  1. leah my wife is teaching in a private school here she is finding it much better than the uk. no ofstead stress she has had only three observations in two years she is basically left to get on with it with little interference. i have noticed the change in her shes so much happier. she still works hard and has a lot of marking to do and meetings with parents etc but overall its a much less stressful environment for her.

  2. My tip if your on a budget it to go out a little, that being said all my young friends live in the inner city, but they rents are really high, if you were to go thirty mins out on a train North or West you could save a fortune in Rent. Depends what you want... most of my young single travelling friends live in....

    Brunswick

    Fitzroy

    Docklands

    Windsor

    Richmond

    South Yarra

I would recommend Richmond... lots of the kind of jobs your looking for in the Richmond/South Yarra area and you only 5mins from city on the train.... but rent will cost u.

  3. The weird thing is the flight actually goes Melbourne > London (via Hong Kong) so I am wondering if its actually a CP flight... then Aer Lingus to Dublin.... So its an extra flight, but its $800 cheaper than just doing the Melbourne to London bit... Thats $800 per person..

  4. Its an extra 35 pounds for the luggage. You pay in advance either 15/20/30 kg, 35 is for the 20kgs.. Its worth it for us for sure, if we had flown to London we would have to add about 60 pounds in train fare (maybe more)..

  5. . we just saved $800 by flying to Dublin instead of any of the UK airports via British Airways of all people $1600 return... just need to pay the $50 to fly from Dublin to Birmingham on Ryanair now, easier than getting the train up from London.

Some great tips, but I don't believe below..

Also, many frequent travellers swear by deleting the cookies on their internet browsers. Return visits to an airline's website can bump up the flight prices.

  6. Hi I just booked September flights the other day

I had to think outside the box and fly to dublin to get a $1600 flight.

Check it out to see if that's still cheap. Was from melb tho. i agree with u that its a lot mpre expensive to go from aus however I keep seeing people saying they got really cheap fares on royal bruni. Never seen those fares myself might need to book way in advance outside school hols

  7. 1) My wife didn't have to teach at any of her interviews. I think they were only an hour or so long... Also you don't get told on the day... My wife told me in the UK you had to hang around on the day waiting for them to make a decision...

    3) There is an education supplement in THE AGE newspaper on a Saturday that has lots of jobs in it. I would start applying now if I was you, it is prime jobs time NOW... Apply now say your in Australia buy the time they interview you will be... If you wait till Early Oct till you apply you will have missed most of the jobs

  8. So as the title says, I am an IT project manager with around 11 years of experience in the IT&T sector. I moved to Sydney in the mid of June and have been actively looking for similar openings since then, but haven't gotten lucky yet.

I was intervwed by a company twice for a profile exactly matching my experience and was informed by my consultant that I shall be called for the final round of interview (which never happened). 2 weeks after that I was informed that they hired someone close to the hiring manager :(. I got 2-3 calls from other recruiters after that but none of them turned into an interview.

It's going to be almost 2 months since I arrived here (I know it usually takes around 5-6 months to land in a job here) but everyday I am losing hopes. I would like to hear from my fellow IT folks around here about their experiences finding a job and maybe share some tips one needs to follow while looking our for openings.

    Cheers,

    Varun

still very early days dont worry. I applied for 100 or so before landing job

  9. Just wanting to share some info on Science / Maths

I am a Science Maths teacher and landed in Oz with experience in teaching both. No real issues getting a job as they are usually paired together. Our school has just hired another UK teacher to teach Science / Maths combo. However she was unable to secure a contract to teach for the first 3 years in Qld and ended up in primary supply. This is most likely because despite many years experience, only Science was offered on the CV. So if you are a Science teacher and Maths is not yet in your toolkit, it might be worth taking on some Maths teaching or training before coming to Oz

This is certainly true, memory is fading now but I think there was only about 10 straight science teaching jobs out of 100 when my girlfriend was applying. Had no maths experience but she was able to get a Maths/Science teaching job. They just give her the year 7 and 8 Maths classes to build her Maths experience. So I guess next time (Not that she will ever need to great school perm contract) she had to look for a job she should be much better placed with the maths experience.

We did notice this in advance and she tried to get Maths classes at her UK school but they weren't interested, why would they be when they have specialist maths teachers. Cant understand why 4 Maths/Science teachers is better than 2 Maths and 2 Science.

  10. I Googled 'Meet Ups' and there are a number of social groups in the Brisbane area, including one for the 'Young and Socially Anxious' which might be helpful for your daughter. But she might have other 'issues' unrelated to being 'just' lonely, if she is feeling depressed, so maybe think about going to your GP?

This is the way to go for sure, my wife and I would have no social life if it had not been for meetup. It really is great, if she cant find one she likes she can start her own. Every person we know we have meet via meetup other than 2 we met on this site

  11. Hi, I got an IT in Melbourne from the UK. The one tip I can give you is avoid agencies, they will not take the time or effort to deal with people that are not in the country. Once I realized this I started applying only to companies that advertised directly themselves, that had their own HR people. Yes there are less jobs, but I believe you have a much higher chance.

For one company I was interviewed in the UK in person by someone who was in the country on business.

For another three there were Skype interviews.

And I got a job, left my job in the UK Friday night with my suitcase jumped on the plance landed here Sunday and went to work on Monday. It can be done, job was as a SQL Server DBA, other jobs interviewed for where different programmer jobs and another SQL based role.

The only thing (I dont know if this made a difference), I am actually Australian was returning after 10 years in the UK.. maybe that made a bit of a difference I dont know.

  12. At the planning stage at the moment-

Did you decide where you'd like to be based and apply for jobs there or were you flexible and let job offers lead the way?

I'm hearing our plan to locate in Perth/Sydney/Melbourne or their suburbs may be a bit idealistic in terms of finding work as a teacher.

I have 5 years experience teaching English, a Masters in Teaching and TEFL. Hoping that helps.

The way we did it, is I got a job in Melbourne first from UK, then we came over and my wife (the teacher) looked for any work within an hour and a half distance of mine.

You need to decide on your state first as you need to register to teach in that state. but defo don't pick a suburb... go where the jobs are..

  13. I have always monitored it, as I lived in Australia and my nan used to send me cheques in pounds for birthdays and xmas :). It was always normally in the 2.2 - 2.5 range, got up to nearly 3 a few times over the years, it is still low now. One thing I am not sure about thought is whether it cant go back to what it used to be because UK printed all that extra money when they were in trouble... does that permanently devalue a currency?
