  1. Oh God they are still a complete head wreck then! At least when we applied it was only a $300 or something it's gone a lot since hasn't it? It's a hard slog but it's the worst part of the process and once you're through it the rest will be a doddle!

  2. Hi Susan

My Husband failed and we appealed we just gave them the extra things they were looking for and got successful the 2nd time. It's a couple of years ago now so I can't remember how long it took, a few months but it seemed like years!!

    Good luck!

    Caz

  3. He's doing ok but it's really all about getting contacts, meeting people getting experience in oz he's finding it frustrating cause he's got 17 years experience and he's on his own till Christmas! But there's definitely work out there!

  4. You need your trade papers is there any way you can get them reissued? If not you'll have to try and get them through recognition of prior learning (that's what my husband did tiler also) we used Australian skills assessment I think was their name they were very good. For that you need to prove 4 years work grand if you have an employer but if self employed like my dh a nightmare writing down individual jobs for 4 years! We sent pictures and video of my dh working too. Then you do an interview via Skype and that's it it costs a fair bit though think ours was about €1500 I think I did this bit through a migration agent might be worth giving one a call you can usually get a good bit of info from them in the 1st call before they start charging you.

Then you have to deal with TRA that's a whole different nightmare!

  5. When we get to Oz I'm going to have to work, but without childcare rebate not sure if I can afgord to!

I was wondering are there any other wives/husbands in this situation? I was thinking there must be and wondering if anyone would be interested in me minding their kids in my own home at a lower rate than the creches charge? I am officially a special needs assistant and have childcare qualifications and would get working with children check for both me and my dh as he'll be about the house too at times.

Anyway just wondering if it's something people would be interested in.

  6. The 187 you are tied to working at the one specified work place for two years. You can't move around.

Unless it's a pretty big company then a tiling company may struggle to fit the sponsorship criteria. I'd be getting a migration agent to have a look over your case if they haven't sponsored before.

Ah right! So they're prob gonna offer 186 if anything at all thanks blossom

  7. No not just that if there aren't the same restrictions on locations to live and work it obviously means that himself has more places that he can work - he's a tiler so obviously an advantage to have more scope for places to work! I know it's expensive but we got our 489 in before the massive price rise so at least we wouldn't have paid it twice! And is it worth it for PR? I won't know anything definite until DH meets them tomorrow just wanted to get a better idea in my head about it if they do offer it to him.

  8. So you are asking for comments but apparently you already have the answers ...

But the 187 is definitely a regional visa. Hint: there is a clue in the name.

I'm aware that it's a regional visa but the 489 family sponsored is also regional but allows work throughout any part of regional Australia unlike the state sponsored which has restricted postcodes in WA but they're both regional! I was wondering if it has restricted postcodes as I can't find them mentioned on skillselect.

I don't know all the answers that's why I'm looking for peoples opinion on the 489 vs the 186/187 (if it becomes a possibility)

Basically is PR always better than Provisional? Is the biggest draw back being dependent on your employer fulfilling their end of the 2 year commitment? Any pitfalls or advantages, just information like I said in my origional post!

  9. It says on skillselect that all of WA is regional I thought it didn't have the same restrictions of postcodes like our 489 they're not mentioned at all in the info for the 187? That's what I meant by restrictions the areas to live and work.

He should be fine working for the same person for 2 years as long as they're professional and run things properly he'll be happy enough to just get on with his job! He wouldn't take the sponsorship if he thought they were dodgy in any way at all or if he thought he couldn't get along with them.

I'm not sure which they're offering he's meeting them tomorrow. My thinking was that the PR would be a better option to what we have now, at least I'd be able to work as well on PR with the 489 We wouldn't be able to afford childcare without the rebate!

  10. Hi

We have a state sponsored 489 but there is a possibility that my DH could get sponsored which while very dependent on the employer must be a better option as it's PR and he has no restrictions on where he works?

So any facts or info on the subject would be greatly appreciated!!

  11. When I did ours last year colour copies were fine just certified black and white, I scanned everything I had for DH employment (main applicant) it was a lot had to do 2 lots I think, don't know if you need that much though, and didn't put in anything for my work.

No idea if things have changed it was about this time last year when we did ours good luck with it!

  12. Ok I've been having a tinker with this for a little while and think I've got it pretty close. I've developed an Excel spreadsheet that provides an estimate of whether or not your car is

Category A: definitely worth bringing, you'll do nicely out of it when the time comes to sell

Category B: only worth bringing if you love the car and/or plan to keep it for a while

Category C: not worth the aggro, you're better off selling it in the UK

*Disclaimers* - the estimates are based on the following:

    1) using my services at AUD990 (it's set up for my customers, obviously!)

    2) using RORO shipping from Southampton (does not include transport to get your car to the port)

    3) the current GBP/AUD exchange rate

    4) a customs value at 75% of the normal market value

    5) includes customs duty and GST

    5) a set figure for dock charges (which I've deliberately set higher than what they normally come in at)

    6) includes the cost of a valuation and transport to the workshop once cleared

    7) includes $1000 for minor modifications needed for registration

    8) does NOT include registration costs (because you pay that on all cars, whether they're imported or bought here in Australia)

As you can see, I've tried to be as upfront about the costs of getting the vehicle to Australia, and I have actually over-allowed on what many bills come in at. There are a heap of variables in here and each car is different, so don't be disheartened if you get a category C - the calculator isn't meant to be the ultimate authority, but it will give you a fair guide.

    What I need from you:

    1) Year/make/model/mileage/aircon or no aircon

    2) Market value in the UK (be realistic!)

    3) Market value in Australia (search via www.redbook.com.au and make sure you click right through to the description to get the correct price ranges - if you don't chances are you're looking at the price it was sold at when it was new)

    Let's test it out

Sorry another euro 1 for ya!

    1. 2001 vauxhall zafira, 1.8l, 96k miles aircon

    2. market value Ireland bout 2k but just bought it for €1350

    3. value Au $5400 - $7200
