Sounds like you know your stuff amigo. But to be fair sounds exactly like the UK and I appreciate how stupid I would look pullin out some photos, but at the end of the day all my point was I'm a drainer in the UK.. And all I wanted to know was how to get my skills recognised. And your saying its a stupid idea to just land with a WHV an try to get assessed or sponsored, but yet in the next breathe I'm being told I wouldn't be able to get a sponsorship or anything whilst I'm in the UK which makes perfect sense. I wouldn't hire someone who's half a world away. When I've got a job there joe ill buy you a skooner

The specialist skill that's attached to drainer, is sceptic tank installation. Which I have been "head drainer" on several projects in the UK the most significant been 2 extremely large tanks on an international airport, also 2 large tanks on the silverstone Grand Prix circuit... I've been putting foul and top water drainage in since i was 18, so yes I'm more than confident that I am HONEST about the skills I have, I'm very disappointed that you would question my integrity :mad:. I can appreciate the migration system has been abused by idiots who say they can do a job but can't... In the UK a "ground worker" is a drainer and civil operative all rolled into one once you have gained enough experience. So yes I am drainer and a lot more too. The only license I will need as far as what I have read would be a white card, and I have emailed the governments assessing bodies for several states. When they get back to me with a reply I will post back on here, in hope to help shed some light on this subject. Just simply because from all the legal requirements I've read, I'd be right in what I'm saying. I understand where your coming from, but it sounds like you don't understand the construction industry as rule. please don't take this as arrogance, as any info is greatly appreciated, be it positive or negative.

I'm very confused now :err:... Am I been thick here, but.. If drainers aren't in demand.. Then why are we still on the SOL? Why hasn't the government taken them off the list? also this employer sponsorship route I'm hoping to take, even if I had qualifications in England, they wouldn't be valid in Australia? So is there any reason can't I have my skills assessed whilst on my years WHV? Otherwise how do drainers get in?? Also wouldn't an employer jump at the chance to employ someone that knows what he's doing, as opposed to an apprentice who's fresh out of school? Couldn't the sponsor, put me through "training" and pay me an apprentices wage? Until qualified, then that the employer gets a qualified worker for a discounted price, and in return, the worker gets to work and stay in Australia.

So is it not possible to get my skills as a drainer assessed whilst on WHV? Or perhaps do an intensive course as I already know what im doing?

Hey, thanks Gra. thats very helpful. I was hoping to take this route and try to get my skills as a Drainer assessed whilst in Australia, then land a job with a drainage company and hopefully secure a 457.

I've worded my profession wrong after looking on the SOL ... I'm a Drainer, I am going to get a WHV, get to Australia and get work with a drainage company. And Profession aside I've got a cracking personality and ambition and drive that is second to none with portfolio too match . So joebloggs my negative friend the door is not quite shut yet by all accounts. So surely the dream is still alive for this motivated individual. Hi, I'm 30 years old and a ground worker in the UK (basically I drive 360 excavators, small dumpers and rollers. I can lay paving slabs/blocks/kerbs top water and foul drainage and build manholes. Concrete finishing, underground ducting etc etc) my birthday is in April next year making me 31. My long term girlfriend is already 31 and is a retail sales assistant in a lighting shop. We are wanting to start a family and hoped Australia could be great place to raise a family. Is it too late for us though? As I know my girlfriend can't get a WHV because of her age, unless I've missed something? And from what I've read I may struggle dependant on when we leave the UK. i was hoping we could get a little advice? or any suggestions on other possible routes into Australia? Also I've been doing the work I do for 10years now, I'm very experienced at what I do and meet a lot of people on construction sites that say they have friends that have moved there and haven't looked back. Is this the case? I have no official qualifications other than my machine licenses & only a few recent photos of the work I've done on various sites. without rambling on much more, thanks for taking time to read this. steve

Hi there, im writing this on behalf of my dad, hes 60-61 this year, and is a site & project manager in the UK he has been in construction since the 80's. He is mainly involved in Re-surfacing, Over seeing new construction projects all over the UK the last 10 years has mainly been race circuits for Motor Sport Vision, these include venues such as Brands Hatch, Snetterton (was on TV for the new section built) he has also done, resurfacing and new track construction on Siverstone Grand prix circuit. Other projects have included working for the Ministry of Defence, on U.S Airbases located in the UK... he has built several houses and has a very good knowledge and understanding of pretty much everything. yeh ive got all my tickets in the UK for the machines, just not got tickets for my groundwork side. ive been reading up on the courses, i saw the $400 ones thought they might be feesable from what ive read but wasnt sure, as $1800 did make my throat go dry. As im only 28 (29 in April) ive applied for the WHV and gonna try to get a job when i get there, then see if they want me at the end of it... dunno if thats allowed but i know ive deffinately got 2 years too sort it ) thanks again for the info, between you, google, and a few others on here, im about ready )

Hi my dad is 60 years of age but is a project manager/ site supervisor (also knows civil engineering and CAD) for a large construction company in the UK Some of his projects have been on Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, Donnington park, Brands Hatch, American Army bases and loads more. He is well known in his specific area and is extremely good and what he does.. I keep pestering him to come to australia but he doesnt think he will be able to get into the country because of his age... is this true?

Hi i asked a question on behalf of my friend before regarding WHV he had already had one in 2004? and did not do any work in the specific area to be able to extend or apply for a 2nd WHV. As my and my gf are coming out to Aus in June/July he is now wanting to get accross with us, after asking the question above ^ soon realised theres no chance of another WHV for him.. i have read a thread about a 36 year old chap who has applied for a student visa and will be entering oz as a "mature student" i was wondering if it would be possible for my friend to attempt this way round as he has no solid qualifications in the UK.. can anyone help?

Hi, Im struggling to understand or get info on driving in Aus, from what i can gather on my UK license (that ive had 3 years with cat B, and B1) i can drive in Aus for up to 3 months. This is great news.. but from what i have read.. are the laws different all over Aus? or is it just WA that its slightly diff an if so how? Im in Heavy costruction, my usual job in the UK consists if driving dumpers, rollers, & 360 tracked machines (groundworker by trade) and i think im goin to need a HR license in Aus, or if not at least an MR license. i have been on the australian driving website but there all numbers to call, so before i ring up and make a complete bell end of myself thought someone might be able to help out? How much are the tests? will i be eligible? how long do the tests take? is it worth doin? thanks for reading this )

Hi Steve, Thank you for your email requesting information on using your 360 excavator, ride on roller and tipping dumper qualifications in Western Australia. The Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996 state that the use of earth moving equipment (and similar types of plant) in WA does not require a High Risk Work Licence to operate. This means that you do not need a WorkSafe licence for those types of equipment. The use of such equipment falls under the duty of care requirement. The person who employs operators of earth moving equipment (and similar types of plant), or has control of the workplace where earth moving equipment is operated, has duties under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984. These duties include providing information, instruction training and supervision as is necessary to ensure the operators can perform their work in such a manner that they are not exposed to hazards. To fulfill this obligation an appropriate risk assessment must be done to determine the additional information, instruction, training and supervision on the various attachment(s) fitted to equipment, which must be provided to the operator. You may need a separate licence if you wish to operate this type of equipment on public roads. ive been looking into the same thing lostboy2, hope this helps ^ theres a new rule/law thats passed as of jan 2012 as regarding Licensing for Plant, i have emailed several companies and had a reply off all of them. To be fair every question ive emailed or posted has been answered with detail. maybe we could get a drainage gang together? im out there in May/june time... allllrrrigghht :biggrin:

I've looked into changing plant operator tickets over and as I can understand there's a new law that's just been passed where by operators on plant need to be compitent but I'm emailing everyone I can for info on that.
