am since a recent serious diagnosis. People we really don't know asking how my treatment is going etc.

Aw no thats not nice! How is your treatment going anyway? (dont answer that). I guess its nice to know that people are there if you need then. In Guernsey, if someone had a baby or was just out of hospital, local people would rally around and bring food dishes to see them through the week.

  3. You could, in a way, have the best of both worlds, by moving to somewhere like Camden, NSW. I went there for a drive on Saturday arvo, and spent two or three hours walking around, looking at homes on quiet streets, with fields and the Nepean river all around. It has that country town 'vibe' with the showgrounds, livestock selling ring, and agricultural businesses, but it's also reasonable commuting distance from Sydney and Campbelltown., and has all the 'big city' facilities you need, apart from a railway station.

It's not a 'real' country town in the sense of being hundreds of miles into the bush, but on the other hand, although life in those towns can be pleasant, it's good to be close to the big city facilities.

thanks Maryrose02 - i will check it out. Also looking at Penrith or Wollongong or Newcastle regions as options

  4. Hi

i am in the same boat as you. i am a Psychiatric nurse and been looking since May...

Ahpra LOE is due to Expire march 2015 and am really stressed. Cant go to activate

nurse registration so if no job with sponsership will have to let it expire and then start

again for PR. Only if i has known. Oh am a diploma nurse just finished top up degree

and dont know if that is going to be egough for AHPRA.

hi there are agencies that will sponsor if you are that stuck

Mayday nursing (used to work for them - theyre good)

    Nursingaustralia

dont let your LOE slip - im making a trip all the way to perth to activate my rego as i cant face writing to all my past employers again for refs and letters and solicitor fees and all the gumf AHPRA ask for

  5. Hi - apologies if this has been covered already, but Im wondering if anyone has found a hospital employer that provides sponsorship recently?

The bulk of the jobs are looking for residents (rightly so too as I believe the auzzie graduates arent getting jobs) - theres no longer a shortage of nurses

I have 10 years experience in acute care and AHPRA reg - not sure where to start now though as I cant find any sponsorship vacancies. Have had emails back from employers saying theyre looking locally first.

Looking for posts in NSW or Adelaide

Have looked on Seek.com.au. Any other job sites for nurses?

    Anyone in the same boat?

  6. Thanks for this, great read! As a nurse, it's good to read nurses getting jobs and the cost of living not being too much of a shock! These are my main worries! Sounds like it's all going really smoothly, long may it continue for you and your little fella.

    Bouncy X

i just saw on RCN jobs website that WA Health are recuiting nurses from UK for Perth so they must be short over there

  7. And New Zealand too whilst your there...

i lived in Oz for 2 years. I wasn't into the backpacker scene but did do a camper trip Sydney to nimbin which was so much fun and lovely.

other memorable trips were Great Ocean Rd,Fraser Island, Tassie weekend trip! 6 weeks working in the 'outback'.......didn't go to to Alice springs which I regretted

most of all,I made lovely Sydney friends

and went on a lot of weekend trips to Sydney sites

    Enjoy xx

  8. I withdrew $100 from the ANZ in Crown St, Surry Hills, on Sat lunchtime, and I've got 5 bucks left on Monday morning. Where did it all go? And what makes it worse, is that I paid for a heap of stuff on my credit card as well, six pack of Coopers from the Royal Exhibition hotel on Sun evening $20.50, 3 bucks a schooner, compared to buying them over the bar for $6.20. I basically spent it on beer, coffee, and meals out, though I was shouting somone on Sat eve, but that was cancelled out by people buying me Sun lunch and providing food at Sun night BBQ.

Maybe 50 quid would have slipped through my fingers just as rapidly in England!?

yes it would have for sure

    £2.50 - £3.25 a pint , £5-6 for a 175ml glass of wine

A 2 course meal will set you back £25

you wont have much change left for a taxi home

  9. Hello,

I have a quotation which is very reasonable to fly my cat and dog on Thai Air. Does anyone have any thoughts on this route?

    Thanks in advance.

hi I would love to know how you got on here - did you fly with Thai airlines on the end? were also looking to ship 2 large dogs....headache

  10. I lived in country Victoria for a year. Hated it, but then I'm a townie which it sounds like you're not!

Yeah - Im not sure what I am anymore really - if I have to be labelled. so therefore were unsure where to live when we come to OZ.

Grew up in a large town - Trained in Edinburgh city - Lived in Sydney (loved it) - Lived in Melbourne (hated it) - lived in Guernsey which is a small island 7miles x 3 miles (best time of my life -still have lifelong friends from here - cant live in guernsey though due to workvisa)

Back in Edinburgh city now but on the edges so were a 10 min trip to the hills and beach which i cant live without.

  11. Have lived in several small towns in the NSW Central West (not close to Molong particularly, but only a couple of hours away).

Housing is dirt cheap by Australian standards, both for purchase and rental. Jobs, on the other hand, are thin. You need to follow the job first, and the town and housing will follow. Expect very ordinary internet, and higher local prices for groceries and petrol, etc. Public transport is generally not good, depending on the town.

The people? Again, depends on the town, but I've never much bought into the "country people are friendlier" thing. People are people. Country people are forced to talk to you more, but they can also be terrible gossips, and towns have petty little feuds and things. It's not all bad by any means, but just that it doesn't live up to some people's expectations. If you've never lived in a small town before and only have city experience, try to use a large workplace as a comparison. The same personality types will come up. Also, don't expect the place to be immune from petty crime - depending on the town.

Don't expect decent food, especially if you like anything remotely exotic. You can usually get a great steak at the pub (or strangely, at the ubiquitous Chinese restaurant run by fourth generation Aussie-Chinese, There's traditionally an "Australian Meals" section on the last page of the menu, and it's better than their Chinese stuff).

All that said, living in the bush can be great. My preference is to live in a small village within a fifteen or twenty minute drive of a major regional town of about at least 30 000. That way, you can kick back on a large block without hearing your neighbours, soaking in the Southern night sky, and all that sort of romantic stuff, yet half an hour later you can be in a cinema or (small-ish) department store.

i liked this answer so much that i tried to read it out to my hubby in a thick auzzie accent

  12. im jumping on this thread really late but since my return (and were heading back hopefully)...

    I MISS

-$2 sushi rolls from street vendors

    - yoghurt tubs with museli stuff in it from street vendors

    -eating out for brekky

-able to wear nice dresses and hairstyles because its hot and your not likely going to get drenched

-a public holiday day like every 2 weeks???

    -nursing in OZ

-auzzie tv commercials with their tongue-in-cheek humour

    DONT MISS

-the feeling of having no freedom on a working visa - couldnt do college courses or move away without it being a drama

-poor quality cheap end clothes / really expensive clothes - no in-between-range like here in the UK

-those scary Ibis birds that walk the parks and can poke a childs eye out

-auzzie men who are obnoxious and players (im married to a pom now anyway)

    -apartment living

its what you make of it...

    -hot christmases

  13. On the downside, whether it was something in the water,I don't know,but.....a few of a "happily married men"living in our town were having affairs!Seemed abit weird going to a function in town, seeing these men with their wives, when us in "the know"knew what was really going down!(Their trousers probably!lol lol)

Thanks for your reply - I liked this bit PMSL... i used to live in Guernsey (channel islands) island of 7miles x 3miles and quite a bit of people were divorced and remarried to each others husbands. It happens everywhere though unfortunately - cities, towns, churches and villages - i guess it is just magnified in smaller towns when people are paying attention. I wouldnt want to speculate why it happens - i guess people just dont know how to stay happy :)

  14. Hi, I'm looking to hear people's experiences of living outside the major cities.

I have previously been sent as a nurse to a tiny NSW town called Molong for 6 weeks and loved it and had such a sense of community

Can you tell me about life in the small town you live (in any state)?

whats the job market like? what is your house like? what do you do for fun? How accessible is it to the next major city?

Were emigrating back next year and i cant face living in a big bustling city again - we now have 2 dogs too which makes it impracticable -

    thanks

  15. Hi

Is anyone on here involved in community nursing in Sydney area (or any area).

We are moving over there in 2nd quarter of 2015, and want to know as much as possible about this.

    Any info/links massively appreciated

    @robley

    Cheers

    Matthew

hi - Ive been a nurse in sydney and a community nurse in kent - Are you hoping to do community nursing in Sydney city area? good on ya but it will be a nightmare for travel i would imagine! wouldnt you prefer to be a nurse in a lovely peaceful northern suburb or northern beachy area - that would be my ideal of a great job :)

  16. Your fly for less at off peak times and longer stopovers . I think the op has kids so you need to multiply 1500 by ???like I said if your skint your not going anywhere

looking at flights today and see that Malaysian airlines have cheapo flights :D ...mind you - they've had a bit of a bad year eh

  17. You said yourself,if you have to look for reasons to stay in the UK,then its time for a change?Onwards and upwards???Go for it!

ah - yes i said that because someone earlier on this thread suggested i was "just looking for reasons to stay in the UK". no futher questions. thanks for all your answers

  18. OP,not sure why you asked the question then if you're 100% sure you're going? If you have to ask,an you actually afford to go?Just a thought!

where did i say i was 100% sure were going? i asked about the recent rise in prices in Oz - to which my question was answered so we can make a more informed decision

  19. Thanks for all your advice - yes it is the rise in housing prices and outlays for bills I am concerned about - but I guess anywhere in the world can be as expensive or as cheap as you make it to be by living within your means and being frugal (my word of the day)

Living in a cheap area of Kent sets ups back over £1000 / month

As for "looking for reasons to stay in UK" - surely if one has to look for reasons to stay in a place then its time for a change :) onwards and upwards...

  20. Hi guys! now have my nurses reg for OZ (or more like it will be official if i present to them before december)

But now were huffin and hawing about the UK and talking about just staying here as its awfully expensive in OZ i have heard??

I lived in Melbourne in 2006-08 as a nurse and remember eating out a lot and must have had a lot of money - have the prices shot up? is the cost of living extortionate now?

    any advice appreciated
