But I can't understand why as they don't break up until the end of July and are off all of August, yet August the flights are appearing cheaper than July.

Not sure of the reason x

I think it is probably because Australian students are on holidays for 2 - 3 weeks in July (depending on school) and many families plan a trip for the European summer, often adding on a week or two which has an impact from late June to late July.

Melbourne is on an equivalent latitude to Lisbon and Athens in the Northern Hemisphere.

Would you describe Lisbon and Athens as having similar weather to London? 9_9

Indeed.  Pretty much the same temperature in both places today and yet here in Melbourne it is the equivalent of November in London.

  3. It depends if you are looking at a temporary or permanent move.  If it is permanent then GCSEs are irrelevant as there no 16 year old qualification in Australia.   It is expected that the vast majority of children will be at school until they are between 17.5 and 18.5 and they leave with a qualification at the end of that (Year 12, the 13th year at school).  If you are looking at a temporary move, or not sure, then you will need to bear in mind the timing for his education.

Also your visa type may impact on your liability for school fees in some states.  Many states now charge thousands of dollars per head for temporary residents to use state schools, so make sure you are across this.   Where are you thinking of moving to?

  4. Most people consider that it is not worth having insurance for braces.   The cover is minimal (as you have seen) abd the waiting period to claim is at least a year.  Given you are coming on a temp visa you may not have 12 months to waste!

If you are going to rely on Medicare just be very clear about any limitations on that because of your visa status.

Your orthodontist will offer a payment plan for the cost of braces - you are likely to pay monthly.   Also factor in the almost inevitable removal of wisdom teeth when the braces come off - it is not covered by Medicare unless it is medically required.  usually it is cosmetic as the aim is to avoid the growing wisdom teeth making the teeth crooked again

  5. I was intrigued by that so I just googled it. It seems that there is some confusion at the Royal mail about whether or not they will send jewellery to Australia.

If it is not too late, apparently people put "fashion accessories" on the customs form and then it goes through fine. You might need a different post office though!

  6. Remember we drive on the left - if you turned right at a red light you would be crossing the flow of traffic. in some places at some times you can tuen left on a red light. Certainly not in Victoria - perhaps a Queenslander can confirm if it happens there - I would imagine where you can do that there is a sign

  7. In Victoria maternal and child health nurses are employed by the local council. They see patients mainly in their clinic for check ups/ developmental reviews etc.. We do not have the equivalent of health visitors as a general rule. I'm pretty sure that all maternal and child health nurses in Victoria are nurses with additional midwifery qualifications. It s a well paid role ($90-100k).

  8. Well where you live is going to depend on what you do and where you will work. If two of you are a couple then you only need 2 beds and you will be able to afford a two bed flat not too far out. If you are 3 people who need 3 beds then you will be a long way out and should be focusing perhaps around Frankston where there is a little nightlife, a beach and a train to town. Or a regional city such as Geelong.

But really it will depend on what sort of work you will be doing and how centrally located you need to be. Do you have visas yet? The rental market is quite tight right now but expected to ease a bit as new apartment developments come on board in the next couple of years.

To be completely frank if you can only afford $400 a week in rent between 3 adults you may struggle to have a great life in Melbourne.

  9. Often people are shocked when they're moving from a low cost part of the UK that they can't afford a 4-bed detached property with pool a stone's throw from Melbourne etc. The show never seems to suggest that if they look at a different city or go further from the CBD that it could work for them. Unfortunately Sydney is no longer shown in the series presumably due to affordability.

As I remember the last couple of times they went to Sydney they had to show families 2 bed flats to get anywhere near close to budget and it did not seem to be a great success!
