  1. To cut a long story short, in OZ on 175 visa, had a baby that is going to have a severe disability.

Baby is an Australian citizen due to our permanent resident status.

As we are new in OZ we are unsure what support both educational and financial is like here.

Does anyone have any experience what country provides better support to parents of a disabled child?

  2. What did you do?

Self pack or pack and pick from the shipping company.

Trying to work out which is better.

Self pack: More time to pack, meaning less stress. Having to be organised and the difficulty in obtaining insurance

Pack and Pick: Stressful in that everything gets boxed in a couple of hours, chance of missing something. Better insurance cover from shipping company.

    Also costs differ as well.

  3. I agree with Snifter.

Why not call Malaysian Airlines and ask them? I doubt they would allow you to fly at 32 weeks pregnant if they thought you would be denied entry to Malaysia when you arrived - I'm pretty sure they get fined for that sort of thing. Or even better, call the Malaysian embassy.

I travelled through Thailand when I was 6 months pregnant, via Jordan, and I had no problems, if that helps.

We did call Malaysia airline and their English was extremely poor. I have also emailed them twice and they only state the following:

'For your information, expecting mother may be accepted for travel on MAS services up to :

    * 35th week into pregnancy (international flight) and

    * 36th week into pregnancy (domestic flight)

provided the passenger need to produce a medical certificate signed by your doctor stating

    * the expected date of confinement (EDC)

    * normal pregnancy

    * passenger is in good health to travel

Kindly be advised that expecting mothers beyond those stages will NOT be accepted for travel.

For international travel, acceptance of travel must also take into account immigration requirements.

Some countries may refuse admission to foreign national in advanced stage of pregnancy.

Malaysia Airlines also refuses admission for foreign ladies with 6 month or more into pregnancy.

Should you require any further assistance or information, kindly contact us at 1-300-88-3000 toll-free number within Malaysia or +603 7843 3000 outside Malaysia.

We will be glad to assists and serve you better.

Thank you for choosing Malaysia Airlines and we look forward to hear from you again.'

Which is very vague and also states different terms of pregnancy.

  4. Some countries place limitations on the entry of non-national pregnant women. It is advisable to check with the local consulate to confirm the country specific requirements.

Yes but I cannot find conformation whether this means entry to an airport for transit purposes or only through immigration.

  5. Can anyone confirm what countries will allow you to enter in transit whilst flying at 32 weeks pregnant?

I know most airlines will allow up to 28 weeks and 35 if you have a doctors letter. However immigration in stopover countries differ.

For example Malaysia does not allow anyone in after the 6 month period.

Trying to find a transit stopover.

  6. Is it worth shipping an 8 year old dog?

Doubting whether the added stress as the dog will have to live with family for 2 months prior to departure from UK, then spend 30 days in quarantine. Meaning a total of 3 months from us.

Thinking if it is worth dragging our little one through all that and if he will be traumatised / experience attachment issues in future.

  7. I worked for one of the best know international companies and they definately did not make you pay it back - depends on the company I suppose.

And before some know it all comes on and says you cant do this I should have said I still had my house etc in the UK and was still registered for tax etc so nothing was different except I was on an extended "holiday" till I resigned, gave me the option of returning if I didnt like it here. So this may not be possible for everyone to do.

Glad someone else can confirm that you can do this as we were unsure about using this tactic.

Think we are in the same boat as you where in. We still have our house in the UK, no time to sell and wouldn't want to due to three things - poor exchange rate, houses not selling and low valuations in current climate. So we would lose on three fronts and not a single gain.

Luckily we can afford to keep it even without renting it out. Only drawback is that it lies empty which is not ideal, however we have some family close by and they can keep an eye on it.

My wife has worked in the same place for 20 years, so she is fortunate that she can try OZ before you buy I suppose.

Ultimately I suppose she can either pay back if we stay in Oz, move back for a year and fulfil her obligation if she doesn't want to pay the money back or move back to the UK full time if it doesn't work out and still have her job.

  8. Tell her not to resign from her job yet - this is what I did

I went off on maternity leave for a year, the earliest that I could, around 11 weeks before I think. I moved over here then, never said it was permanent (just like being on holiday, work cant tell you where to live while you are off on maternity leave) I got 18 weeks full pay then onto stat maternity pay for 26 weeks then nothing for 13 weeks, then a month before I was due to return I resigned then. I was lucky that the company I worked for didnt make you pay anything back if you didnt return though. Check out her employers maternity policy.

Can you tell me how long ago this was?

Thanks for that AJ. This is the best option by far. She does have a clause that she has to work after the year is up, think she get 26 weeks full pay and 26 week statutory. So it is a lot of money to give up and like you say I don't think they can tell her she needs to stay in the UK.

I do have a friend who went back to her home town in Italy when off on maternity. Only difference is that its in the EU.

  9. Moving over shortly, wife will follow in a couple of weeks after tying things up in the UK. Wife was due to go off on Maternity at the end of July and stay off for the whole year (some employer payments then onto stat maternity pay). However with us moving over and the baby due when she arrives on OZ, we are unsure what rights to maternity she has now either in UK or in OZ.

    So,

Could anyone confirm whether you can still claim maternity pay from the UK if you relocate over to OZ for your maternity period.

Or if you can claim maternity equivalent in Australia.

    Talk about stress......:arghh:

  10. Just wondering what the fastest has been from someone getting a job offer from the UK and jumping on a plane to OZ?

And would also appreciate any advice on the move if it was fast and if you can think back to what you would have done differently.

  11. I know that technically there are no repercussions. I was just wondering what other people would do?

TBH I haven't totally decided yet, as I generally have high principles, but it's not that often that you face a scenario like this.

  12. Well on the plus side - firstly there is no legal obligation and secondly I am sure that the amount of taxes I will be paying into the Aussie economy more than makes up for a change like this.

At the end of the day, a skilled visa is open for 5 years if validated. It is impossible to tell what circumstances we will find ourselves in over this time period. And if you can them please tell me what next weeks lottery numbers will be.
