  1. PE jobs are incredibly difficult to come by. There are very few permanent jobs and there's a queue of casuals waiting to take the jobs.

You could come over work as a casual and hope something opens up. I worked as a casual (history) teacher and ended up getting a permanent job. Lucky that there was an opening.

I arrived in Sydney on Xmas Day. I was lucky as I arrived on my girlfriend's 457 visa, her company paid for agents and visa fees. I've gained provisional accreditation to teach in NSW and I am awaiting accreditation from the CEO (Catholic Education Office), I applied 1st week of Jan and I'm still waiting.

I haven't got much teaching experience (2 years as a Secondary History/RE teacher, 1 year as Coordinator of PSHE), so on paper not a bad CV for my first 2 years.

I've applied for 15 job and nothing. I received a handwritten letter from a Principal which said something along the lines of, "Very impressive CV, you've put a lot off effort in but we don't want to take your application any further"

I've been in contact with SMART Teachers, I'm registered but they said I've arrived at the wrong time of year and that supply/cover will pick up in term 2.

In a nutshell, the feeling I'm getting is there are too many teachers and not enough jobs(In the majority of subject areas). A bit of a sweeping statement, I know. There does seem to be more maths/science jobs.

Luckily my gf is "keeping me", I am going to continue applying but eventually I'll have to get a job (ANYTHING!) because I'll go crazy

Good Luck to you all (you may need it)

Wow, I just found this old post.

How times have changed. I've now got a permanent job at a great school.

  3. Hi all,

I'm a Humanities teacher originally from the UK, an Australian permanent resident living in Sydney wanting to move to Perth or surrounding area.

I've been teaching in two academically selective, state schools in Sydney over the past 3 years and have 2 years experience teaching in the UK. I love Sydney, however the price of property is just ridiculous! My OH and I are on the verge of having a deposit and starting a family, and have come to the conclusion that we want a garden and beach lifestyle, this is impossible in Sydney unless you have $1,500,000. Anyway, I lived in Perth about 8 years ago, I have family and friends there and feel this is the place to start my family.

I'm in the process of registering to teach with the WA education department. I know Humanities jobs are hard to come by, especially by merit selection as there are tonnes of applicants for each position. I would love to stay in the public system, however I am open to going into the private sector if it enables me to move to Perth.

Has anyone transferred from NSW to WA? Or have heard of anyone who has secured a job in WA whilst working in NSW?

I'm not under any illusions, I know this will be difficult to achieve but it's worth a try!

    Thanks in advance.

  4. Hi all

I moved to Sydney 3 years ago with my partner. We both have permanent jobs which we love and are ready to buy a property, however we're just disillusioned with the cost of property here in Sydney. For the same price of a 1 bed apartment here, you can buy a 3 bed house in Fremantle, WA. We're seriously considering moving out west, a place we've spent a lot of time.

The question is, have any teachers gained a permanent job whilst applying outside of the WA. I'd love to stay in public education, however I am open to going private.

    Thanks in advance...

  6. Hi all

I have just arrived in Sydney on my partner's 457 visa. She arrived in September and signed up to a 1 year lease in an expensive box of an apartment in the centre of Sydney.

We are prepared to stay until September 2014 but would like to move into the southern suburbs sooner rather than later.

We have looked into the possibility of sub-letting to someone else but are aware of risks...

Has anyone got any experience in breaking a lease?

    Thanks,

    Mike

  7. Hi all

I have just arrived in Sydney on my partner's 457 visa. She arrived in September and was talked into signing up to a 2 YEAR contract for Telstra 4G mobile broadband for $50 per month.

My partner is a technophobe and didn't realise what she was signing up for. (I know Telstra will not accept this as an excuse to cancel)

Has anyone had any experience cancelling a contract of this kind or converted from 4g to wired broadband connection?

    thanks,

    Mike
