  1. Hi guys When I arrive in Aus in a month or so, I'd really like to do some Station/Farm work to start with. Don't ask me why, I just have a 'bloke urge' to do this stuff. A lot of these jobs seem to ask for experience in various bits and pieces, which I of course don't have. There is a course (an expensive course) offered by TAW which is a week of taking customers through the various skilled/unskilled aspects of working a farm, but the real selling point is a guaranteed job on completion. My thoughts as a skeptic There may or may not be an industry that has developed to take stacks of cash from cry-baby gap year kids and their worrying parents with the promise of value in mentoring and 'guaranteed jobs'... when actually, station owners might prefer someone to show some initiative by just knocking on doors and grafting hard. My thoughts as a non-skeptic It might be useful to have a go in a tractor and be taught how to muster livestock etc, perhaps those skills are assumed when you apply for this work... perhaps station owners don't teach these things on the job anyway and the guaranteed work is useful because it may be harder to find work than I've been led to believe? Any thoughts on this matter?
  2. HI After a few years grinding away with sales jobs in the lovely Welsh climate (most recently in the motorcycle trade), I was brought to the realisation that I don't have any real reason to carry on; I have managed to save a few thousand quid, the only debt I have is a little bit of HP against my bike and a student loan. I have no kids, no serious relationship, so why not? I'll miss my friends of course, but there must be more fun to be had elsewhere in the world! I thought 'screw it', and rolled my sleeves up to apply for the WHV... tuns out it's no harder than registering an eBay account or something and got the email telling me the visa app was successful about 3 hours later. Bugger, now it's real, I'M DOING IT!! It's no longer just an out-there idea. My main decision now is to decide where to spend my first week or two looking for a job. I have one ex band mate from Wales living in Melbourne and another (same band) in Adelaide, both with Oz wives, so that could be a factor. I have really only set myself 2 rules when looking for work I shall not work with human poo and/or wee I shall not work in an office Pretty much anything else will be fair game. I do like the sound of Jackarooing initially to extend the visa though, especially if it involves a bit of bike Mustering. Is there a particularly good place to start if looking for that kind of thing? I want to meet lots of people but I'm truly not arsed about pursuing a party lifestyle with uni leavers. But anyway, after lurking this forum a little bit, it seems really friendly and helpful so I thought I'd take a minute to introduce! name's Hywel!
