  1. Don't pay too much attention to comments like this. There is no such thing as an 'IT Market' - it's hundreds of different occupations and it all depends on how many of those occuptions would line up with your skills and experience. The size of *your* IT market in Australia depends on that.

To the OP: When we look at IT candidates (we're an IT firm) coming from Seek, a very very significant number (a majority) of the are not in Australia, and the vetting process throws them all out. The reason for this is that first working out working eligability for hundreds of applicants is too laborious, and on top of that the logistics (and differing levels of commitments) from overseas candidates makes them a bad bet. Agree with about that shouting PERMANENT RESIDENT might help.

What I can tell you is the following:

    1. Melbourne and Sydney as a whole are better bets for IT occupations overall

    2. If you are well skilled and experienced in a relevent occupation, you will find work in either mel or syd for sure.

    3. Either be prepared to wait, come to Australia without a job, or fake it somehow. One of those options :)

    Good luck.

thanks adaminoz, its my partner whos looking for IT work, hes 16yrs in the trade and all certs up to date, he does virtualisation atm so im guessing its a specialised job.. the only trouble with moving around will be moving my 8yr old from school to school which is defo not an option..moving overseas will be daunting enough for him, we had our hearts set on perth but realistically im thinking we need to re look at this, best get OH back pack packed and send him off travelling around oz :) thanks again!!

  2. Hello, my hubby is in IT and we recently moved from the uk to melbourne. Here is our experience with finding a job in oz. we applied for roles before we moved - we got hubby's cv rewritten for the oz market & a new covering letter written - this was invaluable. We would apply for roles then hubby would call that night (daytime in oz). Sometimes the recruiters would speak to him & offer guidance etc - sometimes not). Everyone said wait until you are actually in oz then contact us.

we carried on applying but only got 1 interview lined up before we went - one bit of advice put 'permanent resident' in bold at top of cv & covering letter. As soon as we booked our short term rental we put that address & an oz mobile on the cv as contact details.

then we arrived in oz! Over an 8 week period we must have applied for approx. 250 roles - each one with a specific covering letter. The interviews began to trickle in. Some jobs needed 3 to 4 interviews until job offer - some offered job then a company restructure happened & job was pulled. It was hard work - one day hubby had 6 interviews in one day!

But it paid off as like buses 2 job offers materialised at once - 9 weeks after arriving in oz he started in a senior IT role with a global company.

So my advice, re look at your cv - apply for lots of roles - phone recruiters & meet with them - accept it may be a few months in oz before you get a role. Sorry posting this on my phone hence why it's a bit bullet pointy!

THANKS ever so much CATSRUS!! GREAT ADVICE, i really appreciate the time you have taken to give me this insight :) thanks again

  5. Yeah I know what you mean. Rockingham is nice. I personally like North Perth and Northbridge. Understandable as I'm young and single. It's where everything happens!

Beaufort Street is a good place for bars and cafes. There's a pub called The Queens Tavern (you've probably seen your friends on Facebook there at least twice!) very popular place.

Kings Park & Matilda Bay are my two favourite locations in WA. Matilda Bay because it's so family friendly. There's BBQ's that anyone can use and the kids can safely swim in the water!

    How old is your son?

wooow sounds awesome :) especially the safe swim area, so paranoid of sharks lol, my son has just turned 8yrs so i hope he will love it, although alls he says atm is ''i love this cold weather mummy'' eeeeeeeeeeeek

  6. You'll love Perth. Have you been before Joanne? Feel free to message me about Perth :)

no i have never been, my partner knows a few people there (old colleagues etc) so we get regular updates on fb, i am sure i will love it, my son is my main worry but i am pretty sure he will be ok, he'l have to be !! lets face it, its mostly for him, thanks @PomCop i will be picking your brains very soon :) we think we may try and rent in rockingham? as we been told its still commutable to the city but far enough away to be ''away from the city'' if you know what i mean..

  7. thanks guys, omg i have no idea??? we think perth atm, we need to get job hunting, i ideally want to go in our school holidays for the 6 week break and then get my son into a school in mid year rather than take him xmas and have him start a new year aswell as a new school.. hes just turne 8 so im sure he will adapt ok. jobs the key! celebrate first tho eh :)

  8. My kids are half Chinese. My daughter, when about eight, when we lived in Sydney, told me that some kid had said "your father's a Ching Chong Chinaman". I asked her how she had replied. "Shut up, you black meatball". The other kid was from Fiji.

I always encouraged my kids to stand up to bullies. My daughter was a motormouth, and never had any trouble. In fact, when she left primary school and her brother was about to start there, she went around the school telling the other kids she would be back if anyone bullied her baby brother.

Her brother, while no motormouth, did karate and he never had any trouble either, even when we went to Japan when he was eleven. He told me not to worry, when he started at a Japanese middle school, was very small for his age, and was the only non Japanese in the school- because, he said, the Japanese kids didn't know how to fight. Of course, he needed to flatten at least one before everyone else got the message. I always told him never start a fight, but make sure you finish one.

On the other hand, we had a Jewish friend in Sydney whose son was quite timid. He was bullied a lot (not sure if it had anything to do with being Jewish, and he was "white") and his mother complained to the school a lot. All that did was to make it worse.

Bullies are cowards, and your kids will be bullied if they don't learn to stand up to them - either verbally or physically. Of course, schools do take it more seriously now, but bullied kids are often too frightened to tell their parents.

thats great that your kids can be like that :) i was a kid that punched boys in the face if they started on me, (very ashamed of this btw) but my son is nothing like me at all, hes very sensitive, i have tried so many times to help him, i have seen kids slap him around the face, pull his hair, kick punch him etc and i go steaming over and insist he hits them back! he just wont, hes very tall and broad for a 7 year old but it is just not in his nature to be like that, hes said to me ''i dont want to hit as its not nice'' can you imagine how frustrating this is :( altho saying this i took him to thailand last xmas...in a thai boxing bar he loved getting in the ring boxing russian boys older then him, didnt win but had a good go so i know he can handle himself for sure...he will be over 6ft like his father and very broad but if its not in him to fight its just not in him :(

  9. we are on a 189 (Still waiting for CO) my 7yr old is mixed race and is currently having a little trouble at school re his skin colour (kids saying his skin is brown and laughing) nothing we both cant handle atm but wanted to ask re this very very sensitive issue, i have no idea how to put this question out there in fear of offending someone, but i have to try and ask, so here goes .. has anyone experienced this kind of issue out in oz?

  10. He's still financially responsible for them so therefore as dependants they have to be on the visa. He should write a letter explaining this to his Ex. Hopefully she may write back with a refusal which you can then use. An Agent is the best to advise you on this. Perhaps negotiate maintenance payments from Australia to sweeten the pill.

thanks all, trouble is the x knows that she aint gonna get the huge whack she already gets for a few mths until my partner can find work and she will want to stick evey knife in possible...if hes not working he cant pay her :( that of course wont be forever, but thanks anyway, i think i will wait until we get our CO and see what they require us to do , it may have to go to court to force her to sign a declaration which is going to be very costly..but she likes running up tens of thousands of soli bills...for now i guess i will put a hold on our police checks and medicals as they run out after 12mths and this may take up half of this? been doing this for 2 years ..whats another one huh :(

  11. hi all, my partner has had to put on our visa application that he has 2 dependant children, although his kids wont see him and want nothing to do with him (obviously evil influences going on here but thats another story) anyhow, we have been told today that wehn we get a CO assigned in the (hopefully) nxt coming weeks that they may request there medicals and want to see there birth certs ... we dont want them on the visa and we have no way of getting there medicals done as they refuse to see there dad :( could prob get copies of birth certs? but we explained that the meds would of ran out by the time they are grown and may want to come over but aparently its proceedure..has anyone got around this? as this seems too ridiculous to stop us all from going :(
