  1. also hostels are a good possible idea for somewhere to stay to start with then perhaps try and get a few sublets etc
  2. Hi My wife and I had an amazing 3 week holiday in Australia in December/January Obviously when there we got an idea of the costs involved in being in Australia but also appreciate the wages are high. We are considering going out to Australia for 6 months to experience more of it probably from early September and we will probably return at the end of February. I would like to know if people think the idea is feasible and would work financially? We would rent out our house in the UK. We are both university educated from the UK and I am self employed working in finance and my wife works as a Radiographer. We can both get the time off work without a problem. We would be visiting on a working holiday visa as we are both still eligible just at 30 years old. We would aim to live in one place and get work ASAP when we get there. When in Australia I would consider any work just to finance our 6 months and it would not necessarily need to be related to my current jobs in any way. I would happily do anything - I will stack shelves at night if they are paying 25$ !! Although my wife may be tempted to look for radiography work as it should be in demand and well paid ? ( i have just had a quick look and seen adverts for $41 per hour ) technically if taking a career break she is not supposed to do Radiography during her break. I am open to living anywhere (I probably preferred Melbourne to Sydney) but my wife ( and i ) really liked Coogee and the areas up to Bondi. We stayed in Maroubra when we were in Sydney. Also I guess for the time we plan to be there Sydney has a better climate. We would probably come over with a fund of say £5000 to finance the start and after that we need to fend for ourselves. I appreciate this area is expensive. Could we afford to live there perhaps renting a one bed apartment ? Cost per week for a basic 1 bed? I hear stories of 40 or 50 people going to view an apartment ??!! I want to be able to afford to have some sun and fun and be able to afford to visit other parts of Australia - Cairns / Uluru/ Melbourne / Adelaide / Tasmania etc etc (Jetstar/Tiger etc) on our weekends off etc. Would we qualify as Residents for Tax purposes ? At the moment we plan to come for just shy of 6 months , work , and stay in one location/city. This seems quite an important factor as the difference in tax is quite substantial (little tax vs 32.5%) Although I say we plan to return I would be willing to make it look like we plan to stay longer ( as i guess its always a possibility) and if it made it more likely one of us would get work or we could put ourselves in a better tax position etc. I have an uncle in Sydney and we made new friends in Sydney/Melbourne/Torquay when we holidayed but we also worry a little about meeting new people when we are there? Any help or comments would be much appreciated!! Thanks
  3. thanks for your reply. we have quite a few reasons for only doing 6 months mainly because of work/family issues etc in the UK. its basically come for 6 months or not at all i have been looking on websites and gumtree one idea i had was subletting from people going away for a month or two and maybe ending up in 3/4 different flats over the 6 months?
  4. Am I correct that we would need to be working for more than six months with one employer, and staying at the same address to be a resident for tax purposes ?

  6. Thanks Blossom i will look at the route of going down the 457 radiographer route with partner added to application
  7. thanks so much for your reply they have lived together for much longer and would be married when we travelled out. do you think it is easy for a Radiographer to get a 457 around the Geelong or Melbourne area? If we plan to go out around November when would be the best time to apply? For example if Mrs C got in contact with companies now would they not want her to come out sooner than Nov ?
  8. Hello, We are a group of four; Mrs A (28) and Mr B (28) - married couple Mrs C (28,Radiographer) and Mr D (32,works in IT)- engaged couple getting married in july Would like to go there for 12 months from the end of this year, around October/November. Obviously we can apply for the Working Holiday Visa but from what I have been able to research the most pressing issue is Mr D's Visa in respect to his age and to the processing times. In short it seems if Mr D could get a company to sponsor him for work on the temporary worker visa (457) the processing time can be 2 months? Other options on the the Skilled Migrant route are (sponsored or independent - visas 189/190/489/457/186/187 ) ? http://www.immi.gov.au/skills/skillselect/ Processing times are ; http://www.immi.gov.au/about/charters/client-services-charter/visas/8.0.htm 189 - 12 months 190 - 6 months 489 - 12 months 457 - 2 months (as mentioned above) 186 - 6 months 187 - 6 months The only visa which seems to offer a short processing time is the Temporary Work Visa (457) which offers a 2 month processing times. http://www.immi.gov.au/about/charters/client-services-charter/visas/3.0.htm These 457 Visas are becoming something of an election issue (general election in september). http://zeenews.india.com/business/news/international/gillard-defends-tightening-of-working-visa-norms_72133.html IT industry is the biggest abuser of the temporary visas !!! Any possibility it would be better for Mrs C to apply for the visa ?? with Mr D as her husband to be?? If Mrs C would get more points or if Radiographers are more successful at getting the 457 visa etc as a Medical Diagnostic Radiographer would be more in demand than our jobs. I suppose this was only work if you can bring Mr D with you on the application?! I would appreciate any advice or help !! Thanks !!!!
