  1. Im currently 17 moving into Oz in late October on a permanent visa, i was wondering on an estimation on how hour driving lesson costs in Brisbane area about. Is it worth getting started on my driving lessons in the UK just to get familiar with the road and so i can save spending more on the same lessons in Australia.

    Thanks

    Hi

We found a fabulous driving instructor for our 17 yr old on the Sunshine Coast, $50(per lesson) if you book 10 sessions. Can give you her number/business address if required.

Good Luck with your move BTW!

  2. I understand why the need for increasing the pension age, with the rising population age. I also wonder whether Australia has the baby boomer generation similar to the UK which is going to be a major problem over in the UK to the government.

I understand the argument that builders can not be expected to work till 70 however, usually they would have been in their trade for a long time and should really be taught how to prepare for their retirement so they can choose to take early retirement. It is also worth preparing for change in your career as you approach and age where you can no longer do your role. For example my dad was a window fitter but his health stopped him working to the standard he insisted on, therefore he branched into the management side of the company and developed skills there. Builders can teach and train apprentices, invest in a business employing others... Look at footballers and models, their careers don't last but the successful ones are the ones that build on their skills and change it continuously.

Most of us manage to have a few career changes throughout our lives too.

So how should a Builder be taught to prepare for their retirement?

  3. I was worried before I arrived in Melbourne as i had heard so many stories on here about how difficult it was to find a job in my field of HR. I prepared well before I left and joined AHRI (professional HR body) completed an e learning course on fair work act and set up agency appointments. It paid off! I had a good cv and positive attitude and treated job search as my job. I prob applied for over 20 positions had one interview where I was invited back to a second, had another interview set up in same week I got my job! I start Monday and I'm super excited, I've not even had to take a step back in position or salary as some had suggested I may have to do.

If you are making the move and you're in HR then good luck it can be done

Congratulations! Wishing you all the best for Monday!

  4. Hi

We arrived October 2013, our 16 yr old son completed his GCSE's in June. Whilst he has only spent 2/3 weeks in Y11 here before the end of the school year, the Headteacher does not envisage any problems with attending University once he leaves in Y12 and have sent off his Certificates to be assessed as they will count towards his OP.

I would IMHO make sure he has those GCSE's under his belt and then make the move, June is not so far away!

  5. Hi Beeps, your speedometer will need to read in km/h somewhere, even if it also reads in MPH elsewhere. Most modern UK cars usually have the ability to show both, in which case you don't need to do anything. If your car is older and only reads in MPH then I highly recommend getting the cluster changed to km/h in the UK before it leaves.

    Hi

    Many thanks for your reply.
