  1. Unfortunately, the only buffer we will have is to fly home. If we've not managed to find any suitable work in 3 months then we'll look to come back as there is lots of work back in the UK at the moment for someone in my line of work. Obviously, this isn't what we want but that's all the cash we've got available for the move.
  2. Hi guys, Thanks very much for your responses, it seems that we should be ok then and it's put my mind at rest! The money I mentioned is what we will have in our bank when we arrive (flights and visas will be paid for before this). I don't think setup costs will be high as we're not intending on buying a car until we have work and we've got a friend to stay with (on a second point does anyone know how much room rents are in that area so we know what a suitable contribution would be - I'm thinking around $100-150/week). Have I overlooked any other setup costs? We're hoping to get about on public transport until we've got work and can afford a car - I've heard that the public transport is pretty good out there and we can avoid rush hour times to travel into the CBD to hand CVs around. Thanks again for your help!
  3. Hi guys, I've had a bit of a search on this site to find some info but it seems that everyone's scenario is a bit different to mine... I'm moving out to Perth in August this year and am saving up the cash as we speak to do it. I reckon I'll have about $14,000-15,0000 when I arrive with my girlfriend. We've very fortunately managed to find a friend of the family who is going to let us stay in her spare room down in Byford, at the base of "The Hills" (we'll have to pay some contribution but I'm not too sure how much yet). Ideally, we'll both find jobs fairly quickly (fingers crossed!) - I'm a Subsea Oil and Gas Engineer and my girlfriend works in medical admin. I'm hoping we'll find something within the first two months. My question is, do you think we'll manage to keep ourselves going for a couple of months on $14-15k? We're quite happy to live cheaply until we find work but we'll obviously want to do some things and see the sights. Thanks for your help! Tom
  4. Good Afternoon, I'm currently a Subsea Project / Design Engineer working for a subsea controls company in the UK. I've got a degree in Mechanical Engineering and experience of design, manufacture and test of subsea equipment such as UTAs, SDUs, SEMs, Stabplates, etc. and also have offshore installation experience. I was hoping someone could shed some light on the best way to go about finding work either from the UK or when I get out there. Is there still work going for someone in my position? Will the job search be easier when I arrive as companies will not have to fund my relocation and can meet with me face to face? I've also heard that it is much easier to find a position if you can get a foot in the door in the form of a contact, so if anyone knows someone that I could send a CV to or generally get in touch with it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help! Tom
