I feel the same. Feels like a 7 year itch! Friends of ours who have been out for 10 years are making the move back to England and it has caused us to question why we are staying here too. Although it has only been 7 years, things have changed for us during that time here. The cost of living has sky rocketed, and after doing a comparison shop on Asda.com and woolworths online, you really can see the differences adding up greatly. The main thing for my hubby is the cost of beer! A simple pleasure, but it's half price at the supermarkets in the UK and actually affordable to go down the local pub...we don't even have a decent pub near us, its a bar and the cost of a pint (which isn't even a pint) and a G & T is the equivilent of 14 pounds! Everything is more expensive and the heat and the flies makes it horrible to go out and enjoy the day. Choice in the supermarket is a joke and the freshness and quality of the food on sale is terrible. Went back for a UK holiday year before last and bought some oranges and strawberries and the juice spilt all down me as I was so used to the dried up tasteless crap we buy over here I'd forgotten how tasty and juicy they are actually supposed to be! The choice of service providers too will be a bonus in the UK, not just Western Power as we have over here in PErth. The main thing I miss though is the holiday options. australia is so far from anywhere and costs so much to get anywhere. We are off back to visit our friends Christmas 2013 and will check out a new area to return to. Originally emmigrated from Nelson in Lancashire (hubbys from there but I'm from Essex) but are going to try and move back to Cornwall in a little village somewhere. One area Australia has been kind to us in is the property. We will be able to go back and buy a house without a mortgage which is good. My wage difference in the UK will be 2/3's less than what I'm earning here as a nurse, but when you weigh up all the pros and cons so being able to get out and about without being constantly bombarded by flies and burning from the intense sun's rays, enjoying eating and drinking out without taking out a second mortgage, and going on holidays without the 18 hour plus flight times we can't wait. We spent a lot of years planning to come out to Australia. I trained as a nurse just to get the visa points to come out here. WE have lived in tasmania but mostly WA. We are Australian citizens, and love the Australian attitude to living, but it's not enough. Not sure whether the UK can live up to what we remember, but we are willing to give it a go again, knowing that the grass isn't always greener (especially in WA - it's brown)!! good luck with your move back and just wanted to say your not the only one!
