  1. A lot are ignorant because they have never or probably will never experience persecution first hand. If you were in a position where you will most likely be killed because of the things you believe, the way you look, talk or just the area you were born in, I doubt if your opinion will still be as strong regarding seeking asylum.

And Sarah is right, seeking asylum/being a refugee is not illegal. I suppose it's much easier to travel by boat to safety than use the airport where travelling processes are more stringent.

  2. Tabloid nonsense for the large part and as I have written before so what if they have some money? Who ever said a person seeking asylum must be dressed in rags and be skin and bone? The price varies as judged by the country fleeing and circumstances.

When has anyone at anytime provided a service for free? Nothing what so ever to do with persecution in home country nor if a refugee or not under UNHCR regulations.

In addition, when they seek asylum, their family members and community pool together all their money to get them to safety.

  3. Great news!

I don't think getting a job should be that hard -are you registered with the WA State Government vacancies site? State government is the largest employer in WA. Also do a search for Serco vacancies at the new Fiona Stanley Hospital - I am not sure if Serco are doing HR for the hospital I suspect not but they will have their own HR requirements.

Thamks Jules, you have been very kind.

I am registered with the WA State Gov site and also with some local governments as there have been some vacancies recently that fit my profile. No feedback from them yet but I understand that can take up to 3 weeks.

I also took a look at the Fiona Stanley Hospital you mentioned by going to their careers site. Looks like they are only recruiting medical positions at this time.

I do appreciate your feedback but I am getting very desperate now. I paid for professional CV writing and that's what I've been sending out but I don't even have any calls for interviews, after one week!

    Phew!

  4. Thanks for all your kind responses, guys.

I'm in Perth now and decided to stay in a bed and breakfast on Hay street. It was cheap about $35/night and my hosts were lovely.

I got a shared flat 3 days later in Rivervale and I moved in immediately.

Next step is to get a job which as I hear is almost impossible, these days.

    Hi,

I'll be arriving Perth on the 1st of May and it's been an absolute nightmare securing house share from London. I've had a look at gum tree but haven't had any feedback from all of the people I've written. I don't know why but I can't view numbers on gumtree Australia, hence can't call ad owners. Could this be because I'm new on there or maybe because I have a UK IP address?

I've also tried homebound, realestate, easyroomate (I've especially stalked this site for months and not got any favourable feedback) and everywhere else I can look on the internet. I'm trying to be as frugal as possible with money, and since I'm coming alone, I don't want to spend any money staying in a hotel when I might as well move straight into a rental with people around to talk to.

All I want is a room close enough to the CBD (Canningvale, Bentley, Joondaloop etc. Anywhere, really as I've never been to WA and I'm just basing my knowledge on the area on google maps) on a budget of 150-200 per week. I'm female, 28, HR professional, neat, quiet, shy and a rare social drinker. I read a lot, a huge movie buff (a nerd sort of) and will be needing a mid-long term lease.

    Help, please!

    Thank you.

    Kay.

  6. Well easy! Shop at coles and get all better buy products. If you live in Melbourne walk everywhere or get the tram and don't pay for it. Sit near the machine in case the inspector comes and pretend you are about to put the coins in, if he does. if not pretend to be french or pretend that you are trying to put a note in and you cant understand why that's not working...

Drink Goon with your mates of course or go to a church when a communion is taking place, free piss ups are great! Gate crashing weddings is really fun too.

    Wow....just wow.

    This is fraudulent.

  7. I spend more than $60 on meat a week alone and thats from the butchers, good quality organic.

I would rather spend my money on good quality food, than other things though.

I am hoping that we can buy soon, so I can grow a lot of my own foods and get chickens..

I'm curious... if and when you do start breeding chickens, how will you turn to meat? Kill by yourself? How is that done?

  8. I don't think they care if you have friends in Australia or not. They are usually more concerned that you have enough funds to care for yourself, and enough information available at your disposal to get a job when you arrive.

You have nothing to worry about.

  9. I'm very concerned about you wanting to settle and have a baby and him not being around at all. Are you sure you're on the same page regarding this? It might explain many things e.g why you had cold feet before moving, why you're ready to pack up and move without really putting a lot of effort into adapting to your new life etc.

  10. Why don't you respond to your case officer with everything you just said there?

    1) Tell them the university did respond. Ask the uni for evidence of this email. Point out the website containing the Uni's numbers.

    2) Apologise for network glitches etc. Point out that at no point did you say you were there 4 years.

    3) Apologise for network glitches again (Are they really that bad? Many developing countries have reasonable phone networks, is there another reason?)

Point out that no deadline was given in your letter so you have responded as quickly as possible.

Separately, ask to speak to your case officer's manager and point out that you are concerned that your CO's attention to detail is lacking. Give lots of evidence for this.

I'm talking with an agent now. Hopefully, it will be sorted asap.

  11. Hi all,

I received a letter from DIAC in the early hours of this morning requesting my comments on claims made in my application.

    1. They said they emailed my University to verify my qualifications and that there was no response. Also that the numbers I provided for the university were all wrong.

When I was asked to provide contact numbers for my uni, I just went straight to the school's website and copied and pasted all the numbers and emails listed. I then called someone who worked in the registrar's office to ask what the procedure for third party verification was, and he told me an email to the registrar will be responded to within 24 hours. Now they are saying the information I provided was false because that email wasn't answered. I spent the whole of today trying to get in touch with anyone in the office and I was told that they received an email from DIAC and responded immediately. Now I am caught between the two sides and don't know how to defend myself on that front.

    2. My current employer was also called. They said the number on my company website truly matches the ones on my references but when they called the number it was switched off. I don't know how that happened, there are network glitches all the time here as it is a developing country and technology cannot be 100% effective.

They then called my MD whom I report directly to. As I'm the HR and Admin coordinator of the group, he was asked if I was also a director of the group to which he said no. I'm not a director, just a manager. I never claimed anywhere on my application to be a director, I'm at managerial level and this was explicitly stated in my references. Now they are saying I overstated my duties and exaggerated my claims. They said my boss said I hadn't worked there for up to a year and yet I was claiming to have worked there for 4 years. THERE IS NOWHERE ON MY APPLICATION WHERE I CLAIMED TO HAVE WORKED FOR 4 YEARS! This particular bit is irking me because I stated clearly that I started work in the company on the 3rd of October 2011. Where then are they getting 4 years from?

    3. They said they called my previous employers but when the phone was picked, they couldn't hear anything. I called them today to investigate further and my former supervisor said indeed they called but he couldn't hear anything over the network. He expected them to call back or at least email but that didn't happen. Again due to network glitches, I don't know how to defend myself. I have no control over these things and I'd hate to think that my visa will be refused because they didn't send follow up emails and refused to call back.

My case officer in particular has been very very ineffective. She has referred to me TWICE as "Mr." even after correcting her that I am female. It is indicated in my application that I am female, how come attention is not being paid to my application?

In the letter she wrote this morning, she said I must respond within the given period -- a deadline. I read the letter more than 5 times and she never wrote any tentative date for my response. Am I then supposed to assume a deadline for myself? These and the fact that she's accusing me of claiming 4 years experience with one company when I clearly didn't say I had worked there for 4 years is giving me reason to think she's not competent enough to handle my application.

My question now is .. how do I respond to the letter? How do I even begin to defend myself when reasonable doubt to my claims haven't been given? How do I address her issues with inefficiency?

Sorry for long post but All and any advice to this regard will be greatly appreciated.

  12. Erm, actually he's applied for everything from labourer to TA, to working in a bloody pig farm and a scrap yard just to get us by. There are hundreds of applicants per job. The ones he has spoken to for a TA have clearly told him they just want a 17-22 year old, not to mention someone with Ozzy experience. Or they're miles away and out of our region.

It's absolutely NOTHING to do with pride or greed or ignorance. He has cold called in on businesses here. Given resumes to agents. Trawled the net. Asked in pubs. So I do think you are being a little judgemental here saying he thinks he's too good to be a TA.

He went for a job interview today that was offering $16 an hour in a scrap yard which was 1.5 hours away for a part time hours which wouldn't even cover fuel after tax. He got turned down anyway as they wanted a local school leaver!

Perhaps one day (when you've finished making your millions in Oz backpacking) things will change for you and you'll know how it feels? I hope not though.

Ok, so I came on here whilst having a moment, worried about the future and feeling quite negative. I know something will come up, and we will stay here.

I actually like Mandurah. It's just the bulk of the work isn't within our zone.

Our holiday accommodation is expensive, as we had to book it very last minute and it was all we could get at the time (as we'd been let down at the last minute on the cheaper one) but we've now got a perm rental for a very decent price.

My original moan on here was about the visa restrictions!

I like Oz, and am glad we're here. And here we will stay!

    Maginca,

You've been given loads of wonderful advise so far, someone has even offered to give you your first grooming job. Why are you ignoring all those and focusing on a negative vile person instead?

  13. A lawyer notorized all the documents I sent for my skills assessment and it was accepted. If that doesn't work, why not look online for the appropriate notaries for your documents, contact them and mail over your documents using return mail via DHL or something?

  14. What would you say your occupation is? Primary school or secondary school teacher? I think the first step is to check if your specific occupation on the Skilled Occupations List here:

http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/_pdf/sol-schedule1-2.pdf. When you find your occupation, contact the organization in charge of assessing your skills and find out the requirements for your skills assessment. You might want to go for independent skilled or state sponsored visa, depending on the number of points your age, years of experience, IELTS score can get you.

I wish you the best of luck.
