  1. That's great to hear. I greatly appreciate the offer of PM you nearer the time & will most definitely take you up on that.

If you don't mind me asking are you working more rurally & if so do you have children? Was just wondering as hubby & I really fancy this but have two kids age 12 & 14 at the moment & was unsure how this would be for them.

i arrived with 14 and 8 year old boys. My 14 year old is a sports fanatic and loves it here in rural NSW. I love the community spirit you get in towns rather than cities. I am happy to travel for shopping etc. the boys did cricket, soccer, rugby union, swimming, golf, tennis, athletics and the eldest went to compete at the NSW Eastern Creek state finals for the cross country after winning his school race etc. He has come runner up in Tamworth Junior Golf open in his age/grade. For him life is perfect. The younger onew loves it here too though he took a little longer to settle. He works in a cafe at the weekend and a few days after school. He will soon be driving.

Hubby found a job in his hospitality world just over a month after we arrived here. He had not found work at his manager level back home for a long while. He only regrets not coming sooner.

We we love the lifestyle, the country welcome and have a good, but not hectic, social life. My work has bent over backwards to make us feel at home and get settled. I can recommend my employing health district as good to work with.

I am not a city girl so it suits me, I want my children to have that upbringing so we are very happy going rural. :)

  2. Hi, I am at the second interview stage for a job, Typical Australia they dont advertise the salary but asked me my expectations when I applied. On the phone to arrange second interview he said he wanted to talk about those expectations. I am currently paid 75,000 with a payrise to 80,000 in the pipeline.

I put on the application I wanted 85,000 - 90,000 for the new job. He said they wouldnt go that high, they usually pay in the 70-75 region for the job. However he said because it was a registered charity I would double my tax free threshold, so the 75 could turn out to be worth more than 80,000.

Combined with salary packaging which he said would mean cheaper meals out, cheaper holidays etc, a cheap car etc.. the benefits would stack up to maybe match my expectation..

Just wondered if anyone is paid like this, does it really save you loads of money? Can 75,000 really turn into 85,000 ?

you can raise your tax free allowance to $34,000 by salary packaging. With a meals entertainment card I then raise it to $42k all legally.

I love that it pays to work here, rather than being penalised like I was in the UK

  3. Thanks for the reply GilraenH. The thought of less child protection on the caseload is a very welcome thought!

It's NSW we're hoping to head to but no idea exactly where. Will depend greatly on work prospects as the thought of returning to the hospital after so long in community terrifies me. Will keep a close eye on the job sites while I wait for our next stages of visa & APHRA.

Hope you're enjoying your new life.

yes bigmac mac enjoying it very much! Pm me nearer the time :)

  4. I'm also a health visitor here in Scotland & would be very interested in hearing about how the role compares to here in the UK. I'm concerned that vacancies for the child & family health nurse roles don't appear to come up that often. Is this the case? Any information would be gratefully received.

It depends on where you are looking. NSW Health often has positions in CFHN advertised. The role is similar but less autonomous. You are very like a public health nurse rather than a health visitor. I use the same skills but less often as there is no real child protection or looked after children caseloads. I am an authorised immuniser, I do primary visits called UHHVs and child health checks, breast feeding support etc. not so different :)

    good luck.

  5. I have just qualified as a SCPHN and I am also a registered mental health nurse. Do you have any contact details for anyone who I could email for further information regarding Job opportunities (as a child and family health nurse) and/or sponsorship please. thanks.

i applied for jobs and when successful was offered sponsorship. If they haven't been able to fill the post locally they may offer sponsorship. I would also suggest you talk to Rural Doctors network (rdnnsw) who can link you up with potential employers for sponsorship eligible positions. Good luck. :)

  6. I'm a Nurse and had my medicals done right after christmas. I had the medical examination, Hepatitis B and C and CXR. This was according to the referral letter so I just had to follow it even if I got tested for everything last year. I think the medicals would depend on your nationality/where your home country is(assuming that the Immigration would deem it high/low risk country)

Any progress with your 457 visa application/s?

Nurses/doctors always have to do full visa Medicals, regardless of visa. That is why I'm wondering if everything got ticked on the application?

Other applicants may have tests added, but health staff always have the same tests regardless of where they come from.

  7. Hi,

I've just applied for medicals (I dont have a case officer yet), I followed the link on my immi account page to get my referral letter and HAP ID - after doing this it stated on the letter that I only need a basic medical and it did not include the hepatitis tests.

I'm a nurse so thought this would be needed. When I booked the lady at nuffied said they can only book the tests that are indicated on the referral letter so I don't know how I can get it added on.

Does anyone have any advice on this? I don't want to have to go back at a later date and do the blood test as I don't want to delay things!

Any help would be grately appreciated.

    Sam

Sam did you not have to tick somewhere that you would be working in hospitals? I did for both visas and was always asked for hep.

  8. Hi there do you mind me asking how you got your offer of employment and the process that took? I too am a HV in Scotland and moving to Brisbane march 2014 and would REALLY like to have offer of employment but not sure that will happen without them meeting you first? I am so nervous as don't think can get house without job and cant get job without house arghhh and im a single mum which does not help lol any advice much appreciated :-)

Hi I had a letter of offer because I applied for a post with sponsorship before I came over to Oz. Do you have an independent visa? What sort of work are you looking for? If you want to chat/talk pm me. I am employed as the Aussie equivalent of HV in NSW. :)

  9. Hi,

I am new to this site and would like to hear from nurses who have migrated for UK to Oz. Whether it was on a permanent visa or a sponsored visa. I am 45 and have been a qualified community staff nurse for 10 yrs. I am now in my 1st year of health visiting (public health Nurse-Child and family).

Would like to know on current job opportunities please.

i work here as a child and family health nurse. I came on a 457 a year ago and was also promised PR which was granted a few weeks ago. Sponsorship is possible but you might need to go outside the metropolitan areas. I was a HV for 11 years before I came out.

  10. Hi,

My name is Kirsty I qualified as a general nurse in August of this year. My partner, son and I are thinking of doing a reccie over to Aus next October. I am aware that I need at LEAST one years post reg experience to even consider a move to Australia. Since I qualified in August I have been working on a ward in a local nhs trust hospital, it's been dreadful to say the least I work 60 hours a week I rarely see my three year old due to the long working hours and the ward is very short staffed which makes for a difficult and challenging working environment at times, not to mention unsafe. Anyway after 4-5 months of being there and trying to change things ive given up and now been offered a post in a prison as a nurse. My question is will working in a prison rather than a hospital cause me a disadvantage when applying for posts in Australia? There is a lot of talk from people that working in a prison rather than a hospital is a terrible idea and makes me a bad nurse! I completed my supervised practice in a prison and it is still very clinical so unsure why this would be the case? Im thinking of working as a bank nurse in a hospital or nursing home alongside my prison job to keep a foot in but not sure it will be worth it! Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Kirsty xxx

Kirsty you need one year post qualifying experience here because Australian Nurses do a post-graduate year before they are considered to be fully qualified. Any experience is counted, and skills are always deemed transferable.

You may find it challenging here too, but not because of the hours or staffing levels. It's different. Especially if like me you have considerable experience in the UK. Not worse or better, just different.

    Good luck! :)

  11. Hi Gilrean,

Sounds like it all worked out for you, how is ur job? I probably will be looking at child andfamily nurse post also but in Perth.

Loving it here, but Child and Family Health Nursing is more like a staff nurses role in a Health Visiting team than an actual HV.

CFHN do online part-time course with a 2-4 weeks practice placement. Very unlike HV course.

That said I get paid a lot more than I ever did as a Health Visitor and am spending three months covering for the NUM which is interesting too.

Good luck Shelz. I met another HV this year, she is in management permanently, she found the loss of autonomy in CFHN compared to that which HVs have in UK too hard to cope with.

  12. Hi,

I will br declaring a temporary address aka holiday apartment whilst i am there so shouldnt be any issues with that - AHPRA have emailed me the form and also u do not need a job offer to finalise. This advice has come direct from AHPRA so hoping it is correct lol.

Once my registration is finalised i will be completing a modified skills assessment with ANMAC so dont have to complete Ielets either :-)

I found gathering evidence, certificates, statements and getting it all certified to be a massive job,, wouldnt want to be repeating thar again if i could avoid it.

Hi I applied to APHRA Easter 2012 eligible May2012 and arrived Nov 2012. Produced proof of address, passport with visa stamp (I know! But I had one) letter of offer of employment (I had one too) and it took ten working days.

    good luck guys!
