  1. Hi Imogen, We did use Brisbane Bound for 5 weeks in oct/nov 2012 and were pleased that we did, Rob the man behind it turned out to be one of nicest guys you could meet, offering unlimited advice and help should we need any, and the house was perfect. The house we stayed in was a three bed, 2 double rooms and the third had 2 single beds, a small food package was there for when we arrived which contained the basics till we could get to the supermarket, bread, milk, cereal, tea, coffee etc. We stayed in Carina, which was about 1 hr on public transport to the CBD, taking the car to the city costs a small fortune for parking. Carrindale westfield shopping center is only about 10 minutes away by car. The gold coast about 1 hr south and the sushine coast about 1.5 hrs north, so fairly central for everything. Best of luck with your move and hope you love Australia as much as we do.
  2. Hi HeywoodMonkey, just wondering if you received my message, pm not an option, so I sent an email message.
  3. Everyone seems to be escaping Norfolk on this thread, us too in october:em3600: Currently looking at banking ourselves, westpac looking most likely for us.
  4. Hi HeywoodMonkey, I too am a cnc machinist (turner), not arriving down under till mid October though and heading to the Brisbane area. Any chance they would keep the position open till then. I am currently working as team leader to 8 people and have 22 years experience as a manual and cnc turner (Fanuc and Hass) with a bit of milling now and then. Counting down the days till we arrive and panicking about finding work and somewhere to live. Any info on job prospects and estimated salary's would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Mick
  5. We are looking to book short term arrival accommodation and have found Brisbane Bound web site to be the most likely option. Has anyone used this web site to book short term accommodation? If anyone has any views or comments on this site it would be gratefully received. We look forward to hearing your views. Many thanks Mick and Anj
  6. Many thanks to you all for your advice. Our deadline to activate the visa is 10th Jan 2013 so we think we are going to move a little sooner than anticipated
  7. Good to hear community spirit is alive and well in brisbane. Going down a completely different path... We are intending to move late December or very early January, however we have been advised by a relative that has previously lived in Sydney that this is the worst time to move as this is Australia's holiday season and a lot closes down, causing problems with Tax registration, finding employment and securing rentals etc. Does much of brisbane shut down over this period or has this been exaggerated.
  8. Thank you for putting our minds at rest!
  9. Thank you, this is very helpful.
  10. News reports in UK is saying NSW and Southern Queensland have been hit with bad flooding over the last couple of days. We also understand that during the early part of 2011 and 2012 the Brisbane area encountered floods.
  11. Hi, We are looking to move to Narangba, north of Brisbane, but have concerns about the flooding which has appeared on the news recently. Please can any one offer any information as to whether the flooding is very wide spread or localised to specific areas? Is Narangba badly effected as looking at the flood maps, it does not appear to be within a flood plain area. Thank you Mick & Anj
  12. Having been granted our visa, we are intending to move to the Brisbane area late December or very early January however we are having second thoughts because we have been advised by a relative that has previously lived in Sydney that this is the worst time to move as this is Australia's holiday season causing problems with Tax registration, finding employment and securing rentals etc. Has anyone moved during December or January and if so, have you encountered any difficulties? Does Queensland appear to "shut up shop" during this period? Any information would be appreciated as we need to start arranging removals ...... Thank you. Mick and Anj
  13. Hi Jonalanhill, We started our application in 2008, the TRA was approved early 2009 and we only received the Visa Granted notification 3rd Feb 2012. We believe our application took so long due to the global recession and the number of certain visa's being reduced. Be patient and good luck.
  14. Hi all, after 3 years of waiting.... it has finally been granted :-) Skilled (Migrant) (class VE) subclass 175 (Skilled -Independent) After hours of researching we have decided to head towards Brisbane and in particular the Narangba area. We do have a few concerns though and would appreciate any advice or information with regard to employment and the recent flooding (which on reading the news from the UK looks horrific). Starting with job prospects:- Mick - CNC Turner / Precision Engineer Anj - Legal Secretary Can any one offer any info on whether there are any areas near to Narangba with potential employment opportunities to suit our skills? With regard to the flooding over the last couple of years, has Narangba been hit badly / properties suffering major damage (as we are having visions of our furniture being washed away as it is being unloaded from the removal van). :em4600: We are looking to make the leap down under in December (in pursuit for an outdoor life in the sun) and any information would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance. Mick and Anj (and Sam and Jasper - the dogs)
