  1. Nightlife for the over 60's? I don't think so. Shows are expensive - over $100 per ticket, can't do that every week. We do go dancing sometimes in the evenings, it's not the evenings that are the problem. It's what to do during the day. We're not interested in sunbaking - I would swim a bit, but my husband is paranoid about overdoing the sun since his skin cancer, so it's not worth the effort of getting to the beach. Manly is pleasant, the Blue Mountains are pretty, and I've certainly enjoyed them over the years - but it has been 30 years, and you can only go to the same places so many times!

It's the tyranny of distance that's the bane of Australian life really - the number of interesting places you can reach for a day trip is very limited, so you do them to death. Whereas you can pick almost any town in the UK and there would be any number of interesting historical sites, walks on disused railways, country pubs etc within a reasonable drive.

I'm not complaining really, because I do realise we're lucky not to be working - but that doesn't mean we have to resign ourselves to sitting at home all day reading a book.

Problem with UK,Marisa, is grid locked roads (specially weekends and bank holidays) and pubs are closing down at the rate of 27 a day.:arghh:
  2. My advice would be get some more quotes for your shipping, we have sole use of a 20ft container for £1800 less than you.

Hi Baz, who gave you such a good quote? we've been quoted between 4100 and 4600 pounds for a 20 foot container from Somerset to Perth (Mandurah)

  3. Got my wallet stolen twice in London whilst I lived there. Assaulted in Liverpool

    and hassled in Crewe.

Six years in Australia never even an insult.

Head kicked in in Liverpool, nearly murdered by mafia like gang in Bristol, threatened in Yeovil, but nothing in 34 years in Perth other than theft from taxman, councils, utility providers and employers,

  4. This quote could in fact relate to Australia too Carrotcruncher. I know quite a few people (British and Aussies) who are having a real hard time of it here in Perth. Australia like the UK is not a utopia, both have many problems with unemployment, drugs, violence etc...

Why is there always so much negativity on this forum when someone decides to move back to the UK? It is their choice for their own personal reasons, why shoot them down for it? I personally have no interest in ever living in Scotland again but what gives me the right to bad mouth either country, none!

Don't get me wrong. I'm merely telling him to really give consideration to his decision.

I was back in Perth 2 years ago and when I returned to the UK I considered life appeared quite a lot better in Perth and that's why we are returning. But everyone to his/her own.

  5. Hi guys. I've posted here a few times. You may recall I've had a bit of a turbulent time overthinking wether to move back to the UK or not. It's finally happening in June. I'm just hear to express my good news. I had an informal chat/interview today in Brisbane with the head of UK operations for the company I work for here. It went well, no absolute guarantees but pretty close to it.

    I can't wait for what's to come!

Think long and hard before committing yourself..There are hard times and severe austerity here in the UK. We've been here 4 years now and have seen real degeneration in living standards.

  6. Good Luck on your move back to Perth, icing on the cake to be with your Daughter too, lots of wonderful travel to Asia from Perth now so many good places and as you said you have the South West with lots to see and drink :-)), I have to disagree we do have heating costs not as much as the UK but we do use heating in Perth, all the best x

Thank you for your best wishes and yes, I remember lighting the log burner during the colder weather even in Sunny Sorrento where we lived (old Sorrento that is)

  7. I am guessing he means the economy - heading the wrong way now. I am just over the bridge in Southport and now shortage of Houses for sale by Banks at the moment or people selling at losses to just cover the mortgage - we recently benefited from that

Which economy is heading the wrong way?

I'm not sure which Southport you are in, so not sure which country you are referring to UK or Oz?

  8. That's interesting. We're in the same boat - looking at going back for the same reason. It's interesting that you've got to the stage of being "travelled out", as there seem to be considerable taxation obstacles to moving permanently and we've been debating whether to move lock stock and barrel, or leave most of our stuff in storage here for an eventual move back.

Did you have a base in the UK and have holidays from there, or did you move around?

We bought a house here on Exmoor. It looks like we've sold it now but despite the media hype we've lost money on it.

I think the exchange rate is on our side so a loss on the sale price is negated by the exchange rate.:skeptical:

  9. Hope you have the financial side sorted. UK pension will be frozen from day of departure from UK. One is required to live in Australia two years to qualify for an Aussie pension as I understand it.

Gosh travelled out from touring Europe? I guess you can take to the Grey Nomad trail or dip into Asia, which of course will be far cheaper and plenty of sun.

UK pension will only be 25 quid a week DWP inform me but I will continue getting my Oz pension (partial).

Wifey is not keen on caravans, so grey nomading is out. Probably will look around Asia, quite like Bali, but will do a lot of touring the Margaret River and SW vineyards.

  10. Funny how people want the OP to justify their decision but get stroppy when people ask someone to justify returning to the UK. Their decision their choice. Do what makes you happy. Good luck !

    Hi,

Lakelands eh! We still have a block at Wannanup, so will build there when we get back :daydreaming:

  11. And Adelaide. Gets really really cold here in Winter, believe it or not. We've been having some lovely mild days, but you can tell Winter's on its way come sunset. My electric blanket is on right now (it's 12.05am as I type). It's lovely here though.

Yeah love Adelaide, central markets are brilliant, much better food choices than Perth. Keep on enjoying

  12. I guess you have the visa to get back, which is great news. I worry about those who return home without citizenship just in case they decide it wasn't the right move.

Ah yes, I became an Aussie citizen 30 years ago, so "No worries" about any visas.
