Hi Ironchef
I was recommended your page by the moderator so Im here to ask a couple of questions, if u can help and just basically pick your brains. I emigrate to Melbourne on the 16th April and want to send my car over in the next couple of weeks really
Not as much asking if its worth bringin my car out or not because as its definitely coming My enquiry is more on the lines of if you had any ideas on agents clearing it at Melbourne if I sent it RoRo from Newcastle or Southampton. Or you knew of good and/or bad agents to send it across with?
Its a BMW M5 2005 (but 2006 spec), 58000 miles, FULL leather interior; inc dash and FULL doors, heated and aircooled seats and many other options (18k worth of options when purchased). Value in the UK now will be around 19k and the redbook value gives between 65-73 AUD. The car is mint... with a couple of stone chips on the roof above the windscreen.. thats it!
Thanks for your help
Antony
Can't help on RORO and agents but I brought my M5 in via shipping agent in a container. Have a look at my post which details my costs to Sydney:
-
In my case, I'm glad they didn't jump start it as the battery is in the boot and there is a specific process for jump starting using a hidden positive terminal in the engine bay.
-
Great list, thanks for that! For everyone else reading, just remember pwkl paid a fair bit in tax, so that bumped the price a fair bit. Did you send it in a container or on RORO?
A container but not individual. I had a flat battery and the operators would not jump start it themselves so they pushed it around the port and depot on a rolling thingymejig. What happens on RORO in that situation?
-
I think its worth importing.. also how do i get the customs value ?
Thanks!
You can't accurately as it depends on the person making the valuation but in Chef's disclaimers he is estimating 75% of market value.

[i laughed at zircon
If that's all their worth in the UK, I'm packing my bags. Happy to pay you GBP29K myself to take it off your hands if you do the paperwork to get it over haha
$110K is around the right Aussie value, so yes you will have some LCT, but even allowing for that you'll be MILES in front.]
ok. So my hubby has done the maths and does not agree. If you can convince him, then we might use your services and take the M5.
How do we get in touch with you to coninue discussions....
Travelinsal
Have a look at my post:
I brought in my M5 which was a slightly older model so the value fell under the luxury car tax (the independent valuation, not the redbook market value). The LCT of 33% is only applied to the amount above the threshold (threshold is ~$57k) so even with that on top, it should still be worthwhile.

As promised, this is what happened for me so I hope it will give a good indication to people thinking about importing their car. This is for shipping from UK to Sydney, NSW via Anglo Pacific -> OSS worldwide, so there will be some variances:
31 Oct 2011 - car picked up for shippers
8 Nov 2011 - on the boat and on its way
25 Dec 2011 - landed in Sydney apparently
12 Jan 2012 - customs invoice arrives
27th Jan 2012 - cleared quarantine - no extra costs or steam cleaning requirements
3rd Feb 2012 - get car towed to local inspection garage
22nd Feb 2012 - compliance plate attached to car, greenslip purchased
25th Feb 2012 - car registered, number plates attached, woo hoo!
You could easily save 3/4 weeks as I had to fit around my work and mainly had to do stuff at weekends, the inspection/registration is very quick once you have the paperwork so make sure you get all 4 import approval certificates when you arrive in Aus.
Now here's probably the most requested info, the cost of it all. My car was valued around £21000 before it left. AU$ for all figures based upon exchange rate of ~1.5 where I paid in £ as that's what it was at the start.
$50 - import application
$2360 - shipping cost (door to Sydney depot)
$900 - marine insurance to cover the destination market value
$250 - quarantine inspection
$320 - independent vehicle valuation
$6675 - customs duty and GST (based on valuation of $40500)
$850 - customs clearance and handout
$160 - towing from depot to local garage
$86 - compliance plate
$220 - 3x child restraints anchors
$205 - safety and roadworthy inspection (blue slip)
$52 - registration fee
$402 - NSW vehicle tax (based on car weight)
$1215 - NSW stamp duty (based on valuation of $40500)
£400 - euro style number plates (cheaper options available)
A grand total of $13345 or ~£8900 or ~42% of the UK value. Looking at this, I would say you can cut around 5% by choosing cheaper shipping options but also note some items are fixed amounts and do not depend on the value of car.
And before you put the wallet away, there's greenslip & comp insurance on top which is vehicle/individual specific.

Hi
Have downloaded the form for importing a car probably later this year/early next and I am a bit confused.
People say you need to give an Oz address but where? It just says "your address" so could I put my UK address here so I will get the approval sent to me. If it physically needs to be in Oz when the car is being transported then surely I can post it or scan and e-mail it there later.
Just seems silly having the approval sent to a mate in Oz when I will probably need the documentation to get it shipped from UK
You use your UK address first, if you are still in UK. They will then send you a copy of the certificate that you'll need for customs and you give this to the shipping company. Once you get to Aus, you contact them again and provide your Aus address, and they will send you the original set of certificates (there are four).
I would apply around 2 months before you plan to ship the car, you should know by then who you'll be using as your shipping agent.

My EVO is not an import! It is a UK car It was one of the first to come to the UK. It was owned by Mitiubishi. Ralliart Evos are also UK cars. There are some imported evos out there. You are right it does cost alot to keep on the road!
I meant not officially imported into Australia.
-
We have an EVO 6 1999,air con and sunroof ( not many made like that ) Its a UK car 82,000 on clock, Market Vaule in UK £7000. OH wants to sell it I want to take it.
The Evo 6 was not officially imported into the country (something to consider) but only a limited number of Tommi Makkinen Editions. On another forum I visit, some guy was selling his imported Evo 6 for around $16k. If its not about the money, bring it as it's quite a rare car (not many of the Evo models made it here), just bear in mind issues with rare cars eg. parts, servicing, insurance etc.

Hello Iron Chef, my I refer to you as the wise one!! Great thread, very informative and it certainly answered a lot of my initial queries. However, I could not find the answer to all of my queries so I hope you dont mind me asking your opinion relevant to my situation.
I am currently living in Sydney on the 457 long stay business visa having arrived from Ireland in November. It is my intention to apply for permanent residency in due course, 2/3 years time. I am considering buying a car in the UK for around 20K sterling in December '12 when I return home.( Audi RS4/S5, BMW M5 or Cayenne ) I am prepared to register, tax and insure the car for 12months and park it up until such time as I return again in Dec/Jan 2013. I would then ship the car to Sydney from the Uk.
I will have used the car on two occasions during the qualifying period, ( dec-jan 2012 and dec-jan 2013 ) However I will be living in Sydney in between these dates, albeit on a temp long stay business visa. My argument is that I did use the car and it was available to me for use during the 12 months, despite the fact I was Sydney. At the time of purchase it might have been my intention to purchase the car for use at home in Ireland/UK, however my circumstances have changed and Australia will now be my new home as I plan to apply for perm resident. Hence the reason for importing my personal vehicle !!
The question I have is - since I am on a temp visa, will the 12 months ownership of the car be recognised even though I will have been in Sydney for the majority of the 12 months ownership/qualifying period?
I think I read somewhere that since I am on a temp visa, I do not have to adhear to the qualifying period - is this correct?
My situation is complicated because of the fact that I will have been living in Sydney for 12 months on the temp visa before buying the car. I will still be on my temp visa when the car is imported circa april 2014 but I will be going for my perm residency around that time. Buying the car in the UK and parking it up in Ireland only complicates matters but I can look after that side of things myself.
What I dont want to happen is for me to spend 20k Stg on a car and not be allowed import it because I wasnt resident in that country during the 12months ownership/qualifying period.
Sorry if my summary is a bit all over the place, u can see why I was getting confused!
Any advise/direction/clarification would be much appreciated wise one!!
Part of the application for import approval is to declare all trips outside of your home country as it will count against you having owned it for 12 months. You also need to prove you've used your car during those 12 months ie. service work, invoices etc. I don't know if the rules are different for temp visas holders though.

Iron Chef
send you a email for costs etc, i have attached a couple of photo's, one is for the child anchour points and the second is about the dial / digital Km/ph? I hope this explains, don't need the agrivation of tring to get a new speed dash.
Hmmmm, to me those look like luggage/baggage hooks. I've got some of those in my car boot, they pivot up right?

Hi,
2007 Landrover Freelander 2 GS Diesel with ac and 70,000 miles
Uk price 13,000
Oz price 50,000
Much appreciated mate Iron chef!
Not wanting to contradict IC on this but I have an interest in these as originally I was thinking of shipping my 2008 FL2 HSE. In Oz, they do not sell any lower spec models, only SE & HSE. Going off Redbook, a 2007 SE diesel has a book price average $26,500. A GS is two specs lower than the SE and with above average miles, I wouldn't value it at $50k but closer to $20k. Thought it was best to point this out now rather than you ship it over and find out later.

There's no issue with having isofix fittments on the car but you need to get child restraint anchors fitted as compulsory. Isofix on their own is not sufficient to pass the safety requirements for vehicles. There's a whole argument about which is safer but currently that's the way it is.
-
I can tell you, it won't be the value if you plain converted £10k to $, and it won't be the market value in Aus of $47k, it will be somewhere in between, my guess would be $22k.
-
If the clocks, speedo etc don't show both km and miles, then I believe you need to make some changes. Best to source parts over in UK in readiness. As a rough estimate, expect to pay something like 35-40% of the value of your vehicle in costs to get it over here. The GST (10%) and duty (5%) are based on the 'landed' value customs have decided which is usually less than the market value of the car in Aus but more than a straight £ -> $ conversion. Fees to get through customs and quarantine can total over $1000. My advice since you are looking to buy, is get the newest, prestigious model you can afford, as then it would make it financially more viable, unless you're making a heart decision. An Audi RS6/R8 would be brilliant but a Porsche 911 would be the better bet for 2 years down the line. Once I finally get my car on the road, I'm going to provide a breakdown of costs that applied for me.

A month on the wharf?! Wowsers...have there been any complications?
Not that I know of, probably didn't help being over the xmas holidays but I'm not sure if it really landed on 25th anyway. I never confirmed that date, I was just happy it's in the country at least. I'll probably chase again next week.

In case people are wondering on timelines, this is me so far:
31 Oct 2011 - car picked up for shippers
8 Nov 2011 - on the boat and on its way
25 Dec 2011 - landed in Sydney apparently
12 Jan 2012 - customs invoice arrives
25th Jan 2012 - still waiting for quarantine clearance
I'll provide updates as and when

Got my customs invoice through now. Is quarantine a separate process as I thought customs/quarantine were bunched together. There's only Duty, GST, Entry charge, Entry & Query memo, Air-con Release Memo on the invoice.

This is a great thread! Thanks Iron Chef!
I have a friend who has PR and is planning move out later in the year. They bought a car from a family member just at the end of last year. Does that mean that they would have to wait 12 months before shipping it?
Thanks
Emma
In a word, Yes

I thought on the bmw, there's a brake pad wear indicator and the computer tells you when its due. What was wrong with the windscreen?
-
Only you can decide if it's worth shipping, check out some local values for your car (redbook) then guestimate about spending 30-35% of your £11k worth to get it shipped & through customs (not including insurance, registration)

Hi all, I've been looking for information and stumbled here so I hope I can get some answers. Apologies if they been answered but I did search and couldn't find an answer.
Basically, I got import approval and the car is currently in a container on its way over, another month or so. Port will be Sydney, and it'll be for NSW.
What I don't actually know and finding it difficult to get info on, is once it lands and I've paid the customs, duty, cleaning costs etc what happens next? Assuming I have insurance, I need registering/registration plates, where do I get them? Can I still drive my car from the port to get them? What's the inspection thing mentioned somewhere on this thread? Am I allowed to drive the car to inspection or are they mobile?
Thanks and I'm sure there may be other questions.
Phil

I'd say it was the other way round. Inspections & registration was very simple as long as you have the paperwork to hand. The garage that does the inspection will know exactly what to do so nothing to worry about and will advise you and keep you in the loop. Customs processing is all waiting and wondering, no control at all.
