  1. It is pretty pointless emailing them now. As they are not going to hold or reserve anything for you.

Rentals are snapped up pretty quickly, and you really need to view them first, put your application in, be accepted and then pay your bond. You will also need to show 100 points of ID when you hand in your application. To do all that you need to be in the country.

You won't need to blow money in a hotel. Try cheaper places like motels, backpacker hostels and caravan / on-site cabins in a caravan park. You could even camp cheaply whilst your stuff is in storage.

I am in Sydney, but to give you an example of a time frame:

Thursday morning I saw a rental online I liked, so I contacted the real estate agent and asked to view it the next day.

Friday morning at 9.00am I viewed the rental.

Friday afternoon I gave the real estate agent my application form and reference

Saturday morning I gave the real estate agent my proof of ID

Real estate agency closed on Sunday

Monday afternoon I got an email from the real estate agent saying my application had been accepted.

Tuesday morning I paid the months bond, two weeks rent in advance and picked up the keys

    Tuesday afternoon I moved in.

So the whole process from start to finish took six days.

Of course it may take you longer to find somewhere you like - that is the bit that takes the longest I reckon. Once the process starts with the real estate agent, it is normally pretty quick as long as you are organised in regards to submitting your required paperwork.

We've just had the exact same experience. We got to Canberra on 4th August and planned to stay with my sister and family for 4 months before looking for a rental. However, we felt so settled right away and I have secured a job so we decided last week to start looking. We saw a house we liked, swung by to do a recce, loved it. We went to the open viewing on Saturday morning, loved it more. Applied Monday at the estate agents directly with all documentation and ID required. Got accepted today (Wednesday) and are on our way to sign the lease papers and put down 4 weeks bond and 2 weeks rent upfront. So easy!

  2. Holy Crap! £50,000 was our combined uk income (pre tax) We came over with $27000 and it is more than enough for our needs (granted we are staying with family short term) we are trying to use as little of our cash as possible so we can have a house deposit within the next couple of years. You'll be fine.

  3. Does anyone know if its possible to watch the UK world cup warm ups in Australia? We missed the Ireland v Wales game yesterday and really dont want to miss the next game. I'm told we shouldnt stream anything here as its illegal, not that i have ever succesfully streamed anything here anyway. Any advice gratefully received, cheers.

  4. I haven't done a critical care course as yet but plan to do one here. I don't know how it works in Perth (different states have different classifications of nurses) Here in Canberra, there are level 1 Nurses (equivalent of A4C band 5) and level 2 Nurses (equivalent of A4C band 6. For a level 1 position you don't need the course but to advance as level 2 you do.

The whole process is very stressful, or it may just be that I found it stressful as I had many additional stressors leading up to leaving the UK. Desperately trying to get our house renovated ready for rental ( doing all the work ourselves, me as project manager). During that time my mother in law became critically ill and got admitted to my Old ITU (so had to try to fit In hospital visits etc) , then she passed away 4 days before we flew. It was hell. It's all done and dusted now though, and we hopefully have tenants moving in to our UK hours next week. Fingers crossed it's all finally coming together.

  5. I am looking to move to to Australia October/November next year (2016) and have read a lot of post where the AHPRA registration has taken up to a year...

So my question is should I wait a bit before starting my application or get going with it? My only bugbear is that if it comes through quickly then I've wasted a year's registration fee when I know I'm not even going to use it. Also got to send EOI and pay for visa (if/when!!) So I've not got loads of cash to play with!

what visa are you planning on applying for? If it's a visa 189, you'll need to pass IELTS and do a skills assessment first. Then I would suggest applying for your visa then apply for registration with AHPRA. From them receiving my application to my getting registration took 4 months. Hope this helps.

  6. Sadly yes. And pay about £150 for the pleasure. I know it's ridiculous, but you just have to suck it up and do it. There will be many more hoops for you to jump through too, but it'll all be worth it in the end.

  7. Thanks for reviving this thread! An update on my progress is that we arrived in Canberra on August 4th. On the 7th I had an interview at Canberra hospital for a registered Nurse job in ITU and thankfully I got the job! We are staying with my sister and her gorgeous family and are finally starting to settle down. We were very homesick initially. Having only really thought about the guilt of leaving my parents behind, it was quite a shock when I actually started to think about how I felt and just how much I miss them each and every day. It was never going to be easy. We had a tough time at the end. Desperately trying to finish our house ready for rental. The. My Mother in law became critically ill and was admitted to the ITU I had just left as a nurse. Sadly she passed away on the Wednesday, and we flew out on the Sunday missing her funeral. I don't know how we held it together, far too much stress to handle all at once. Things are getting easier now. We bought a second hand car to give us some independence. Once I start work and have an idea of what income I can expect each month we will start to look for rental houses. Anyway that's it from me for now. Will probably write a bit more in future. I hope everyone's plans at going swimmingly! Best of luck to you all!

  8. That is fantastic news pinkest lady congratulations working on application as we speak and driving me insane you may be sorry u said that lol just a few questions if you don't mind..... Feel free to ignore haha

    1) when you educational transcript do you just mean scores for each module as in percentages as I have them (fingers crossed)

    2) did your university of training have to send information direct to APHRA confirming accreditation along with NMC as doesn't ask on application but does on website? Already done this for anmac costing a fortune

    3) it's asks for information on course content on medicines management, pharmacokinetics etc which I don't have (also on website)

    4) my solicitor is a notary public u think this is sufficient??

Thankyou so much pinkest lady so glad your on this forum finally some sound advice....... Enjoy your couple of weeks as a lady of leisure, but I know what you mean Iam hoping to get work within a month cannot bear the thought of not nursing, what is your dream job by the way? xxxx

I'll do my best lol! Yes I meant the scores for each module but it has to come directly from The university of training. And that should cover the whole pharmacokinetics etc, as I didn't have to send anything extra for that. If your solicitor is a notary public that's fine, as long as he signs the copies as a notary not just solicitor and he has to use the exact wording specified. I'd be surprised if you didn't have to pay a fee for this.

The job I have got is an ITU nurse, but my dream job in the future is to work on the helicopters for retrievals and rural emergencies etc. x

  9. Thank you so much pinkest lady I totally agree visa 189 application was a breeze compared to this just one last question did you apply before ur visa was granted as still waiting on mine and it's ask for this document is it worth me applying without it ?? Again thank you sense at last aphra emails are not even helpful...have u found a job yet, hope I've settled in and good luck with u new adventure xxx

You're welcome Loulou. Yes I applied before my visa was granted, it's not a problem. When you get your eligibility to register email it will ask you to present yourself to an AHPRA office once you are in the country to confirm your ID. You're visa, once granted, will be electronically attached to your passport and AHPRA can access it that way and print it off themselves. I agree their emails are not helpful, but the people o dealt with at the AHPRA office were excellent. I had arranged an interview for my perfect job at canberra hospital for two days after I arrived and got the job! Was super chuffed, and it was a massive weight off my mind. I am just awaiting my police check (yes, another one!!) the two I have already had for visa and then AHPRA aren't good enough lol! I'm hoping to start at the beginning of September. I am desperate to get back to work, getting very twitchy about not having a routine. Best of luck to you and if I can help in anyway get in touch, I'll do my best. Xx

  10. Thanks pinkest lady aim hoping to getting a letter saying i can register before I move in April, perhaps this is positive thinking.....sending everything thing in next week apart from visa as still waiting, in regards to certifying is a police office or doctor ok any advice would be grateful as this application is stressing me out

I feel your pain. That should be totally doable, I sent mine in end of April, was received May 1st. I got my registration week before last. And got the 'eligible to register' email a couple of weeks before that. I was in the country by then so couldn't have timed it better if I'd tried. I found AHPRA to be the hardest thing to do out of everything including visa 189 application. With regards to certifying docs, a doctor or policeman won't do unless you're in Australia. It has to be a notary public or a justice of the peace (I paid £150 to get all mine certified). A solicitor won't do, it can only be an NP or JP. Frustrating I know, but eventually the hoops that you have to jump through do disappear and you soon forget them. Best of luck! Oh and make sure you get an academic transcript of education, which specifically states the scores you achieved. Not just a generic breakdown of modules the degree covered. that's what held my application up.

  11. Unfortunately you do have to do another check through fit2work. The changes can in in February this year. Total con and just a money making scheme. I've had hell with AHPRA but if it makes you feel any better when you get here they are a lot better. That's my experience anyway.

  12. I too am interested in this exact topic. Ours and my parents future plans are that my parents will come and stay with us for six months then spend the other six months in the UK on their canal boat. I read about a visa that allows visits of up to 12 months every 18months. Assuming that you have to have 18 months in between visits this would be problematic. Anyone know if there is a way my mum and dad can follow the sun all year round?

  13. I hope your move goes well! I am sure time will fly and the anxiety is natural.

As for men... I do think they are a dying breed! My husbands idea of helping out is to get his teeth done at the dentist!

Funny you should say that, I managed to get a break today by going to have injections to numb my entire face (and even my ears) and then have a couple of teeth drilled. Trying to find out which glue would be best for gluing down carpet gripper strips with a totally numb face, was interesting to say the least. I'm pretty sure the guy thought there was something very wrong with me. (And I might have spat on him by accident)

All in all, I'm ok thanks tiffanysamantha85. We fly to Canberra to stay with my sister for 4 months on the 2nd August and are about a week behind schedule on the house. (Well a month behind the original schedule, the one where hubby took voluntary redundancy and was going to spend his free 2 months doing the house up) instead he has become an expert on a racing car game he has on his iPad. So now the work really has to be done he is stressing and taking it all out on yours truly and my lovely parents who are so kindly putting us up. He shouts at me if I splash a bit if paint in the wrong place, but when he screwed through our newly tiled bathroom floor into an upstairs mains water pipe right above our newly plastered and painted living room, God forbid I should comment. Fun and games. It's a good job I love him isn't it?!

  14. Sorry....but I did laugh when reading this:laugh:. My OH moved out to Aus 6weeks before us, our move was very sudden !!

in that 6 weeks, I had to try and do everything, from shipping a move cube, renting out the house, basically packing up our UK lifes.

I did it.....but I don't know how. So stressful, you have my sympathy:yes: but don't doubt yourself, you will get there!!

i should have sent him out 6 weeks ago! It would have been Much easier to do it myself lol!

  15. Yep! We fly in less than three weeks and are still trying to finish doing the house up for rental!!! My husband has his head in the sand as to how long things will take and I have to tread very carefully all the time whilst trying to project manage a grown man who is acting like a teenager. He wants australia sooo badly but has done bugger all to help with the whole emigration process to get us there. Meanwhile, now that I've sorted the visas out, I am organising the money, the flights, the goodbye party's/visits, the house rental, the tax implications, the shipping, and trying to get a job out there to ease the financial worries tht I have despite knowing we have savings and a place to stay for free. And I've just had to book hubby Onto a speed awareness course 3 days before we depart. So yes I feel your nerves and stresses. I am going to need a lot of alcohol when we finally arrive in australia. Then its time to start the admin process over there for both of us. Give me strength and patience!

  16. @Pinkestlady thanks for your message! We have lots to do too and with three kids are planning to hopefully move by the end of the year. House to sell and job to quit or if possible take a career break just in case things don't work out. But to be honest once I go I don't want to return. Just need to get a job sorted in OZ now. Where are you planning to go? We are looking at either Sydney ( expensive I know) or Adelaide. Whichever comes up trumps first, I guess![/quote

itll be here before you know it! We are off to Canberra. To live with my sister and her beautiful family for a few months, then will stay around there for a few years to make up for lost time. I've applied for a job in Canberra ITU and in A&E, hoping to hear this week or next if I have an interview or not. Fingers crossed!! Although I am looking forward to having a couple of months off!! I'm Even going to get my nails done (once I'm no longer covered in paint!) as a nurse, I haven't been able to get my nails done in ages!! I can't wait!

  17. Massive congrats Macca10!! And everyone else who have had their grants. It's an amazing feeling isn't it? So much to do now though guys! It was my last shift on intensive care the day before yesterday, we fly on the 2nd of August and are currently desperately trying to get our house ready for rental as soon as possible so we can have as much family time as possible. My goodness it's stressful! All be worth it in the end!!

  18. @Pinkestlady I haven't been on for a while and just noticed your post, CONGRATULATIONS! You guys must be ecstatic!

We are Macca!! And also very nervous, it all just got very real! Lots to do now! Managed to get my last sportive for a while with my dad in yesterday 'the etape Eryri' was a great day with family, makes me really hold on to all my memories for this next few weeks.

  19. Yesterday my husband and I went for a celebratory meal with my lovely mum and dad. This morning I woke up and handed my notice in at work. When we went for our meal, I winged about every course tasting crap and I even didn't like the wine (this should have set alarm bells ringing). Today I have felt sick all day, nothing tastes right. Every time I look at my sweet pooch Alfie, who is going to live with our friends, I feel guilty. Then I look at my poor mum who is being absolutely devestated by our decision yet is being so brave and trying not to show how she is feeling. I know from experience it gets easier as we all went through the same thing with my sister over 7 years ago. It's not just the goodbyes, it's the guilt of doing this to your loved ones. I feel your pain. (On the plus side. Might lose a bit of weight before I go, given that I have no appetite. )

  20. I love where I work too. I work in ITU and work with an amazing team. I have never actually told my manager but I have made no secrets of our plans with everyone else and my manager is well aware of what I am up to by hearing through the grapevine. The thing is until I actually had that visa, I wasn't going to Oz, anything could have happened. Happily we got our visa on monday, and I handed my notice in today eeeeek!! Now crazy times to get the house ready to rent and we are off end of next month!

  21. Pinkestlady i have a question for you. Im new to this thread and i seen that you done your application yourself, i have used a emigration company amd have no patience watsoever. I am also a staff nurse

So my question is did you receive an email to say you had been granted your visa? I feel like i am being a pest to the girl who is dealing with my application but it is a stressful process.

Oh and congratulations on your visa!!!

Thank you! Yes I did receive an email with our visa grants. Totally unexpected as everyone was saying there were no visas left. To be fair my case officer did say she would review our case mid June and we never received a delay mail but I just assumed they had all gone and we would hear till 1st of July. I am ecstatic!!!

  22. Hi Marc! We are also moving to Canberra end of July. I'm an intensive care nurse and hubby a rugby development officer. Just to let you know I saw a couple of jobs advertised in Canberra for a dental nurse yesterday. I'll try to find them and send you the link.
