  1. We stayed in a double room in Nomads Pitt Street several years ago now. It was called 'the love shack' at the time. It was more expensive but was clean and convenient! It was a while ago but worth checking out

  2. Why would insurance be tax deductible.. of course it is not, no more than your car insurance is..

But the situation is not as dire as you would think. Firstly you accumulate sick leave, so as long as you are not using up your ten days with a day here and there it will soon add up in order to cover the more prolonged illness. Also superannuation is compulsory in Australia and this would normally have some sickness related insurance that will pay out an income to cover lost earnings in the case of extended illness.

Actually a lot of income protection premiums are tax deductible I received 30% of mine and my husbands premium back this year.

  3. Reading this has just made me feel a little bit better! I have been in Sydney for just over 3 months now and I have been struggling. My husband is desperately trying to be supportive but doesn't relaly know how to react when I get upset because I miss things or get angry at silly little things that are different to "home"! He is Australian and was in the UK for 8 years but alot of his friends are either still here or are people that have moved back that he met in the UK. These people are my friends too don't get me wrong but it not quite the same so I am feeling alone. We also living in Kellyville at the moment which is very different to coming from Epsom where we lived with pretty much everything on our doorstep!

I started a job that was a lot of travel (Kellyville to Cronulla each day about 4hrs in the car a day!) and that was really getting me down, however I have found another job and start that on Monday which is much closer and is a larger company (in hope that I will met some more people!) so I am feeling more positive following that!

It is reassuring to know other people are feeling similar and I am not going crazy! I feel like I am getting there but then it is like flicking a switch sometimes and all of a sudden I am upset again!

All ina ll at the moment I think we made the right decision and the plans we have for the short term and exciting.

Sorry that was pretty much just a waffle about me and not really any advice or anything!!

  4. After my email last week from my CO saying my grant was on it's way I have finally received the actually grant email!!! :jiggy: I guess around 8 and half months.

I got granted the 100 as well which is great. i really wasn't sure as although we have been together for the time the CO asked for more evidence of us being together at the early stages which was difficult as we were in a shared house etc with not much in our names!!

Super excited! Now a couple of weeks of proper organisation before we go without having to worry about visa!!

Congrats as well to everyone else granted recently!!!

  5. Working through various options for work when we move. One option is to potentially continue to work for my current employer for a period of time effectively from our new home in Melbourne. The question is really around the tax implications. If the company continued to pay me as normal as if i was in the UK, and i then take care of the money transfer on a monthly basis from the UK to Australia, what would the associated tax implications be? Would i pay tax on the salary in the UK, and then just transfer it across, receive the salary gross in the UK and then pay tax in Australia following transfer, pay tax in both countries (hopefully not!) or something else? I'm sure someone must have done this so just looking for some thoughts / advice please.

I unfortunately cannot help with your questions but I am keen to know the answers too. I have been offered the opportunity to do some consultancy and project work when we first arrive which would be great to tide me over whilst getting a new job.

  6. Don't know if things are moving quicker, it will be 8 months tomorrow since I applied, still waiting :(

I am at the 8 month mark as well so just waiting and hoping! They did seem to be moving a bit quicker just before Christmas as some people were getting granted around the 7 month mark but maybe Christmas slowed things down a little!

Well hopefully soon! I don't fly until 9th March so still have some time but it would be one thing less to worry about!

  7. You won't hear from the panel doctor or your CO re your medical. This is normal. Its all done online and doesn't go to you. Even if its referred its a 3 month timeframe in referred medicals so you won't get anywhere. So long as things are ok medically, even if referred for review your visa should be granted within the time frame you have been given. Only if there is something of concern medically that will affect your visa application will you hear anything. You may be asked to take tests again or provide more evidence then. Was there something of concern for you during your medical? Or an ongoing medical condition? If not, don't worry about it, just sit tight.

Thanks for your response, that is what I thought would be the case! No nothing medical to worry about just heard horror stories from other people that documents were either never received by CO or were overlooked and therefore thought a follow up to confirm would be sensible to put mind at rest! Otherwise yes just looking forward to the waiting as have a few more months to wait yet!!!

  8. Hello all, I undertook medical on 2nd September and as I have not heard anything from the docs I make the assumption all is ok and these have been passed straight on to High Commission. Did anyone receive a confirmation that these had been received? I am thinking about emailing SV to check everything has now been received including medical a but don't want to appear pestering! Any tips on how long I should leave it before checking this?

    Thanks

  9. Hi, I finally submitted my partner visa application to London office and have been assigned a CO (SV) additional information was requested for evidence of a long term relationship and apply for a permanent visa instead of temporary. Has this ever happened to anyone else, we have only been married a year but together for 5, is this a good sign? I assume it is??

I was also requested not to have my medical until after August is this normal to have to wait?

when I came home today I have had my birth certificate, our marriage certificate and copies of photos cards etc returned. I assume this means that our application has been read and assessed as it is? Did this happen to any one else?

I was hoping the stress would subside once I handed the application in but now I am feeling paranoid and confused!

    any advice welcomed!

    thank you
