  5. The rules of the RSMS onshore subclass 857 are that the main applicant must have completed at least a diploma qualification on their "current" student visa or you are holding TR (485). As soon as you have completed a diploma qualification on your current student visa you can proceed to lodge an onshore RSMS 857 visa application. If you have yet to complete a diploma qualification on your current student visa then they will proceed to lodge an offshore RSMS subclass 119 application. There is no difference between the two, the same legislation and processing time applies. The onshore 857 grants a bridging visa which comes into effect when you current student visas expire if a decision had not yet been made on your RSMS application before your visas expires, which would let you stay here lawfully until a decision was made on your RSMS. The 119 does not grant you a bridging visa and as such which you wait for the RSMS 119 to process you must continue to hold a valid visa. If processing times went beyond your current visa expiry then a student visa extension or another visa would need to be applied for to stay in Australia while awaiting the 119. In addition for the 119 at the time of the visa decision you need to go outside for 3 working days for the visa to be granted Thanks
