  1. I'd be checking if there are any work restrictions on the visa. Some partner visa'a have them, some don't. Then when applying for jobs, just say partner visa which gives permanent residency.
  2. Thanks Nik, the he money is coming from the uk, so the account would be set up there by the person sending me the money. i have just posted the topic on their section which I just noticed. Nik, as you would have done if sent via a bank, were you required to fill out forms to notify HMS Tax due to the large amount? cheers
  3. Are you aware of any of the answers in relation to these companies in terms of, or are any any representatives of these companies on here to answer the following questions? Are they speculating with the funds or just buying to order? Are they registered with HM Customs as an overseas money service provider? Do they have audited accounts at Companies House? How many staff do they have and what turnover? (Obviously a medium/large established company is more reliable than two guys in a back room, though it’s no guarantee). Are the funds held separately from the company’s fund. (This way in the event the company goes bust, it’s protected from creditors). Do they have professional indemnity insurance protecting customers from staff fraud, etc? Do they have direct access to SWIFT? i ask these, because the amount in in the region of £100-120,000.
  4. Hi, I may be getting a large lump sum from the UK shortly. In terms of exchange rates etc, do these alter with the method of which the money is transferred? Ie; do I get a better rate for a swift (wire) transaction as opposed to a personal cheque or bankers draft? Also, with a larger amount, can I secure a better rate than standard?
  5. If my dad was on the deeds and he passes it is not made up as part of his estate. It simply transfers to the remaining owners if held jointly. If solely in his name then it would be part of his estate.
  6. Hi My parents are wanting to send me and my wife a sizable lump sum for house deposit. For arguments sake, £100k. my dad in the uk was advised by his accountant to come on the property with us so if he was to pass away in the next 7 years, we would not be hit for a large inheritance tax bill and the property would just pass to us. This also safeguards my dad's money and me, should anything happen between me and my wife, god forbid. although the Foreign Investment Review Board will allow this, but lenders won't seem to give me and my wife a mortgage with my dad on it too, even though on our own we can get a decent mortgage. does anyone know how to do this or alternatively, if the money was gifted or loaned to me in Aus from the Uk, would we have to still pay inheritance tax should anything happen to him in next 7 years. thanks
  7. Hi mate, I am having the same issues. I fell lucky landing a casual role with nsw health which is. Government job, but there are no permanent positions as of yet for me to apply for so applied for other jobs and struggling to even get replies without residency. Hoping to join NSW Police after I get my residency which should be in Jan 2013. Or I'm considering part time study to become a solicitor. Not sure yet, either way it's a hard slog to get there. All we need is the chance, and I'm sure it's the same for you. I'm based on the central coast jus an hour north of Sydney and hour south of Newcastle and can't find decent work at either. Good luck though. I hope you get something soon.
  8. What law degree did you do, if you don't mind me asking. I was thinking bachelor of laws with the diploma of legal practice. Just unsure how hard I'd find them. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed!!!
  9. I'm not an Ozzie yet. I should get my permanent residency soon though. Have you done any law degrees yourself?
  10. Hi everyone. Due to a recent injury, I've been told I may not pass a medical for NSW Police so looking at other career paths. I am debating if to apply to enter education and train up to be a solicitor. does anyone on here know the best ways to go about this in Oz? I am 32 now so wondering if I am too old to start? Any help whatsoever would be really appreciated. Cheers Thom
  11. Hi Everyone. I'm desperate for a new 2nd hand car as mine has finally died, but severly lack any cash to get one. Does anyone know if i can claim some of my super back? I've seen and heard mixed reports. I know if i was to come back to the UK i could. I don't want all of it, just some for a small run about. Cheers
  12. Hi Alex, As far as i know (but i may be wrong), to gain PR after being in the country for so long on a 457, the skill under which you are applying has to be still on the demand list when you apply, not just when you enter the country for that skill. A friend of mine came over from the UK to complete a hairdressing course (student visa) and aimed to get a 457 and PR once qualified as it was on the skills list. After she completed her training which was only 12 months, hairdressing was taken off the skills list and she was no longer able to apply under this skill, and had to go back home, hence no guarentee of PR. Thom
  13. Hi guys, After my residency i want to apply for the police - i know if applying for federal police i need to be a citizen first. I'd like to gain some info and ask some questions if possible and Charles Sturt uni aren't very helpful. Feel free to private message me if you are willing to help. Thanks everyone. Thom
  14. Thanks George. My parents will be staying in the UK, not to say they won't come over for extended hols here and there when we get our house, but it's purely them helping me out.
  15. Just saw the moneycorp thing, so going to give it a whirl! Cheers
  16. Well, the bank of mum and dad were struggling quite bad, but they managed to sell one of the properties from before they lived together so, it gave them a bit of a cushion to fall back on. Been bad times up till then...
  17. Hi everyone, My parents have offered to give me the cash for a house deposit (between $45-55k) so i can buy now rather than keep renting for the next few years. Has anyone got any ideas how much they can send me in terms of limits and taxes etc and what any implications may be. I'd be paying them back, it's just more of an instant lump sum for me to help me out. Cheers Thom
  18. Hi Everyone, One of my mates back in the UK is thinking of coming over to Oz (Sydney, NSW) to see if he can train up to become a Doctor/Surgeon - His mum is from Australia so he can come but he's lived in England all his life pretty much. Personally, i think he's been watching too much Grey's Anatomy or ER and i can't figure out why he's not already here in Australia when he has an Oz passport!!!! He asked me to get some info for him, ie; what is involved etc but not sure where to look, so hoping we have some doctors on here to advise. He's worked in a bank as a cashier for the last 10 years and only has English education to year 12 - albeit quite some years ago now! His main worry is his age and lack of education - completed year 12, then into work... Questions he's asked me to ask for him - At 35 years old, is he to old to consider a career change to a profession such as this? Long training etc. - What are the routes to qualification? - Medicine is obviously an in depth and a hard degree to complete, but just how hard is it actually. Ie: Can an average person complete the course or do you have to be extremely intelligent? - If underqualified to complete the undergraduate medicine degree, what other options are available to gain eligibility. Cheers. Thom
  19. Hi Everyone, Me and the Mrs are off to Los Angeles for our anniversary in October and will be there for halloween too. Apparently it's got some pretty good parties there for it. Can anyone recommend any halloween events in LA for us? Cheers Thom
  20. We don't have kids yet. I've said i want to own a house before i consider buying, although she does want them now, but we're just trying to be realistic.
  21. I've tried the "it'll be my job" line. Didn't get anywhere! Tried telling her that it'll be a lot better to get people round and have a BBQ / pool party than going to the pub. She know's what i'm like in the heat, but at the moment we live literally across the road from the beach, but when we buy, we won't have that luxury, hence why i NEED the pool! WOMEN!!!! (No offence!)
  22. Cheers everyone! Some very mixed opinions here! The mrs wants a big garden for the dogs and kids, which i want, but i want the pool too. Guess i'll have to try talk her round! With her being Aussie, i'd of thought it was a given she'd want one!
  23. Hi guys, I'm in the middle of arguing with the mrs about weather or not we buy a house with a swimming pool or not. I want one, she doesn't. She thinks it will be far too much upkeep and cost too much to maintain. Can anyone shed some light on the costs and maintainence. My theory is when not in use in the winter, no worries, just rake anything out of it, better yet use a cover. Come time for summer, do 1-2 chlorine dumps to clean it out chemically before use. Although that may not work! Cheers all. Thom
