  1. I did find this online so it might be the case that the original date does not get changed as the pension was suspended not stopped as she didn’t have to reclaim after the holiday She actually rang Centrelink prior to going on holiday to ask if she had to inform them she going away and was told no

There is no discretionary power to allow portability of Age or DSP during the 2-year period (note, some exceptions to the 2-year rule apply - see below).

Payment may be suspended for short overseas absences during the 2-year period and does not have to be reclaimed on return to Australia. A short absence from Australia (as long as the person is still classed as an Australian resident) will not impact on the end date of the 2-year period (i.e. the absence still counts towards the person's 2-year period

  2. Not sure if this is the right forum but !

Asking for a friend re Centrelink pensions

The friend who has been a citizen for years returned to Australia after living in the UK in December 2021 and claimed her Age pension from that date

She recently went on holiday for 2 weeks  Jan 29th  to Feb 12th 2023 and her pension was stopped as was her Centrelink card ( she did think it would be stopped as she knows there is a 2 year rule )

She received a new card in the mail and its dated from her return date in February 23

But does that mean her residency period also has to start from that date again -so it would be another 2 years before she can leave the country ?

I thought her residency start date would stay as December 2021 plus 2 weeks for the 2 she left the country on holiday

Any ideas please as its very confusing

  3. We brought our Shar Pei out in 2016 and even back then the UK was no longer classed as 'rabies free " it was something like rabies controlled ( That was because of open borders ) I do remember there had 2 be i think it was 6 months between the rabies vax and titre test but not sure how long the reults were valid for at that stage

  4. Our friends rang Qantas and we’re told no it’s still a direct flight to Perth from Heathrow But the direct flight out now goes from Darwin to Heathrow In some ways I think the left hand does not know what the right is doing Time will tell I suppose

Not me but  friends who are in the UK at the minute They plan to come back to Oz in December and have a direct16 hour  flight to Perth booked with Quantas from Heathrow

They recently applied for the G2G pass and were knocked back the reply stated they do not meet the criteria Both are double vacinated  and had a booster Both are citizens too

My thinking is should they have completed the Dept of Human Affairs travel form before the G2G ?

    Would appreciate any input thanks

Thanks everyone -friends now have G2G pass confirmed and as far as i know it is the direct Heathrow -Perth flight they have booked They did i beleive upload the ticket to get the pass but nothing has been said as to the flight being diverted to Darwin Only time will tell I guess

    Hi all

Im planning to bring my dog to Australia winter next year, im just so stressed about it I already can't sleep at night , I read a lot of news of frenchies dying etc and it's stressing me out 😩 is there anywhere an official data that's show how many dogs are flying annually and what is the procentage of fatalities ?

Im doing my research early to prepare my dog and myself , anyone know how does the flight look ? What is the route ? Is it completely dark in the cargo ? Anyone have an experience in flying a Frenchie ?

Im even thinking is there a camera in the market that I can watch my dog while he's in the plane ?

    Thanks for help

We flew our Shar Pei a brachalyptic breed with no problems ( except our UK vet stuffed up on the last blood test ! Luckily we had a fantastic company moving him who sorted it all out We flew him mid May to avoid the Northern hemisphere  heat As it was a direct flight via Dubai It’s never to early to start the process as the rabies shots need to be verified for 6 months prior to shipping In all honesty I would leave it in the hands of an experienced company though to save the worry of things going wrong

We both have come to a decision to move back. As we get older we have realised it’s time to go all our families live in uk we have no family here.

Our only son was born in Australia and moved to uk 18 months ago and has no plans to return. Australia has been good to us and great place to live but as we all get older our priorities change.

My question is we were both born in the uk and lived there for 24years before we emigrated to Australia we let our British passports run out can we fly into uk and apply for British passports later on?.

We had a British friend pulled up at UK immigration when he entered Britain on a one way ticket on his Aussie passport ( It was an emergency and his UK passport had run out years before the trip ) He was 'detained ' for an hour and a half and then set free lol I would get your UK passport well before you leave

    Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to move to Aus next August, and taking my lovely little cat with me.

We've done the rabies vacs and got her serology certificate, I now just need to pick a pet shipper to help with the rest!

I've heard good things about Golden Arrow, and had a reassuring chat with them, my only problem is that I am in the north of England, only about an hours drive from Manchester airport, so would much rather go from there if possible! I have unfortunately not found many pet shippers that fly out of Manchester, the few I have been in touch with just don't seem too keen on gaining my custom (perhaps due to current covid restrictions, but it doesn't give me much confidence in them).

Has anyone flown any pets from Manchester? If so, which pet shipper did you use and were there any problems?

    Thanks all!

We used Golden Arrow for our dog an they were brilliant ( last minute panic over lost blood test ) We lived in the North East and they took our boy to thier kennels without a hitch

  10. Thanks for the answers everyone - I do think my friend is being paid incorrectly and she has contacted the International Service previously to no avail

I cant understand why her pension though did not increase ( as mine did ) based on her hubbys contributions when he retired

Must add this note as it was laughable

We returned to live in Oz in 2016 after a couple of years in the UK - Wrote to and phoned International services giving them our new Aussie address prior to leaving the UK

Two months later our UK pension was suddenly stopped no payments in the bank Then we received a letter addressed to our address in Oz ( which we had given them ) saying our pensions had been stopped as they did not know where we were !!! ( You could not make it up could you )

I rang them them and the poor bloke on the phone full of apologies but could not stop laughing -neither could i and it was sorted quickly but !

  11. We flew our Shar Pei with Qantas UK to Oz and had no problems But there was a cut off period when it was too hot from May to September  I think Qantas needs to look at its procedures ie designated handler to make sure that no animals are left on a hot runway or outside To me its not the breed thats the problem its how they are looked after during the journey

  12. My question is about UK government pensions after chatting with a friend who to me does not seem to be getting her due

My friend emigrated in 1982 aged 34 having worked full time for many years from leaving school She paid the full stamp as it was called back then

She claimed her UK pension here in Oz when she turned 65 ( think that was her age it was approx. 9 years ago ) She now gets around 20 GBP per week and has been told it cant be raised even based on her hubby's UK pension -he is now 76

I on the other hand only paid the ‘small stamp “ married women’s my pension was 5p a week paid annually lol When my hubby turned 65 I was able to make a claim based on his pension entitlement and now receive 37 GBP per week

Does anyone think my friends payments are right

Her nephew several years younger than her emigrated at aged 20 having only worked a few years in the UK

He has recently received his UK pension and is getting much more than either of us ?

I know there were new rules that came out a few years back does anyone have any idea of how the system works things out now

  13. Hi We are moving back to Oz next year and plan on taking our dog -injections etc started However we have been told Emirates will only fly in their winter months ie 0ctober and lay over in Singapore is no longer an option

Qantas seemingly trialling flights once a week but will that continue ?

We would have liked to have travelled around July -August time 2016 any ideas ?

  14. You need to be a resident in Australia for a full year before your retirement age. If you return AFTER retirement age as you suggested, you have to be a resident for two years. Info from CES researcher on my behalf who thought the rules unfair!

Full UK pension can be paid by DWP if you do not get a full Centrelink pension ( you have to prove work history in Oz and it goes back before 2002 when the reciprocal agreement ended)

BUT in that respect the UK pension is means tested ie if you get part or full Centrelink pension you wont get full pension you will only get what you would 'normally ' get

We have just waded through numerous forms after coming back to the UK in late December 2013 We got a small increase in the UK pension because we are now resident again but as we get full Centrelink pensions we wont get full UK pensions If however anyone pays back NI contributions it ups the UK pension but you then loose off the Centrelink pension A minefield really !

  15. Bit of info on Centrelink pensions in that as from July 1st 2014 the eligiblity for claiming will be 35 years working life -it is now 25 years

Working life being classed on how long you have been in Australia between the age of 16 & 65 ( or retirment age )

We came home to the UK in December 2013 ,i get full Centrelink Pension hubby 85% because of his age when we emigrated

Our UK pensions which we were claiming while we were in Oz did rise a tad when we returned to live in the UK

DWP did send forms asking us about our Aussie pensions because seemingly if you dont get a Centrelink pension the UK could possibly pay you full UK pension based on your working life in Australia

( That though was our status as we emigrated to the UK in 1982 the canceling of the reciprocal agreement in 2002 changed some immigrants status though)

The Centrelink letter we received recently does state we will continue to get our pensions at the current rates as we are allready outside of Australia

However it also states if we go back to Australia and stay more than 26 weeks then the rates would drop to the new rates

Another pointer is that you must be in in Australia to claim the Centrelink pension or you dont get it !

Its a point to look at for anyone thinking of leaving Australia with a Centrelink pension as if the move is not made before July 1st the pension rate could drop dramatically

  16. Hi Patsmb - wow really! Was it expensive??

cant remember the cost just the kerfuffle invloved

The steam cleaning twice was annoying as the firm invloved in Oz in doing the steam cleaning obvioulsy did not do a good enough job ,just took up more time in the end getting the car back on the road

  17. Ah thanks so much for the numbers, very useful. Completely understand, we took stripped back to a shell and bare metal, replaced so many panels, and lovingly put it all back together ourselves, she's our baby! Like you, we know every nut and bolt on this van, I don't fancy starting the whole resto project again, it took us 2 years to restore and we were working on it non stop. I think hubby is concerned that if it needs a deep/steam clean it will be damaged, but I don't think that will happen, like I said, it's been stripped back to bare metal so it's pretty clean anyway.

I can't see him leaving it behind, he gets the polish cloth out every time we stop somewhere, so embarrassing in the petrol station lol. Do you know if you're allowed to fill the van with personal effects as well??

Customs and quarantine are VERY particular when it comes to steam cleaning, our vehicle had been detailed and was spotless but was steam cleaned twice by AQUIS at a cost too !

  18. Just an addition about portability of pensions. Hubby and I chose to leave before January 1st when the criteria was supposedly changing to 35 years working life I have tried for months to get verification of the change from Centrelink as leaving to go back to the UK winter is not the best choice ! Having tried to ring and obtain info from Centrelink offices I wrote to them in October heard nothing back so we booked flights sold house etc and leave tomorrow Guess what last week we got a letter in the mail saying the legislation has not been passed so we could have waited until around March which would have been our choice of time frame Rather annoying but it's done now just wanted to let anyone know who is thinking of moving back after retirement age that options are still open
