  1. Hi my husband took is test in Blackburn college and he was there from 8am until 5pm. Good luck with your visa application.
  2. Hi Steve. The elective is one part of the new general electrician assessment. I had the same problem as you, didn't do much on DC emergency lighting etc. I did mine on maintained and non maintained emergency light systems, explained the difference in the two and the variations of application, where its used, and the best type for the environment. I can send you my elective to give you an idea. The first part of my elective is total rubish, so please ignore that part. Send me your mail addresss and i will send it to you. Regards Sam
  3. Just thought I would give some information about this as my husband done his this week in blackburn and there has been some changes. A guy from vettassess flew in from Melbourne to assist with implementing the updates to to the assessment so my husband felt the pressure and was nervous but the assessors are friendly and help you through it. what my husband understands the changes are the test paper is now 25 multiple choice questions instead of 18 and they insisted you showed your workings/formula for the question (don't worry to much as these are at the back of paper) bear in mind there are five sections and you can only have one Wong answer in each. you have to fill in one of four Elective forms that suits your experience and another form which you have to state recent work experience. My husband felt sorry for two of the other candidates as they didn't fill these in before hand and was asked to complete the forms before they could start, putting them under avoidable pressure. The questions that came up was resistance in series, parallel, vd across a resistor, total resistance, current and power, ohms law, capacitive reactance, inductive reactance, 3phase power calculations, transformer ratios, rms, and power factors. Disconnection and reconnection seems to be quite significant and stresses the importance of knowing this off by heart and always prove your tester every time used, before and after checking voltage. Make sure you know the maximum ohm reading for earth continuity and the lowest reading for a insulation resistance. The DOL starter section consist of drawing and labelling a star or delta winding then draw how it is wired. Draw a schematic drawing of the a the control side of the starter which had a start, stop, over load and a normally open contact. Then had to connect this on a pin board using plugs to prove what you have drawn will start, hold and stop the motor. The installation was just a two way lighting circuit, power radial, double set in conduit and a piece of copper tube to bond. This was quite straight forward but do proactive bending conduit as this caught my husband out as not done it for a long time. The measurements are crucial so make sure they are correct also label the ccu, my husband forgot to do this and is worrying that he may of failed this section. Good luck to anybody sitting the assessment and fingers crossed my husband will receive a pass!

    Hi

Hi, I'm new to this so bare with me. My husband and I have been thinking of moving to Aus for the last 3 years but not been sure until now. we are hoping to move to WA next year I can't wait!!!! We visited march 2012 for 3 weeks and loved it, but i know its different to a holiday. my husband is the one who will be getting the visa as he is an electrician and we are at the stage where he has to go for a practical exam by vetassess, so fingers cross he will do fine, if anyone has done this practical could you give me some tips to pass on to him. Many thanks
