I used An Post to send down emergency stuff while waiting for our shipping - box was sitting in my friends house waiting for us as we arrived. Brilliant! What the guy in the post office told me was make sure the girth of the box (waist?) was no bigger than 3m! Just make sure that it is under 20kgs too, as it can be turned back if it is heavier.
For anyone wanting trials and tribulations of shipping company pm me......

Hi bigbadcon,
We ended up going with Nat Ross, they did bring down the price a bit, but ours is high because we are going to Newcastle. But they were the cheapest. Apparently the further away from the main centre (Sydney) the higher the price. So far so good, they'll be arriving next week to pack us up. I'll keep you posted as to how we get on.
-
Yup, both Careline and Nat Ross both came in around 5600 - could be that we're in Waterford! I'm waiting on a quote from Crown in the next couple of days then I'm going to start some hard bargaining, it's great to get the heads up from this forum - it will give us a leg to stand on. Now if we could just manage to sell the car!
-
One was Nat Ross and we're heading to Newcastle in NSW from Waterford. I've had a few others over 6000. Sounds like I need to do some serious re-negotiation with a couple of these.

We had visits from AMC and Nat Ross.
Both quotes were around 4000 for a 20ft with AMC being slightly cheaper. AMC quoted 6000 for a 40ft container which was to include our car but we are still undecided about whether to bring it or not. Putting the car in the container is the easy bit ,its all the paper work and fees on the other side is whats difficult..
So far AMC are in the lead as we were very impressed with the Sales Director who came out whose name was Aubrey McCarthy (A M C ??)
Careline said it was too early to give us a correct quote as we arent going until Feb/March 2013 and with the price of fuel etc they price they give could be completely different early next year...
Both sound a lot better than the €5,600 I've been quoted - are you going to Perth?

I've been looking at quotes for insurance through independent companies as in - not with the removalist companies..... here's one from
http://www.lettonpercival.co.uk/
I've emailed and asked if they cover Ireland to Australia.....
'The rate from Ireland to NSW, Australia is 1.40% plus 6% IPT. Therefore, on a sum insured of £10,000, for example, the premium would calculate to £140 plus £8.40 IPT = £248.40'
Anybody else used independent insurers? I checked with all the removalists I've had to quote and they all say it's okay not to go with them. Seems to bring the costs down a bit.

Hey Corkonian, same here - 1.4L Golf is not worth bringing over, but she's a great car and won't sell for peanuts here. I'm going to check with a mate who he used to ship his car and I'll keep you posted - there's a lot of regulations - you need to own the car for 12 months and you have to apply for an import permit which takes time - you would probably be best to go with someone who will do the whole lot for you. As soon as I know more I'll let you know.
Thanks Mataba - I've checked the website, but not many 1.4L cars on the road there - Aussies like 1.8L at least. But I spoke to my Aussie friend over the weekend and she's still driving her old Toyota with 200,000k on the clock. If it's a good car they will hold onto it forever! Hope all going well for you over there.

Hi Corkonian - we're in the same boat (sorry, bad pun) trying to sell the car here but no luck and wondering whether to bring it to Oz - from what I've been told it's quite cheap to ship, but the import duties are very expensive in Oz. You could follow this thread, there's lots of info on it.
Let me know how you go, we might have to ship too!

Ha! Just got a quote from Pickfords - had been speaking to a Dublin office - quote in £'s for 5,026 - when I queried the '£'s' I was told it was because they were quoting from Belfast! In Euro's that's over €6,200! Pickfords are out!
-
Ha ha Mataba, had to laugh at you on the blow up bed - hopefully all your stuff arrives soon and in one piece. I've lost too much stuff moving before to loose more moving this time so might just have to stump up the money - agree with you on the costs once you arrive - bonds and rental advances seem huge. Hope the move is going well for you and it warms up soon.
-
Wow, these quotes are working out a lot more expensive than I thought. Might have to re-evaluate how much we bring. Unfortunately there is a lot of fragile stuff so needs expert packing. Waiting on Pickfords and Crown for next quotes - both NatRoss and Careline were €5600, all for 20' container. Will keep you posted!
-
Wow, we just got quoted €5,600 for a 20' container - Waterford to Newcastle! Mataba - did you beat them down? Do I need to start hard negotiating with them?

Hi Craig, thanks for letting me know, advice much appreciated.
[/b][/b][/b][/b][/b]Being a smaller engine than what was available in Australia will lower the value and make this car harder to eventually sell. Based on the likely market value here for your car I would suggest selling it before you leave as it will likely end of owing you around $5,000 more than it would be worth, so you would be better off selling if you can get close to the €6,500 estimated current value.
Regards,
Craig.

Well done Braidwood! I wish we were going to the central coast but instead he got a job in canberra so we are off there.
Thanks Bazinga, not much work on the Central Coast though. Canberra is under-rated - and great to have a job to go down to. Serious job hunting starts from now! Enjoy Canberra.

Brilliant news!!! All the best, when r u aiming to leave? Where r u heading to?
Probably not till July / August - and we're looking at Tasmania at the moment, we've also got contacts in Adelaide, but all my mates are in Sydney / Central Coast - the options are broad at the moment. Stepson won't be home for a couple of hours yet so we've got some Fosters and a couple of stubbie holders.... can't wait to tell him! Good news all round this week wasn't it?

At 10.40 this morning we went out on a limb and decided to ring LG, just to see if she could give us any idea about our approval.....
she said 'I thought that name was familiar.... I've just sent your approval via email only two minutes ago!' A 100 visa for husband and his son, who's 19 and a dependent...............
Yahooooooo! for us and best of luck to everyone else... the wait is really really worth it - ecstatic!
-
Congrats laroo76- what a weekend for you! happy birthday and glad you're walking on air!
-
Congratulations lusso! Well done on the visa - hope the excitement wasn't too much in Tescos - and congrats to on the baby.....

hehehe - yeah I know, our CO told us that our visa would be ready to process by April - which I think is the 'official speak' and I keep hoping that it's just going to pop up any minute NOW!

It's too late for today laroo76! Thing to do is not to stress for the weekend and start all over again on Monday.:arghh:
-
Congrats loz from oz - good to see the November ones coming through. Hopefully a few more early Novembers - including ours - will start happening!

Hey Courty7105 and Nimhug - I used Cork for medicals and they were excellent - looks like there's a few from Ireland heading downunder. Good luck with your applications!
-
Hi Waffquinze
We posted ours from Ireland by registered post on 1/11/11 - auspicious date! and got an email on 8/11/11 assigning a CO and requesting meds and police checks. You should have something in the next few days. Good luck with your application!

We used NR and had a terrible time. We paid for sole use of a 20ft but on moving day they turned up with a truck. Said that due to a shortage of 20ft containers that our stuff would be repacked in the depot. We had long delays, well outside the timeframe quoted. After a lot of investigation the shipping agent in Sydney told us that the consignment was in a shared 40ft container. Looks like the delay was our stuff sitting in a 40ft in Cork, waiting on another consignment to full the rest of the container... even though we had paid for a sole use! Lots of phone calls, lots of arguements and no satisfaction. Nasty experience.
