  1. We live out in Aranda and I cycle to work in Deakin which is about a 23k round trip each day. I didn't have the chance to cycle in the UK (moved out here about 2.5 months ago) but love having that chance here. I haven't done a winter yet but am taking the mindset that there's no such thing as being cold, just the wrong clothes! Bike paths are great and I hardly touch a road all the way (I have to cross only one road and that has a pedestrian crossing). I do agree that not having a car could be limiting as there are some great parks, lakes and other outdoorsie things to do around and outside of Canberra which you would miss out on if you didn't have a car. In our opinion those parks and so on are some of the best things about living in Canberra. You could get away with a small weekend run around as if you need to get up to Sydney, the Snowies or the coast there are very good hourly coaches (check out Murrays Coaches ...). All the best
  2. Thanks Mrs Moo, when they come down, we'll be the ones with three little girls helping out with the marshaling! Gareth
  3. Hi, we've just rented a house in Aranda after emigrating from the UK. Our container arrives in Aus later this week and we're told it should take a couple of weeks to clear customs and quarantine! It'll be like Christmas when all our stuff arrives!! So far it all seems great; our house backs onto the bush and the 3 x kids have settled into the primary school well and I've started cycling into work in Deakin (love the cycle paths here...). Also my wife is looking for a running club to join and is going to try out the park run round Ginninderra Lake on Saturday so if anyone knows of a good running club in our area we'd appreciate the feedback. Would be great to meet up with other 'Poms' in Canberra so we'd be grateful if anyone would let us know if there are any socials going on Cheers all Gareth
  4. Hi, we've got a great tent which we want to take down with us when we ship all our stuff next month. Has anyone else shipped a tent and how did it go?? thanks Gareth
  5. Thanks for the information everyone, I've tried both IYM and Letton Percival and so far they do look to be significantly cheaper. Gareth
  6. Hi all We're packing up and moving down to Canberra at he end of July and are currently finalising our shipping arrangements. We've gone with Pickfords and will be having our own container shipped down. Their insurance people have given us 4 additional service suggestions for possible eventualities. Could anyone who's been through the process comment on whether they experienced problems with the following: Mould and mildew which crops up during transport Electrical equipment failiing to work on arrival which doesn't seem to be caused by physical damage during transport (Mechanical and Electrical Derangement) Thanks
