  1. I would say to anyone thinking Australia is a "better" life for their children, ask yourselves what it is that you think is better, lifestyle, careers. People have very successful and happy lives in the UK and being separated from family and growing up without that cannot be replaced and I wouldn't underestimate the effect it can have, I speak from experience.

  2. Depends on your definition of quiet, but there is always noise when you live near other people I think, be it dogs or children or parties etc. I think people could just be more considerate than they are, they don't seem to care how much noise they make in their house bounds.

  3. Not to be rude but I think you may find it hard to get sponsored with those skills, your partner may have more luck but it is very dependant on where you wish to live and the work available and other tilers will tell you work is up and down. It may be best to work out how much money it would cost to live where you wish to go then work out what the work is like in that state / city. Cheaper than flying out here and ending up with no work which does happen to many!

  4. I hope it all works out for you. Sounds like you're another victim of Sydney which is insanely expensive. Unless you are earning big money I would say to people avoid Sydney.

I wouldn't say avoid Sydney cause that's abit misguided, everyone just needs to be aware of their individual situation because not all states are the same and costs vary. When deciding where to live it is important to ascertain what money you would need to survive in that state / city.

  5. I'm sure if the same thing happened in Aus Jen, that a similar sentence would be handed down. Don't think the courts here are any less harsh than the UK.

I wouldn't count on it, there have been many crimes in this country lately with punishments / sentences that do not fit i.e Jill Meagher, Simon Gittany, Cowardly one punchers, murder is murder and life is life not 25 years. It may be in a modern jail but freedom is taken away and that is important to everyone.

  6. I have heard this too from many banks, they won't lend unless you have been a resident for a minimum of 3 years. Doesn't matter how long you have been employed, that is what I have been told my multiple banks in the UK. I would rather rent and buy when I can personally, its not a big deal to wait abit.

  7. I was glad to hear this morning that the UK courts have sentenced the killers of the Woolwich Soldier, Lee Rigby to life sentences (45 years).

Well done to the UK for handing down a sentence which reflects the crime, it does not bring him back but sets a precedence and hopefully the family can take something from it.

Now Australia should follow and introduce harsher penalties.

  8. There are good and bad aspects to both countries that cannot be denied, you just must accept them for wherever you decide to live and make the best of it. If your family is that important to you then the other sacrifices can be made at least you have a "worst case scenario" view at the moment so you are forewarned. Bear in mind the UK is on the up and the winter is at its worst for a short time of year. Maybe somewhere else in the UK would be a better fresh start.

  9. I'd take the job every day of the week, you can always get citizenship if you really want to come back but you mentioned you wanted to settle down and be near family so maybe you need to decide what it really is that you want.

  10. Obviously if you want hotter weather other states are more suitable, but there is always a humidity tradeoff (except WA perhaps).

Not anymore, WA is becoming more humid than it ever used to be! It was always dry heat and mostly is but there is certainly more humid days now. Totally unpleasant to do anything, as is the dry heat.

  11. Chill out, it's just an online forum.

London has become a dump. Overrun by thugs from the non-desirable parts of Eastern Europe.

I live in St Johns Wood which is rather nice but even this part of London is suffering from the influx of Euro Trash and is not what it used.

Transport is rammed, expensive, dirty, doesn't matter where in London you are.

That's pretty much every city, its not unique to London.

  12. Thanks Jen85...yes it will and does take a bit of adjustment..and we`re all different in that aspect..i did a year sabbatical over there a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it even tho we went thru a very cold winter...so good luck to your mum...all the best.

Thanks Cheswick! I love the cold weather nothing better than a nice crisp walk in the morning, best way to start your day!

  13. Sounds like you have pretty much already made the decision, you said you don't want to be in Sydney so I would just leave! There's not point in staying somewhere you are unhappy as it will affect your whole life.

People buy homes in the UK so I wouldn't worry about that too much, depending on what you do for a living as long as you earn enough to be happy then it doesn't matter, everyone is so obsessed with having a big house, lots of "stuff" and holidays every 3 months these days especially in Sydney, I know I lived there for 4 years in two separate stints.

Just go with your gut and good luck! I'm an aussie like you too and hanging to board the plane next month :)

  14. Sorry you had to have such a horrible experience, but unfortunately its a city and an ugly side of it but all cities are the same. Melbourne is no different to idiots roaming the streets in Sydney or New York or London I'm sure.

  15. You have to visit first because everyone will just give you THEIR opinion, facts are yes kids start fires but you will find that in other states too, there are times when Perth is dead quiet at night yes all these things you must accept. Living somewhere is completely different from holidaying so don't come with the rose tinted glasses and look at everything logically. Good luck!
